- The Ring is the American version of the Japanese horror film RING, based on the popular novel by Koji Suzuki, in which the victims of a vengeful spirit's curse receive a mysterious telephone call and die within seven days.
- The plural form of the item is also a reference to the same movie, in which the curse is passed down through copies of a videotape.
