Mapping the violet fog

Playing around in the violet fog for quite some time today, I saw that the encounters don't seem to be random. That makes it possible to make some sort of map, letting you find the "drop" adventure of your choice. I didn't map it completely today, but wrote down some "regular" structures. --NewZorkBat 04:47, 2 June 2006 (CDT)

(edit: I was on a mediocro trip - I think)

  • "Training" --> 6x "this" --> "Fish"
  • "Training" --> 5x "other" --> limerick
  • limerick --> 1x "other" --> "Weapon"
  • "Weapon" --> 3x "other" --> limerick
  • "Weapon" --> 4x "that" --> "Fish"
  • "Fish" --> 4x "other" --> limerick

And so on. I'm sure we can find a structure, easy to read way of showing these ways on a map. --NewZorkBat 04:47, 2 June 2006 (CDT)

The combination 'This, That, The Other' seems to almost allways get you to the "It looks like every poster in every room in the orcish frat house" adventure, except after the "Training" adventure. So:

  • Anywhere but training --> This, That, The other = Poster
  • Anywhere but training --> That, This, The other = Limeric
  • Poster --> 3x this = Fish that smells like food.
  • Poster --> 3x that = Fish that smells like herbs.
  • Poster --> That, The other, This = Fish that smells like alcohol.
  • Limeric --> The Other = Weapon

Not all combinations NewZorkBat listed here work for me. Maybe it changes per user? Or per trip type? These test were conducted with the 'Great' trip. --Twf 06:40, 2 June 2006 (CDT)

Well - I didn't distinguish between different fish encounters, neither different training encounters (I assume there is one each for muscle, moxie and mysticality training). That may be the problem... it could still be mappable. --NewZorkBat 06:48, 2 June 2006 (CDT)

Added another encounter, this time a dude with a bowler and a pipe (2 art references for one). The 'other' choice for this one led to the Astral hat thing. First time ever I got the hat. So, the Limeric leads to the weapon, the bowler-wearing pipesmoker leads to the hat. Now to find the pants... --Twf 07:00, 2 June 2006 (CDT)

More mapping. I think I have it figured, at least slightly:

Do 'That', 'This', 'The other' from anywhere but the trainer. You will get one of 3 adventures:

  • The Limeric adventure. Press 'Other' to get the velvet violet fog with the eye in the sky, and recieve the weapon.
  • The Bowler/Pipe adventure. Press 'Other' to get [somewhere], and recieve the hat.
  • The Busby Berkeley adventure. Press 'That' to get the gold tinted violet fog, and recieve the pants.

(these are missing the pie in the sky and the other one)

Now to find out how to reproduce getting the 'right' encounter. Tried the 'food/alcohol/herbs' as jump-off point to no avail. --Twf 07:13, 2 June 2006 (CDT)

Another trick:

Trainer encounters cycle through 'that that'. Order is Moxie, Mysticality and Muscle. Pressing 'That That This' restarts the cycle.

And, final edit for today:

bicycle encounter -> that this -> fish that changes into alcohol bicycle encounter -> this that -> trainer (cycles)

man on cornflake encounter -> that this -> trainer (cycles) man on cornflake encounter -> this that -> fish that changes into herbs

Nice work! - At first sight, this seems to be in sync with the stuff I wrote down earlier... *frowns at her notepad* --NewZorkBat 09:21, 2 June 2006 (CDT)

After about 15 trips to the fog, I was able to put together a complete map, including 3 different "Cyndi" instances, 3 different "Prince" references, and 3 different "Scary" references.

Each location leads to three pre-set locations, however, the buttons that correspond to them changes from player to player, and possibly from day to day. However, I will post a table as soon as possible that shows which encounters lead to which encounters.

The above comment is exactly correct. Julien's map differs from mine only in what button goes where, which appears to be randomly assigned or rotated. I request that the wikki hold off on publishing the complete map for another 24hrs, to give the playes more time to play with things. --smacfarl 13:16, 2 June 2006 (EST)

Items that can be gained from the Cyndi encounter: munchies pill, ice stein, homeopathic healing powder Items that can be gained from the Scary encounter: Cerebral Crossbow, Cerebral Cloche, Cerebral Culottes Training sessions that can be gained from the Prince encounter: Muscle, Mysticality, Moxie (wow, who'd have guessed? :) )

There are two ways to get to each Cyndi and Prince encounter, and one way to get to each Scary encounte, thus making it slightly harder to find.

I'll try to get a table made up during work today.

--DarkSir 09:31, 2 June 2006 (CDT)

I assembled the data into a map: Violet Fog Map; now I just hope the violet fog is indeed the same for bad, mediocre and great trips, and doesn't randomise per player/ascension/day/mushroom... the map's not particularly pretty, but it's a start. --NewZorkBat 10:46, 2 June 2006 (CDT)

It does randomize per player, but I'm not sure about daily yet. It is however mostly consistant, the locations always lead t othe same other locations, just not necessarily in the same order. Excellent job on the map, by the way. It blows away my table. :) --DarkSir 10:57, 2 June 2006 (CDT)

Well i had a basic map yesterday done (tho it had the eyes / fishs / substats gains all as 1 place) redid it today and over half of yesterdays information is wrong so unless someone can work out a cycle of the changes i suggest that we post an accurate way of working it out rather than a possibley incorrect map. --Orangatuan 12:17, 4 June 2006 (GMT)

NOTE - I have received the Violet Fog twice in the same day, did not ascend. Not sure how much of this will affect it: Lvl 8 Female Disco Bandit, Hopped up on Goofballs, brought the Astral Badger with me. -- AsianicGypsy 11:06, 5 June 2006 (PST)

I've gone through about a dozen astral mushrooms. Each trip, once of the five adventures was the Violet Fog adventure.--JP 11:39, 6 June 2006 (CDT)

Ascension

I've just tried my first trip post-ascension, and it looks as though the actual lay-out of the map doesn't change but the choices to get from one location to another do. I did think that it stayed the same in the middle of the network (if mapped as a triangle), but now that I've looked some more I don't think that that is the case. I haven't yet come across an instance where all three of the possible outcomes are changed around: it looks as though it's always just a swap between two of the options, with the third remaining the same. However, my original map is a rats' nest of lines, and not at all like the neat triangles that everyone else has been doing, so even if I re-mapped entirely I wouldn't really be able to compare it. At the moment, I'm just using my original map and, when something is different, writing it on, rather than trying anything methodical. Flickgc 10:18, 6 June 2006 (CDT)

Did some mapping on my own... seems that adventures certainly aren't random within a single ascension, and that the fog is perfectly mappable. I've taken a look through the mappings listed on the discussion page so far, and it seems pretty clear that it's different for each player.

Interesting, though, that I can't seem to find a route to the Ice Stein or Munchies Pill - and I'm on an Oxycore ascension. I think the items available may be limited to what would benefit you on your present path. I'll do a little more testing once I'm done with the sorceress to see if that affects anything, but would be nice if anyone would confirm this.

--Seraphidel 12:07, 7 June 2006 (CDT)

  • I'm on a teet path, and I can find every item in there. You can miss adventures pretty easy if you just randomly click the buttons. --Exdeath 22:38, 10 June 2006 (CDT)
  • I've mapped out the various possibilities based on the paths from all possible adventures, and thus far I've been unable to find the Stein, or the Pills. Maybe I'm just blind, or there's something I've missed. Will attempt to re-map it sometime, just to make sure. --Seraphidel 01:29, 13 June 2006 (CDT)

Flashbacks?

There has been some discussion on the KoL forums of the possiblity of Astral Mushroom flashbacks, in which one is transported to the Violet Fog for one adventure while *not* under the Half-Astral effect. http://forums.kingdomofloathing.com/viewtopic.php?p=1860287 and http://forums.kingdomofloathing.com/viewtopic.php?t=63104 are the two main threads concerning this phenomenon. On the most recent Jick & The Gang show, this was said: "Got the Violet Fog via Teleportitis, is this a bug? R: You didn't get to the Violet Fog via Teleportitis. X: There's a reason, I won't tell why, it's completely intended." -- Eyeawry 10:57, 4 July 2006 (CDT)

Prince Stat Gains

On level 6, with 33 buffed moxie, 23 unbuffed moxie, and 33 main stat, I got 11 moxie substats.--EtzHadaat 14:53, 16 July 2006 (CDT)

Location Name Mismatches

A number of the location names used in the Violet Fog location page are out of sync with the names used in the in the Violet Fog map page. In fact, it's almost impossible to try to use them in conjunction with each other. We really need to change either the location/adventure names or the descriptions on the Violet Fog map page. I'm not sure which set of names we should use, but it may be that we should stick with the names on the Violet Fog map page so that we're using the same names as the various scripts out there are using. If the map names usage doesn't enjoy widespread currency, then we should stay with the Wiki adventure names because they better describe the adventures and the map page descriptions should be changed. The table below represents a (laboriously compiled) listing of the two different sets of names, with problematic locations colored in shades of red. --Gymnosophist 00:48, 14 September 2006 (CDT)

  • I never said that I was done yet :-P Too much to do in one day. --JRSiebz (|§|) 00:56, 14 September 2006 (CDT)
    • Oh and I named the adventure pages in the following manner, most adventures start out "You approach/see/run in to/encounter a Something", so i used a simplification of the Something, rather than just picking out things throughout/deep within the adventure. --JRSiebz (|§|) 00:59, 14 September 2006 (CDT)
      • I know what you mean - doing the Wiki could easily be a full time job - and Jick just keeps pumping out new content! I like the names you used, it's just that they might get us out of sync with more universally used terminology (if the violet map page names are in any way a "standard"). --Gymnosophist 02:08, 14 September 2006 (CDT)

References

Somehow I doubt that this is a Mel Torme reference -- what does Mel Torme have to do with the psychedelic theme of the area? It's a reference to Jimmy Hendrix's Purple Haze. (I was trying to find a Deep Purple reference in the adventure text as well, but I can't. I think it's just Purple Haze.) --Laa (talk) 17:40, 11 November 2015 (UTC)
