Introduction to HC Speed Ascensions
Welcome to the very big optimization problem with many competing and sometimes contradictory goals that is the Kingdom of Loathing. As a bonus, I hear there's also some great writing and jokes along the way.
My first bit of advice is: don't get beaten up.
It seems obvious, but that really needs to be said. It's tempting to try and go things as close to the edge as you can get to shave off turns, but if you get beaten up, you're going to lose out a lot more than you'd have probably gained.
Specifically you'll lose:
- the fight when you got beaten up including
- stats from that fight
- items from that fight
- 3 turns of progress in the area where you'd gotten beaten up (probably)
- it may not be AS bad if you have some back farming yet to do
- Meat/MP (or an adventure if you absolutely have to rest) to regain HP
The two main culprits in my experience are +ML and inattention.
Familiars
Familiar management is tricky, and often seems fiddly.
When to run: You'll want a stat familiar when you don't need anything else.
When to run: When you're in a zone specifically for an item, or you're in a zone where useful items drop. This may surprisingly end up being most of the time.
When to run: Nuns, Boss bat guards.
When to run: When you need MP,
4 Before 40
Misc
Boombox/Nets: Damage, Stuns, and Delevles. Very useful against bosses (including the NS).
