There are some vague or non-exact figures and information on this page. Some spading is required.

You sit down to practice. After all, practice makes perfect, and nobody's perfect, so that means you should...never practice? Wait, never mind. Practicing is good.
- Without enough straw in your inventory (and not mastered):
You don't have enough straw to practice making filling.
- With straw already mastered:
You are already a master straw craftsman and no longer need to practice with it.
- Otherwise:

- First few times:
You practice making filling out of straw, but nothing works. Why is this so hard for a magical being such as yourself, you may wonder? Excellent question. You're pretty sure you'll figure it out after roughly, say, X more tries, though!
- One off before mastering:
You feel very close to figuring out how to make filling. You think one more try will get you there!
- When mastering:
That's it! You've figured it out! You know how to make filling out of straw!

Notes
- One craft will require practicing 5 times, another ?21-30? times, and the third ?65-73? times. These requirements appear to be chosen randomly.
- You need to practice a total of 100 times to achieve mastery of all three crafts.
