Talk:Sword behind inappropriate prepositions

From A KoL Wiki
  • should that not, rather than "on", be "by your side," or is that inappropriateness apposite? --Evilkolbot 01:45, 16 August 2006 (CDT)
    • It looks like it should be, so I fixed it.--Piroteknix 02:05, 16 August 2006 (CDT)
      • "at your side" would also be correct, but we'll probably never know what it was 'supposed' to be. --Quietust 09:05, 16 August 2006 (CDT)
        • at, by, and on are options in the list below. if the preposition is always inappropriate that would be one way of working it out. --Evilkolbot 10:15, 16 August 2006 (CDT)
          • I downloaded the page a couple of hundred times, and at no point was the first word "to" or the second word "above"... I didn't check the others... it seems it's always wrong. Phlip 14:11, 17 August 2006 (CDT)
          • Well, I went through and found out which preposition it refused to give me for each one... and the verdict is "on your side". Phlip 14:39, 17 August 2006 (CDT)
          • because people (ok, me) are so sceptical, and "on" is wrong in context, i did some research. i downloaded the page 1000 times and saw which words didn't occur in the various positions. it's definitely on. i have a spreadsheet of results (and the 1000 pages) if anyone doubts me. kmail me in-game and i'll email you a copy. of the spreadsheet, obviously, although it's not very interesting. --Evilkolbot 09:44, 19 August 2006 (CDT)
            • Technically, "on" is not incorrect - the sword is "on your side", as opposed to "on their side". --Quietust 14:15, 19 August 2006 (CDT)
            • another misunderstanding, i missed that this sword is sentient and can take sides. i forgot this was fantasy and such things are commonplace. --Evilkolbot 17:14, 19 August 2006 (CDT)
          • Out of boredom (during my lunch break at work), I did a similar experiment with 500 page loads and came to the same conclusion. --Quietust 14:14, 19 August 2006 (CDT)
    • Regardless of what it randomizes to, when a word takes the place of "before" in the final sentence, it is taking the place of a conjunction, and therefore the sword involves inappropriate prepositions and one inappropriate conjunction.--Green Lemur 10:32, 31 August 2006 (CDT)
      • True, Lemur, but the word "before" in that final sentence never changes, so the point is moot. When it changes another preposition to before, before remains a preposition, eg. "You hit your opponent before the thigh for 30 damage" or "with this sword before your side." That having been said, I've removed the line that mentions "before" is a conjunction and unbolded the word in the description paragraph, as it has no more bearing than any of the other unbolded words.Jimmyfisher 15:19, 9 October 2006 (CDT)
        • Actually, it does change - try actually looking at the description in-game before making assumptions. The note about 'before' in that cirumstances pertains to the fact that the game treats it as a preposition even though it is not actually a preposition. --Quietust 15:35, 9 October 2006 (CDT)

It might be worth noting that the sword name, itself, contains an inappropriate preposition. "Sword of inappropriate preposisions" would be more . . . appropriate. --Half-a-bee 17:28, 02 September 2006 (CDT)

Uh, that's the joke. --Someone Else 18:21, 2 September 2006 (CDT)

Chat

As of the Jick Show, 10/13/06, having an equpped SBIP now changes all your prepositions in chat as well, except capitalized ones and ones with anything but whitespace next to them. This change was made after my suggestion of same, of which I feel I can be justifiably immensely proud. Personman 02:22, 13 October 2006 (CDT)

Is that supposed to be 10/13/06? Since 9/13/06 fell upon a Wednesday, there was no Jick Show on that night. --RicFule 03:33, 13 October 2006 (CDT)

Yes. I can't read or remember numbers. Fixed. Personman 04:07, 13 October 2006 (CDT)

--Piroteknix 02:07, 16 August 2006 (CDT)

  • This looks like a job for <RandomlySelect> (in {{preposition}}) - "If you want on rise on the masses on the field on combat, then this is the sword you should have on your hand or strapped on your belt. Its temper and sharpness are head and shoulders on the rest. One two, one two, and on and on -- on this sword on your side, it won't be long on victory is on your reach." --Quietust 09:03, 16 August 2006 (CDT)
    • I added a couple more to the list, I think that's the lot. Phlip 14:10, 17 August 2006 (CDT)
    • shouldn't test/preposition take the appropriate preposion as a parameter, so that the one returned is inappropriate? --Evilkolbot 09:47, 19 August 2006 (CDT)
      • And now, over a year later, Timrem has properly implemented this functionality. The template is now extremely ugly, but it works (and hopefully doesn't put too much load on the wiki). --Quietust (t|c) 16:17, 5 December 2007 (CST)

Obscure Reference?

Probably too obscure, but it does seem so similar. The mathematical poetry group Oulipo has a poetic method called N+7. For a given existing text, and a given dictionary, replace every noun with a noun seven words down in the dictionary. Example:

Using The Living Language Common Usage Dictionary: English-Russian, the opening of the book of Genesis becomes:
In the bend God created the hen and the education. And the education was without founder, and void; and death was upon the falsehood of the demand. And the sport of God moved upon the falsehood of the wealth. And God said, Let there be limit; and there was limit.

Effects in combat

I noticed the sword also replaces the prepositions while gaining of effects in combat (such as poison) with inappropriate ones. i.e. You are poisoned near the attack. Is this worth mentioning somewhere or is it included in "replaces prepositions in combat with random inappropriate prepositions"?--Piroteknix 11:50, 1 September 2006 (CDT)

  • I do believe that falls except the umbrella throughout inappropriate prepositions against combat. --Katarani 14:54, 1 September 2006 (CDT)

Recipie doesn't work

I'm having trouble with the recipie. Every time I try to combine a chrome sword with a facsimile dictionary, I get the "doesn't make anything interesting" message. I reverse the order, and I get the same result. And yes, I do have Super-Advanced Meatsmithing. What am I doing wrong? --Thatkidsam 17:45, 8 September 2006 (CDT)

You don't combine them, you smith them. --Hellion 17:50, 8 September 2006 (CDT)

  • ...Wow, I need to play more often, so I don't make these mistakes... --Thatkidsam 23:59, 8 September 2006 (CDT)

Long list

I slapped a div with style="-moz-column-count: 3" around the really long list of prepositions. In firefox, the list will now display in three columns, improving the appearance a bit.

This doesn't seem to cause problems with IE, but if it seems to mess up some other browser it should probably be reverted back. --Starwed 16:22, 9 November 2006 (CST)

Yeah...

Doesn't the hole look of this sword look exactly like Cloud's? Perhaps it's a reference to how freakishly large his is. Bassium!

item drop

dun know if this has already been said, if so delete.

-the sword also occasionally messes up preps in your item drops, as i experienced in the fun house (with no snapshot, sadly)

-You acquire an item: bottle from gin

Old Reference

The google cache previously mentioned in the references section no longer functions, but here's the link that was posted in case it ever again becomes available. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Dorf (talkcontribs) on 08:04, 13 March 2007

Things the sword doesn't affect

It seems the Space Helmet has been confirmed, but there are others. One that I've discovered is areas (Lair of the Ninja Snowmen). Probably adventures too. --Antoids

  • Well, it doesn't change adventure titles, I know that, nor does it change the text of the diary. Come on, it can't mess with *everything* Far easier to say what it does change than what it doesn't.--AltyMcAltAlt 02:57, 4 October 2007 (CDT)

I think that in chat, if you have a preposition capatalized, it won't change it. As an example, I said "Hmm... Sword Behind Inappropriate Prepositions." and it came out just like that, but when I said "Let's try sword behind inappropriate prepostions." it displayed instead, "Let's try sword of inappropriate prepostions."--IkeofCrimea 13:31, 29 May 2008 (CDT)

In addition, I defeated a mind flayer with an angel hair wisp out and I received the message: The merest suggestion of a smile crosses Sheeeeeeshaaaaaa's wispy form as he whispers "You have performed... adequately.". This keeps the "of" in it appropriately.--IkeofCrimea

Plural

The plural for this item says swords ABOVE inappropriate prepositions. Are you sure the change wasn't part of the effect? --Antoids

  • Yeah,it's in the database as Sword Behind Inappropriate Preposition. It's just Jick being silly with plurals.--AltyMcAltAlt 02:57, 4 October 2007 (CDT)

Code

The wiki currently states "You can trick the word substitution in chat by adding a punctuation mark somewhere in the word... This may be due to the fact that ending a sentence with a preposition is considered gramatically incorrect and thus the sword sees no reason to change it." Actually, I would say it's because the code to search for these words uses a space to define the beginning and end of the prepositional string. So, the code will always look for " of " and not replace the "of" in words such as offend, spoof, and other words with the "of" combo in them. As such, when you type "of." in chat, it doesn't register as the proper word to replace, since it doesn't have the space on both ends of the word. -- Asinine 08:09, 27 January 2008 (CST)

Despite the Rage

I don't know if this needs some sort of further spading before being added, but when I got trapped by the C.H.U.M.s in Despite All Your Rage with my SBIP equipped the text was unaltered. --JustDucky 07:37, 9 December 2010 (UTC)

Valhalla Invasion

For the record, it doesn't change prepositions in Valhalla Invasion combat text. --Club (#66669) (Talk) 05:42, 13 May 2011 (UTC)

Availability

As of July 2015, the sword is a possible drop from the Deck of Every Card. This has drastically reduced the price of the sword and the comment about the Staph of Homophones being cheaper is no longer true. Amish Information Systems (talk) 12:14, 23 July 2015 (UTC)
