Most [[:Category:Skills|skills]] in the Kingdom of Loathing can be learned permanently by [[Ascension|ascending]] and choosing to "perm" it. It costs 200 [[Karma]] to mark a skill [[Ascension#Hardcore_Difficulty|Hardcore]] permanent, which means that, unless in certain [[Special challenge path|challenge paths]] or [[Bad Moon]], you will have that skill. It costs 100 [[Karma]] to mark a skill Permanent, which means that, unless in the conditions above, you will have that skill if in a [[Ascension#Normal_Difficulty|Normal]] ascension or lower. It also costs 100 [[Karma]] to upgrade a skill from Permanent to Hardcore Permanent.

Many of the [[Skills Obtained From Items]] may be permed as well, but some are automatically marked Hardcore Permanent upon receiving the skill. As a good rule of thumb, if the item is a [[Meat Pasting]] ingredient, you can apply [[sandpaper]] to it to gain a crafting recipe, and it will need to be permed. Else, if it's a rare item (such as a past [[Crimbo]] item, or [[Manual of Transcendent Olfaction]]), it will be [[:Category:Skills Which Are Automatically Hardcore Permed|automatically marked Hardcore Permanent]]. If neither of these are true, you will have to perm the skill.
