Talk:Sunken chest

From A KoL Wiki

Jick has now said, on the radio, that the chest can be opened. You need the crowbarrr and it was the longest unsolved puzzle in the game. He said it in a serious voice, not the sarcastic voice he uses when goading newbies about "killign teh hermit". So we ened some spades, and fast. gv--Scorpios 03:57, 7 April 2006 (CDT)

P-haps it's justme, but I think that we ate thinking in the wrong lines. The line "there is no locking mechanism that you can see" ssuggests that someone else can. Some pirate? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Lisalo (talkcontribs) on 16:10, 23 July 2009

  • He seemed pretty sarcastic to me. But whatever... --Ricket 04:28, 7 April 2006 (CDT)
  • Riff said the same thing about a week before hand on the forums. It didn't look like he was joking. -Carados 23:49, 8 April 2006 (CDT)
  • Perhaps I was thrown off by Riff's laughing, as Jick answered the question. Seriously though, oldest unsolved puzzle in the game? Not a chance. --Ricket 04:02, 9 April 2006 (CDT)
  • When was the chest rolled out? My thoughts was that it could be something from a Pirate-movie, say Pirates of the Caribbean. It can only be opened in full moon och New Moon or something.. Any thoughts?--Ferdawoon 15:06, 7 July 2006 (CDT)
  • I keep twigging off of "There's no locking mechanism that *you can see*, either." What if you need rose-colored glasses?--Sfwarlock 22:01, 9 October 2006 (CDT)
  • Gnollish Crossdresser has a miss message: He tries to wax your chest, but it's already as smooth as buttered silk. I think it might be related. -- Annoying nerd 17:43, 20 August 2008 (CDT)
  • From the description of the crowbarrr, I would offer that if there's an effect or other item from that era that has "nuts" in it (Hey Deze nuts?)...you should use the crowbarrr to "crack open your chestnuts"? Anyone want to research this and try it? Not that I think there's anything that has yet to be tried...I'd guess that someone out there used the chest with every single item available in their inventory.--Lukarnis 20:19, 6 November 2009 (UTC)
    • At this point it's pretty clear that this is just a play on words. Take a look at the underworld trunk, same kind of thing -- it cannot be 'used' directly. --Lordebon 23:21, 6 November 2009 (UTC)

Removed bit...

I removed this bit today:

  • Research has indicated that this item can also be used to produce a Spooky Pirate Skeleton familiar hatchling. The formula is 1 Brainy Skull + 1 Eyepatch (meat paste) = 1 Pirate Skull, then use the Pirate Skull while you have a Sunken Chest and 8 Skeleton Bones stockpiled. All items will be deducted from your inventory, and a Spooky Pirate Skeleton will be added.--LoonyLizard 10:40, 12 November 2008 (UTC)

The reference to the Spooky Pirate Skeleton is about 3 lines above and this extra bit seems... extraneous. -- sulfur 15:22, 12 November 2008 (UTC)

testing!...

anybody tried using it with surgical impliments? how about at different moon times, and checking with special glasses it doesn't appear to have any way to open it that you can see --Jotsund 08:03, 8 December 2008 (UTC)

further insight.

how about by using the Navel ring of navel gazing?
it has an intrinsic effect of Omphaloskepsis or Levitation.
levitation on a "sunken" chest, right?--Halfvoid 01:24, 24 February 2009 (UTC)

Remember, People

  • this is always referred to as "the oldest unsolved puzzle in the game." which means that it probably only involves content that was around around the time that the sunken chest was introduced. look at the age of the stuff your new insights involve. is the item number within a hundred or so of the sunken chests (<500)? was the stuff introduced way before NS11? if the answer to either of these questions is no, then you're not even warm. --Evilkolbot 12:27, 24 February 2009 (UTC)

Other Ideas

It seems possible to me that the "sunken chest" is a reference to pectus excavatum, which would make a bit more sense when you use it to create a pirate skeleton familiar. Maybe one of the surgical treatments has some clue to "fixing" the sunken chest? --ThanbyThanby 18:54, 28 May 2009 (UTC)

Seems like a joke to me

In high school in the 70s one of the common jokes told by boys was about a girl who was loved by pirates because she "had a sunken chest." This was of course a derogatory joke about pubescent girls whose breasts simply had not developed. It was mean, as young boys can be. Most of the boys telling the joke also wished beyond hope that they could make it to first/second/third base with a girl, but at that age it's very difficult. I think this item has to be a reference to this joke and situation. --stonecat (signature timestamp button not working)

  • you don't need the button, even ios nowadays has a tilde key and you just use four of them (~~~~) like this: --Evilkolbot (talk) 08:21, 22 January 2015 (UTC)
