Talk:The Junkyard
I have just found out that you can go here as a hippy (sp) if you have teleportitis!
--Spatulade 14:34, 8 October 2007 (CDT)
...I can't seem to make any progress in this area. What are you supposed to do? I've used the magnet he gives you on every fight, to no effect.
--CrankyOne 11:58, 26 June 2007 (CDT)
- No idea: I got bored trying, which is why there aren't pages for all the monsters yet.... Flickgc 12:06, 26 June 2007 (CDT)
I'm having the same trouble. But also, did you notice, when you click on "Adventure Again (The Junkyard)" it just take you to http://www6.kingdomofloathing.com/adventure.php?snarfblat=139 instead of &subsnarfblat=1 Bug? Also, could be something to do with the things in that area. For instance maybe if you use a cold combat item it puts the fire out... I'm going on a sodding limb aren't I... --Nossidge 13:41, 26 June 2007 (CDT)
Ah ha! I have it! What you need to do is wait for them to attack you with one of the tools, and *then* use the magnet. The magnet will then cause the tool to come to you.
--CrankyOne 09:55, 27 June 2007 (CDT)
I think the monsters in this zone scale, 'cuz I'm using a character with 629 moxie and I'm still getting hit every round. --LegendaryBard 21:33, 27 June 2007 (CDT)
It's pretty messed up to me. I've burned numerous (50+) adventures here and gotten exactly 1 item. Moved around, too, and not one-hit killing or entangling. Argh! --Reimero 14:20, 28 June 2007 (CDT)
maybe the gremlins are attacking with a skill, which is why we always get hit.(I tried it with 800 moxie and still got hit). --Flyinglama 17:11, 28 June 2007 (CDT)
A couple things I've noticed - 1, I spent ~30 turns in each zone w/ no tools, then spoke to the quest-giver. Each time I spoke to him he pointed me to exactly where the next tool would magically appear, one after the other. 2, as a TT I got the sparkplug (not sure if the reward's class based) --Forsythe 03:57, 29 June 2007 (CDT)
Gremlins always hit you because they are using gremlin juice. --Riotnrrd 10:19, 29 June 2007 (CDT)
Is it just me, or, when trying to adventure here without any adventures does it say "Go back to Crimbotown Not-Too-Distant-Future?" This was post-war.
Edit: It seems to happen to quite a few buildings on the island - most, if not all the buildings did not exist before NS13, except Sonofa Beach, which has the right location. I'll write this up on the (Big) Island talk page. --Lifeforce 03:14, 1 July 2007 (CDT)
Hmmm... it seems that you're more likely to get the correct gremlin if you click out and then reclick the subsnarfblat link than if you go Last Adventure. Could anyone spade this, as I'm no good at stats? --Lordhed 15:33, 5 July 2007 (CDT)
So three of the reward items are muscle oriented and three are myst oriented. I beat it as a frat and for a muscle item (the neckless). Just a guess, but could the myst items drop for hippies, and muscle items for frats? --Univector llama 15:50, 7 July 2007 (CDT)
I don't think there's a correct gremlin, just a correct area. --TechSmurf 16:02, 5 July 2007 (CDT)
If the Gremlin has one of the items, will he always use it on the first attack? Tetra 16:01, 8 July 2007 (CDT)
I burned a ton of adventures here without getting any of the tool items, but all of a sudden I'm getting the special attack messages regularly and using the magnet to get the tools. The only change I can see is that my Phat Loot Lyric wore off. I think that might have been PREVENTING me from getting the tools.--Mustard 17:30, 8 July 2007 (CDT)
As a Disco Bandit I got the Sawblade Shield as a reward.--Mustard 17:33, 8 July 2007 (CDT)
Enemy Vehicles
I eradicated the hippy army once without fighting a Bailey's Beetle. Then I ran through the game after beating the Junkyard quest as a hippy and they started showing up. I think that if you beat it as a frat, mobile-grill units will appear when you fight as a hippy.
If this is the case, then the reward for completing the quest as a hippy may also be the possibility of getting the battered hubcap from the Bailey's Beetle, which is arguably the best shield in the game.--Lauren_zi_an Wormhole
Monsters using specific tools
I've noticed vegetable gremlins uses screwdrivers over two ascensions, and possibly the spider gremlin using plyers (didnt notice the last time). If its so, we could just kill/cleesh the non-related gremlins when looking for the items.--Myst44 04:35, 11 July 2007 (CDT)
The RNG can't be blamed for everything
Here's a bad day: 170+ adventures, only two of the four tools. I am a lv 14 (now lv 15 after 170 gremlins) TT with NO weapon equipped (to get more combat msgs). 170 turns, and only two tools so far. This goes well past bad luck, so I think there is a game mechanic behind this delay. I have two theories. First - has anyone else used the Rock Band Flyers on the gremlins? It could be set up to delay tool appearences when the rock flyers are used on the gremlins so as to prevent getting two mini-quests at the same time. I don't think this one is likely, but I'd like to hear of a counter-example if any of you have one. Second - the moons are almost entirely dark. Only Ronald has a crescent showing; do people find that the bright moon periods lend to a faster gremlin quest, and the dark moon periods lead to a slower time? I would really like to see this spaded further. --Nyl 186 20:45, 8 August 2007 (CDT)
- First off, I've used flyers whilst doing the gremlins and it did not hinder getting the tools for me. Is it possible that your problem is the "adventure again" link problem people have recently been reporting in this thread? If some kind of bug is keeping you stuck in the same subzone, it may explain why you weren't getting the other tool drops. --Prestige 20:53, 8 August 2007 (CDT)
- That would explain everything, yes. I was using the now-fixed broken "Adventure Again" link. That's one less worry.
Twin Gremlins
I had a similarly horrible experience, as the one described in the RNG rant, trying to get the dumb vegetable gremlin to use the screwdriver. I noticed that the Vegetable gremlins I was fighting did not give the battle message about the cabbage. I clicked back to Yossarian and back to the area he told me to, over and over again until finally a vegetable gremlin had a combat message about the cabbage, and then he used the tool right away. Annoying; but when I looked back at what Yossarian had said at the start of the quest about there being two sets of 11 gremlins it made me wonder if there were two of each kind of gremlin. Has anyone else noticed anything similar to this? --Rahmuss 01:20, 10 August 2007 (CDT)
I put a speculative paragraph at the bottom of the main page because I am very convinced that it is correct; but if anyone finds otherwise, or if they simply don't believe it to be the case, then you can remove the paragraph from the main article page. --Rahmuss 14:51, 15 August 2007 (CDT)
Ok, here is what to look for. There are two of each gremlin (except possibly the A.M.C. Gremlin). Here is how you can tell if you're wasting your time waiting for it to use the tool or not.
The Bat Gremlin will have the tool unless it shows the combat message: "It does a bombing run over your head. Dude, you really don't want to know what it just bombed you with. With what it just bombed you. Ow! Eek! Ugh! Ugh! (stench damage)"
The Erudite Gremlin will have the tool unless it shows the combat message: "He uses the random junk around him to make an automatic eyeball-peeler, then uses it on you. Gah! Aiee! Argh! Argh! Oof! Ugh!"
The Spider Gremlin will have the tool unless it shows the combat message: "It bites you in the fibula with its mandibles. The pain is far from nebulous. Eek! Oof! Ow! Ow!"
The Vegetable Gremlin will have the tool unless it shows the combat message: "It picks a beet off of itself and beats you with it. You wish it would have let the beet drop instead. Ouch! Oof!" or "It picks a radish off of itself and tosses it at you. You get run over by a horse. Argh! Ugh! Eek! Eek! Ooh! Eek! Ow!"
There is a possibility that one of these messages may actually be displayed with the gremlin who uses the too. For this gremlin I only have three adventures, lasting 30, 30 and 27 rounds for the gremlin who had the tool to verify which messages he didn't say, so it's possible that one of the above messages is not a clue to whether the Vegitable Gremlin has the tool or not. also :
The Vegetable Gremlin will have the tool if it shows the combat message: "It pummels you with a head of cabbage. It doesn't hurt, but then a stork swoops down and grabs the cabbage, biting your knee in the process. Oof! Eek!"
This also may not be accurate; but out of a total of 174 rounds spent on the Vegetable Gremlin, I only saw that message when the gremlin had the tool.
I forgot to mention something else. I'm wondering if the only gremlins who drop the juice are the ones without the tools. I didn't really pay attention, so if anyone notices one way or the other let me know. It would sure make it easier to modify the wiki if that were the case; but for now I'm not quite sure how to change it.
You can see the info that I logged here if you really want to. --Rahmuss 03:43, 18 August 2007 (CDT)
- I just got the Batwinged Gremlin. I received the bombing run message first, and two rounds later I got the hammer. Anyone else dispute the special message theory? - Asinine 18:08, 28 October 2007 (CDT)
Now the problem is how to update the wiki. I'm open to suggestions. Here are a couple of thoughts:
1) Make two separate gremlins for each type and have a link to each that displays the distinct set of combat messages.
2) Modify the current gremlins listed in the area so that it tells which combat messages to look for.
This information still needs verification though. So whenever anyone goes there take a look and see if you notice anything different or if you can verify what I've found. --Rahmuss 08:54, 20 August 2007 (CDT)
After Completion
Should it be noted that Bailey's Beetle only occurs after completing as a War Hippy, or the War Frat Mobile Grill Unit when completed as Frat Warrior? --Devion 19:07, 27 October 2007 (CDT)
- It's already noted on the quest page. --TechSmurf 19:38, 27 October 2007 (CDT)
Anyone else notice that the picture for the Junkyard on the Island has the rusted out car in the upper right corner, but, when in the junkyard, the car's in the lower left?--Juwl 17:32, 7 March 2008 (CST)
- yes, but since it's the only part of the yard you can see (the rest is non-specific piles of junk AFAICT) it's a picture of a different part, a bit further south-west. --Evilkolbot 03:43, 8 March 2008 (CST)
