Talk:World events

From A KoL Wiki

If you're gonna list "NS13 introduced", it probably makes sense to also list the dates of introduction of Hobopolis, the Sea, and the Slime Tube. Maybe VIP lounge.

http://kol.coldfront.net/thekolwiki/index.php/History_of_loathing has pretty much everything you put in this article, only "summarized". Therefore, I think this is kind of a redundant page. Argus 06:58, 4 January 2011 (UTC)

You both raise valid points. I'll explain my inspiration for this page so you can maybe understand my intentions. I was updating Template:Dressing for success legend so the Uncle Hobo gear could be properly categorized. The yellow section is the new one. I wanted some sort of event history page to link out to. One which showed past content in some kind of meaningful context. The Category:History page is a mess. Category:Events is more for recurring events, although it inexplicably contains Columbus Day and Crimboween. The History of Loathing pages are so totally inclusive that separating out major and minor changes is nigh impossible. The stuff on this list is the back story of KOL, but it just kind of gets lost because it's "old" content which makes keeping track of it a low priority.

I'd agree Ascension and NS13 are the two non-conformists currently on the list. I'd be more in favor of dropping them, rather than adding the VIP lounge, for instance. I'm sure the list could both lose and gain some things. Maybe the whole thing is redundant. I don't know. It just seemed like something of this sort should exist, but it didn't. I thought I'd give it a shot.--Tainted Food Product 07:53, 4 January 2011 (UTC)

I can't speak for Ascension, but NS13 was a world event. As I recall Storm Clouds gathered at the top of the tower and the Naughty Sorceress appeared at the Grim Grimacite site. Since there were changes and at least one adventure associated with this I think it counts as a world event, not just a content rollout. --Bale 10:08, 4 January 2011 (UTC)

I don't think it is a bad idea to have a quick history like this. That said, this is missing a lot, and should have more explanation. Consider White Wednesday, which could be described as a "Database screw-up that lost some saved state for players, seeming to throw them backwards in time. This lead to the petrified time item being given to all players, the time catastrophe events in game, and the miniscule temporal rip Mr. Store Item. The time catastrophe lives on in the Cola War battlefield." And I've still got my Yeti Protest Sign. --Club (#66669) (Talk) 16:05, 4 January 2011 (UTC)

I disagree. To take your example, all that information is already on the White Wednesday page. Those curious can certainly go to that page to read up on what it is. This is clearly a quick-and-dirty overview of content. --Lxndr 16:33, 4 January 2011 (UTC)

Yes, it's "quick-and-dirty", which is okay for a first draft, but really, doesn't seem right long term. Sure, someone can, and should if interested, click through to the White Wednesday page, but the name of the page gives no hint as to what it contains. --Club (#66669) (Talk) 19:24, 4 January 2011 (UTC)

  • Yeah I had no idea what this page might have contained. How about naming it "Special Events" or "One-Time Events"----Icon315♕ (|) 21:40, 4 January 2011 (UTC)
    • I don't mind the current name, although those are good too. I do think the page should be linked from somewhere though. --Fig bucket 23:01, 4 January 2011 (UTC)
      • The current name comes from a general term, "world event" which I've heard around. I don't even know where. I think that the term is common in World of Warcraft. (I don't play WoW). I'm pretty sure Jick has used on his radio show. Would "KoL World Events" fit better? Or, "KoL Historical Events"? --Tainted Food Product 00:07, 5 January 2011 (UTC)
I like the name World Events, it certainly is how Jick refers to these recently. --Starwed 06:11, 5 January 2011 (UTC)

I still feel that something like this page should exist, but I'm not at all sure that this is the best way to list this stuff. And, I don't think many people actually ever see it. If anyone has a better option, I'm open to suggestions. --Tainted Food Product 22:08, 3 July 2012 (CEST)
