- This item is a reference to The Maltese Falcon. In the novel, "a half-filled package of violet pastilles" is among the items found in Joel Cairo's pockets.
- "Pastille" is another term for "lozenge", "hard candy", or "troche". They were also historically lozenge-shaped bundles of medicinal herbs, which would be burnt. They later also become comprised of fragrant components, to be burned to mask foul odors.
