Mr. Items

Broadly speaking, for hardcore, the Mr. Items can be split into Bookshelf items and Familiars. No other Items are useful in a Hardcore Ascension. I have arranged the Mr. Items in the order I think they should be purchased.

Familiars

  • He-Boulder: If you only get one of the items on the entire page, get this one. Once each 150 turns, the Boulder allows you to force every single item to drop from a monster, and can save you hundreds of turns in a run. No longer will you have to search the Harem for all the items, or waste 15-20 turns in Itznotyerzitz Mine, or have to wait for the Ketchup Hound to drop for ages, or the Frat War outfit (or the Hippy, if you're doing the war that way). Honestly, this is the single best item for Hardcore ascensions in the game. End story.
  • Llama Lama: The Llama acts as a volleyball at 1/2 the weight. Importantly, it drops gongs after combats. These gongs will either allow you to powerlevel, or more importantly, take on Birdform. When in Birdform (which lasts 15 turns), you will have the opportunity to use powerful combat skills, and be given a glimmering roc feather when it's over. This gives you 8 more precious turns, and some stats, which will really speed up your first day if you can get to Level 4 to use them.
  • Baby Sandworm: Similar to the Llama, the Sandworm is a Sombrero that drops agua de vida after combat. You don't have to do anything to earn the agua, or mess about with complicated birdform, you just have to wait. When used, the agua de vida gives an average of 7.5 adventures and no stats, but it's great in the later half of the run when you don't really mind about the small stat gains.
  • Frumious Bandersnatch: This is a volleyball which will give you some free runaways (weight/5 of them, to be precise) if Ode to Booze is active. It's not THAT helpful for non-myst classes, but will save some turns per run due to the runaways. For myst classes, its combat augmenting skills are very useful. It's a great familiar to have, but should by no means be picked up first.

Llama vs. Sandworm

A question that comes up a lot. If you're only going to get one of them, get the sandworm hands down. The sombrero is great for stats in the latter half of the ascension, and the agua de vida is a hell of a lot easier to manage. In the end, get both. To start with, get the sandworm.

Boulder vs. Bander

Boulder. There's absolutely no shadow of a doubt about this. The He-Boulder is THE single best familiar to have. The Bandersnatch will save you nowhere near the amount of turns the boulder will. End story.

Bookshelf (Tomes)

Regardless of how many tomes you have, you may use three tome uses a day, and no more. You may use all three casts from a single tome, or use one from one and two from another, or one from each, but no more than a total of three. I will ignore the snowcones here, as they're completely beaten by stickers and sugar anyway.

  • Tome of Sugar Shummoning: Sugar sheets can be folded into a variety of items. The most important are the sugar shirt, which gives +3 to stat gains for 30 fights, and the sugar shield, which gives +10 to familiar weight for 30 fights. The shirt is best used on Day 1, of course, and the shield best used for using another bandersnatch runaway per day (if you have one, of course), or for making your hound dog heavier for Sonofa Beach.
  • Tome of Sticker Summoning: With each summon of stickers, you get 3, so if you use all 3 of your summong, you'll get 9 stickers. I personally feel stickers are better than Sugar Sheets should you only be able to have one, but they're more expensive and don't justify the price.

If you have both tomes, then I highly suggest summoning three sugar sheets and turning them all into shirts on day 1, and then summoning stickers from then on, except for the odd sugar shield.

Bookshelf (Librams)

Non-Mr. Items

There are a few other skills and familiars which can be useful to you when playing hardcore.

  • Slimeling: This familiar is a fairy that also acts like a starfish, i.e. gives you MP, when you feed it equipment you've picked up in-run.
  • Jumpsuited Hound Dog : This is a fairy at 1.25x the weight, but importantly, he gives you +combat% for each 6 lbs of weight he has. This is important for speeding up Sonofa Beach. Don't be fooled, the puppy is by no means as necessary as Olfaction, so DON'T get him first.
  • Exotic Parrot: Anyone can buy this for 500,000 meat at The Black Market. It's a lot of money, and only worth it if you have it to burn, but it is useful for completing the Tr4pz0r quest and getting yourself 5,000 meat early.
