Searching the workbench gave me this instead of a combat, after the bit about screwdrivers and chisels:
One of the bandits is in the process of building a little wooden birdhouse. It's pretty nice, and has a sort of Art Deco style to it.
You search the bench and rack of tools carefully, but don't find a key. You take a monkey wrench instead -- maybe you can throw it into Lopez's plans. Ha ha, see what I did there?
