+1 if you don't have chalky hands. equipping the pool cue doesn't impact skill. --Arakasi (talk) 14:35, 15 May 2014 (UTC)

  • That is incorrect. It doesn't impact the gain, but it does impact your overall score.-Toffile (talk) 14:45, 15 May 2014 (UTC)
    • Yes, sorry I meant skill gain.--Arakasi (talk) 19:58, 16 May 2014 (UTC)

Skullrock (talk) 21:25, 15 May 2014 (UTC) Edit: I was at 19 Drunkenness, which may have affected it. Skullrock (talk) 15:18, 20 May 2014 (UTC)

When you practice you get +2 for having the pool cue OR chalky hands. no +3 for both though :( Moraglar Khilen (talk) 13:57, 19 May 2014 (UTC)

  • Nope. I just adventured with Chalky Hands only, and got +2 from practicing. I then let it run out and equipped the Pool Cue, with no chalk; practice gave +1 with just the cue. Practicing without either also gave just +1, and finally I practiced with both the cue and chalk, and got +2 (as would be expected for the chalk.) I did not test the chalked weapon, as I didn't get that semirare. --Terion (talk) 15:47, 23 May 2014 (UTC)

I just chose "Hustle to the Other Table and Practice" and got +4 Pool Skill. I was holding a Staff of Fats and had 17 turns of Chalky Hands left.--Puppy528 (talk) 20:18, 24 May 2014 (UTC)

I can confirm that it's +2 with chalky hands and +1 without while practicing. Equipping the pool cue AND having chalky hands while practicing didn't seem to make a difference. HOWEVER the pool cue adds +3 to your skill (You can see this by examining it)- so it's likely it makes beating the ghost easier, but doesn't help when practicing. --BlueMysteryWolf (talk) 03:07, 28 May 2014 (UTC)

I just beat the ghost with 16 pool skill, including chalky hands and pool cue. I'm in a hardcore teetotaler run; could that have any effect? cathartes (talk) 04:49, 30 May 2014 (UTC)

Pool skill=10 (Rack 'em up=1, pool cue, drunkenneß=10, Chalky Hand). Status=succeß.^Blargh (talk) 17:48, 31 May 2014 (UTC)^

As puppy528 says, staff of fats gives +2 learned skill from practicing. Staff +2, chalky hand +1. Cube of billiard chalk and shark cartilage do nothing. Nor does pool cue. --LotsOfPhil

  • Seconded (thirded?) on Staff of Fats. (And this is how I learned that the Racecar brothers will drop the dog photo directly; I was wondering how you could get the Staff before getting the disposable camera in the Bedroom.) Updating the main page. --Terion (talk) 13:25, 7 June 2014 (UTC)

Added several failure messages. Some of them seem drunkenly slurred (I was at 24 of 34 drunkeness <AoSP>) so its possible they only happen above some drunkeness limit. --Terion (talk) 15:05, 7 June 2014 (UTC)

Necessary Skill

I believe I just passed with 18 total skill. No explicit +pool skill items or effects; I was wearing a fuzzy montera, which does mention a pool shark in its description, but does not explicitly state +pool skill. 24/34 drunkeness, which should be -18 skill (+10 for the first 10, -28 for the next 14.) I started at a Quest Log-stated 23 skill (10 perma-skill and the rest from testing practicing amounts yesterday), which should have been 5 after factoring in drunkeness, and started collecting failure messages. I passed on the 14th try, after 13 failures; Quest Log now shows 36 skill (18 after factoring drunkeness.) I'll do similar next run, but without the montera, to see if it might have an invisible effect or not. --Terion (talk) 15:05, 7 June 2014 (UTC)

  • Yep, fuzzy montera has no effect. I just practiced up to 36 skill, with the same 24/34 drunkeness (-18 skill), and passed the Hustle test on the first attempt. (Yeah, meant to start a couple points lower and fail-practice my way up to the win, but screwed up my math.) Final calculated skill of 18 *without* the montera = still passing. --Terion (talk) 22:09, 12 June 2014 (UTC)

I just succeeded with 16 Pool Skill, according to my quest tracker. Chalky Hands, dead sober, no other modifiers. Confirmed the number in my quest log.--Old one 15 (talk) 00:52, 13 June 2014 (UTC)

I managed to just do the same: 16, Chalky Hand and Staff of Fats equipped, no booze yesterday or today. (On a HC TT Level 12 multi I was just resuming after a long abscence.)-Foggy (talk) 17:08, 15 June 2014 (UTC)

16 here as well. 10 permanent, totally sober, with Chalky Hand for +3, lost the first three times (13, 14, 15), passed with 16 (confirmed in quest log afterwards.) Foggy, was that TT character only at 8 permanent? Because it would have +8 (+3 from chalky hand and +5 from staff of fats.) I wonder if the effect of booze might be slightly different than we think; would be good to get some more sober results, see if it's always 16 when sober. --Terion (talk) 20:09, 18 June 2014 (UTC)

Also beat with just 16. Page updated to reflect this.--MattG987 (talk) 21:40, 10 July 2014 (UTC)

Just lost to the ghost at 16: same condition as above. Won next time around (17 skill). Loss message wasn't one already listed. Didn't take it down, but the gist was that you run the table for a while, then the ghost decides to stop going easy on you.--Old one 15 (talk) 20:11, 15 July 2014 (UTC)

Max pool skill?

What is the maxiumum pool skill you can earn within one ascension?--Hastifer (talk) 21:30, 1 July 2014 (UTC)

    • There doesn't seem to be a max. I'm currently at 102. Yikes. --Hastifer (talk) 15:57, 2 July 2014 (UTC)
    • I had over 10k in a previous ascension. (there was no trophy for over 9000!) And then a clanmate beat me at the clan pool table, so he went higher. --Plater (t|c) 14:12, 4 September 2014 (UTC)
