Lost and Found and Lost Again

As you're puttering around the trench, you notice some movement out of the corner of your eye, on a ledge about a third of the way down. You move closer to investigate, and see a wizened-looking Sea Monkee, kneeling and studying something on the surface of the ledge. Judging by his apparent age (and gender) you conclude that this is, in fact, the Grandpa you're looking for. "Hey there! Old man!" you say, before realizing that sound doesn't travel far enough underwater for him to be able to hear you. You move closer to say it again, but before you can get to him, he abruptly stands up and steps off the ledge, disappearing deeper into the trench.

Respect Your Elders

You run into Grandpa again, this time running his hands along some strange rock formations on the wall of the trench. You approach him and get his attention. "Hey there, Old Timer. Your family misses you. They'd like you to come home." He looks up from his work and regards you, squinting. "Bah." he says, turning back to the wall and continuing to do... whatever it is that he's doing. "No, seriously. I told your grandson I'd come get you. You should come back with me." He turns to you again. "I said 'Bah,'," he says, "which back in my day, at least, was an expression of dismissal. I'll thank you to leave me to my exploration." "Exploration?" you reply, "What is it you're looking for, exactly?" "I'm not sure yet. I'll know it when I see it, though, and it sure as hell isn't some snot-nosed whippersnapper trying to tell me what to do and where to go!" With one last "Bah." he takes his leave, swimming further down into the darkness of the trench.

You've Hit Bottom

Very near the bottom of the trench, you catch up with Grandpa again. This time he sees you coming, and starts being crotchety before you can even open your mouth. "I'm nearly done, you punk kid. I'll head back to the castle, and to my damned rocking chair before too long, and your little task will be complete. But first, I wanna show you something."

"Okay. Show me what you've found, Old Timer." He doesn't say a word, he just steps around an outcropping of rock, motions for you to follow, and then points at... Wow. He points at one of the most amazing things you've ever seen (and given that you live in a world with almost no sense of continuity or realism, you've seen some pretty freakin' amazing things in your time.) You see the apparent source of the trench, the river that scraped it into the ocean floor over countless centuries. It's no ordinary river, though -- it's a river of Sauce, glowing with the heat of the planet's core. The oldest, hottest, purest Sauce you've ever encountered. Sauce with a capital S (but then, you knew that from the previous two sentences.) You look back at Grandpa. "Deep Sauce. Pretty cool, huh? Do you kids still say 'cool' these days? Say, you know a thing or two about Sauce, don't you? Take some." "But... how?" you reply. He produces a small glass globe and hands it to you. "Pressureglobe," he says, "those Mer-kin bastards carry 'em. Keeps the Deep Sauce contained, so you can leave with it. Give it a shot." You take the globe, uncork it, and collect a quantity of the sauce.

You acquire an item: globe of Deep Sauce

He smiles. "Well," he says, "I'm satisfied. I'll head home now. Stop by later if you'd like. You can help me apply my ointment." "Uhh," you reply. "Just kidding." he says with a wink. "It's actually liniment." "Uhh," you reply again. "Just kidding about that one, too. See ya, punk." As he leaves, you turn your attention to the globe of Deep Sauce. It's beautiful. It's perfect. You can't wait to start experimenting with it. You acquire a skill: Deep Saucery

Use of ink bladder under water (just an auto escape item costs an adventure)

You empty the ink bladder into the water around you. Under cover of darkness, you swim away from your opponent{s}. --Brion thenotgiant 00:38, 12 January 2009 (UTC)

I switched the order of two of the non-combats so they were in a more chronological order. --Rikitikitavi 18:32, 13 January 2009 (UTC)

Has anybody checked to see if there's some sort of hidden penalty to item drops down here? I just fought somewhere around 50 critters with a 25 lb fairychaun and a net +46% to item drops from my gear/skills and I got zero items. In fact, the only way I've gotten anything from critters down here is by using a spooky putty sheet and fighting them on the surface. Even then, 15 fisherfish have only given me 4 rough fish scales.--Harlock the Bard 15:00, 21 January 2009 (UTC)

Noncombat prerequisites

Do we have confirmation that it's having the relevant skill (Tempura/Deep Sauce) that causes the noncombats here to show up, or might it be limited by the player's current class? --Prestige 01:47, 26 January 2009 (UTC)

  • I've permed the Sauceror one and was able to get deep sauce as a Pastamancer. Presumably it's analogous for the other way. --BagatelleT/C 02:57, 26 January 2009 (UTC)
    • Indeed, subsequently I've permed tempuramancy and have been able to get tempura adventure as a non-myst class. So yeah, I guess the only prerequisite is having the skill. --Prestige 05:59, 15 February 2009 (UTC)
