Talk:Violet Fog Map
After a couple of quick tests with a multi, I found that the actual directions the buttons lead are different for everyone. So while I'm 99% sure that Location A will always lead to B, C and D, I don't believe that "This way" is always B, "that way" is always C, and "other way" is always D, for everyone. It WILL remain constant for you, but the next person to try it will have a different configuration.

Ah, so we'll have to generalise the map (I'll do that later) and label the coloured arrows "direction A", "direction B" and "direction C"; with a hint that everyone has to find out which direction is "this", "that" or "other" for them with their current character/incarnation/mushroom/whatever. I'm glad that it doesn't seem to be totally random though, heh. Thanks for your input. --NewZorkBat 11:11, 2 June 2006 (CDT)
Honestly? I'm not sure if that's the case. It may randomize the directions. For my multi, some were shifted down one. But another was shifted up, and yet another was no change.
So it may not be that cut and dry. :( --DarkSir 11:25, 2 June 2006 (CDT)
Awesome map. It would be interesting to see if the remaining links can be filled in nicely by making the map 3-dimensional, and if it works, what shape it would be... --Quietust 11:27, 2 June 2006 (CDT)
- I can make a decent shape up to a point, but I think the devs goofed while they were making the map. The hat-eye and pants-eye's connections should be swapped, otherwise it's perfect.--Glazius 16:56, 2 June 2006 (CDT)
- Another useful thing might be to try including the maze image index (hazemaze1 thru hazemaze4, which appears to be fixed for each location) to aid in organization. Also, what about the entry point? Does it lead to 3 completely random locations, or to 3 fixed spots? --Quietust 11:31, 2 June 2006 (CDT)
- The entry point has the same connectivity as the cliche wizard - bicycle, hatman, and walrus.--Glazius 16:56, 2 June 2006 (CDT)
Regardless of who does the remapping, the colors in this map are wrong. I've done some tests and at times using the same button does not let me follow along arrows of the same color. --Ashallond 14:11, 2 June 2006 (CDT)
That's what the above discussion refers to. While the destinations are right, I don't think it's going to be possible to accurately map which buttons are going to get you where. I have an accurate map of what works for me, and NewZorkBat has an accurate map of what works for him. The question is: Will those maps work for us tomorrow? And if not, how will they change? If they don't change, a worksheet can be made, that lets you draw your own colored lines or something. If it does change, it'll be a learning experience every day. :) --DarkSir 14:28, 2 June 2006 (CDT)
- Actually, I have a map that works for Julien, not me, since it was his data, not mine.. and I'm a "her" 8). --NewZorkBat 01:07, 3 June 2006 (CDT)
- I have worded the texts on the page in a more general way, and included a "how to make your own map". I hope this still turns out useful for some! --NewZorkBat 02:08, 3 June 2006 (CDT)
Quick note. My own map is still usable and accurate for me today. So the directions do not appear to change daily. But it looks like "This Way/That Way/Other Way" may change for each person. --Julien 09:36, 3 June 2006 (CDT)
Below are the results of some experiments on a multi. This was on a "Bad Trip" while I was getting the Cerebral Cloche. As you can see, the map did not quite match the territory, but it was very similar. 'Twill be interesting to see what happens tomorrow. Orbrisa 15:22, 2 June 2006 (CDT)

My test showed the same results as the example map, which is to say, the example and mine were identical. Duty, 10:30 EST June 3rd (EST)
For me, the node connections were consistent with the map, but the links were completely different. It wasn't just a matter of figuring out which direction equaled which color as my graph's cycles were completely different (for example I saw 6 -> this -> 13 -> this -> 14 -> this -> 6). --Mediaboy 10:55, 3 June 2006 (CDT)
Nodes may have multiple destinations per exit
I have recently observed what appeared to be unreachable states in the Fog. After revisiting several times, and remapping, I observed that the "this way" exit from Cornflake brought me to EITHER "Man talking to Elves" or "Prince(Myst)". Details: 3x Mediocre Trips taken today, observed Node 1, "this way" exit lead to Node 2 on some occassions, and Node 18 on others in a single walk thru the Fog. Did not see the "switching" of Node 1, Exit 1 in the first two walks.

I think I saw similar behavior today as well. I saw this cycle: 1 -> this -> 2 -> this -> 5 -> that -> 16 -> that -> 2 -> this -> 1. The "this way" exit of node two was different when the node was entered from nodes 1 and 16. On the same trip my exits for node 19 were 3, 8 and 22 instead of the expected 1, 3 and 22. --Mediaboy 14:54, 4 June 2006 (CDT)
I noticed this a couple days ago, but I'm not 100% sure that it actually happened or if it was just bad mapping on my part. Haven't seen it since. Orbrisa 06:41, 7 June 2006 (CDT)
PDF for mapping
I made a PDF version of the graphical map to make figuring the linkages easier. You can find it at http://casadebender.com/KoL/violetfog.pdf if you are interested. I've been labeling the links (1), (2) and (3) for "this", "that" and "other" respectively when I use it. --Mediaboy 14:59, 4 June 2006 (CDT)
PDF now updated to include "whichchoice" numbers as well as the 1-22 numbering originally used. I also changed the exits from node 19(58) to match my last three trips.
Greasemonkey Script
I've got a prototype greasemonkey script for helping you find your way in the fog. It tracks which rooms you've visited (by multi) and decorates the "this", "that" and "the other" buttons with the name and node number (in both formats) for rooms you've visited before. Using this and the node map you should be able to find your way to any location you'd like. You can check out the script at http://casadebender.com/KoL/mediaboysvioletfogmapper.user.js. The display is still really rough and I'd like to add more features, but it's better than nothing. Someone could take the mapping structure the script uses and make a kolmafia extension that actually gets you the choice you want. It would just take a lot of automated link clicking. --Mediaboy 16:47, 6 June 2006 (CDT)
Possible Error on Map
MaxDemian informed me (and I've confirmed) that the outbound paths shown for location 19 are incorrect. The map currently shows that you can access locations 1, 3, and 22 from location 19. In actuality, you can access locations 3, 8, and 22. I do not believe you can go directly from location 19 to location 1.--Gemelli 14:00, 8 June 2006 (CDT)
- node 20 has two green and a blue exit. there should be a red, no? --Evilkolbot 12:50, 20 July 2006 (CDT)
- similarly, node 16 has two blue exits. --Evilkolbot 12:54, 20 July 2006 (CDT)
Password Hash Request?
I've just removed the following from the end of this article:
- also if you feel you can trust me (most likely noone should lol) with your password, email me your pwd hash. please dont do this if you feel the slightest bit cautious about giving me your password, but i do promise that i will use any hashes sent to me for research only and will not attempt to reverse them, nor will i give them to anyone. thanks!
If anyone sees fit to put it back, that's fine. I just don't like the idea of people requesting anything to do with passwords in the wiki.
- Err, sorry, forgot to sign this. --Skid 20:35, 21 June 2006 (CDT)
Overall Cleanup
I removed a lot of the hedging around how the Violet Fog works as the VF is pretty well known at this point. I also removed the language about green, blue and red specifically aligning with this, that and the other. I moved up the list of locations, as it makes much more sense to explain what numbers goes with what location. Finally, I removed the manual mapping and another method section, as they didn't seem to add much to the page.--Foggy 14:54, 18 September 2009 (UTC)
