=== [[Haiku katana]] ===
*you're aware of the [[Talk:Haiku katana|discussion]] about whether the page should be in haiku at all, so i was wondering why you would make such a change to the see also section. how are links confusing? they display the destination on hover in most browsers. --[[User:Evilkolbot|Evilkolbot]] 06:32, 5 September 2008 (CDT)
**I supported the rest of the page but I feel as if the usefulness of the See Also section is the standardized way in which the items are categorized. While there was clearish consensus in favor of Haikus for the rest of the page, a few people complained about the See Also section exclusively (who supported the rest of the page), so I figured that it would not be unreasonable to change it. Anywho, the most recent version fits both needs nicely.--{{User:SomeStranger/sig}} 22:39, 5 September 2008 (CDT)

*MaxDemian has been known to do such stupid things as this in the past.  I'd say if it happens again, it wouldn't be unreasonable to give him a few days off via bannination.  He has a tendency to go around putting his name on any page he can think of as well.  Keep an eye on him.  --[[User:Jinya|jin]] 22:27, 7 June 2006 (CDT)
*[[Template:DATE April 1]]
**One reason it annoyed me so much was because I'd just been looking at his contributions list, and the vast majority were the same kind of stuff, where he'd put some self-praise on one page or another and someone else would take it out again, lather-rinse-repeat. So there didn't seem much point in putting a note on his talk page -- he'd already shown a lack of caring what other people thought. I probably got a bit carried away with the revert comments, though. Sorry about that. -- [[User:Old Ned|Old Ned]] 02:51, 8 June 2006 (CDT)

==UTF-8 conversions==
*[[Template:DATE April 12]]
I just noticed that your bot is changing things like &amp;ldquo; and &amp;rdquo; to UTF-8 characters, according to the save comments. Unfortunately, it's not changing them to the ''right'' characters -- instead of changing them to the "curly" quotes that those entities represent, it's simply changing them to the standard ASCII "typewriter" quotes, which is what we were trying to get away from by using the &amp;blah; codes. (You can see the differences better if you change your default font to something like Times Roman; Arial doesn't show much difference.) Can you fix that, please? -- [[User:Old Ned|Old Ned]] 04:40, 10 June 2006 (CDT)
*[[Template:DATE April 13]]
*That's odd, I don't even remember replacing quotations. I replaced apostrophes at one point if that is what you are talking about... If that is the case it has something to do with the fact that I have to run it through the windows cmd, which has almost no character support at all =/.--[[User:SomeStranger|<font color="green">SomeStranger</font>]] <small>([[User talk:SomeStranger|<font color="green">T</font>]] | [[Special:Contributions/SomeStranger|<font color="green">C</font>]])</small> 06:30, 10 June 2006 (CDT)
*[[Template:DATE April 14]]
**You're right, it was apostrophes. I just assumed you were doing the quotes as well. After writing that first comment above, I also noticed that the article where I'd noticed the change had been updated by your bot in May, so it was way too late for you to correct the bot as it had probably finished updating all the pages long before. Oh, well. At least we still have time to figure out a cleaner way to handle the quotes. -- [[User:Old Ned|Old Ned]] 00:26, 17 June 2006 (CDT)

****Oh, so you want a script that records everything that you do in KoL? That could be interesting. If you wanted to throw an even better twist on it we could have it automatically write that data to the wiki every once in awhile. Wow, that would be freaking awesome. In fact, so awesome that I think I will do it. I have to look into the art of substrings a bit more first, but this should not be too tricky. --[[User:SomeStranger|<font color="orange">SomeStranger</font>]] ([[User talk:SomeStranger|<font color="green">t</font>]]|[[Special:Contributions/SomeStranger|<font color="green">c</font>]]) 01:27, 20 August 2006 (CDT)

== Signature ==
*[[Template:DATE August 21]]

*[[Template:DATE August 22]]
Basically, here's how it works:
*[[Template:DATE August 23]]
# Set your nickname to <nowiki>{{User:SomeStranger/sig2}}</nowiki>. A subst: will get dropped in.
*[[Template:DATE August 24]]
# Fill [[User:SomeStranger/sig2]] with <nowiki>{{User:SomeStranger/sig}}</nowiki>.
*[[Template:DATE August 25]]
# Fill [[User:SomeStranger/sig]] with your signature.
*[[Template:DATE August 26]]
Alternately, you could just do it the exact opposite of what Dehstil does - have your user page contain <nowiki>{{User:SomeStranger/sig}}</nowiki> in an includeonly block, then put your actual sig in the outside page. Dehstil's method is a rather bad idea, since editing his user page will cause tons of talk pages to be regenerated. I personally prefer the method I outlined above, since it doesn't clutter my user page. --{{User:Quietust/sig}} 17:35, 25 October 2006 (CDT)
*[[Template:DATE August 27]]
*I think I'm confused why anyone would need a template/subpage for a signature... what's wrong with just editing the "nickname" part (which ends up being in your sig) on the "User profile" page of your [[Special:Preferences]]?  Or am I missing something? [Insert note here about the "Raw signatures (without automatic link)" checkbox here] --[[User:JRSiebz|JRSiebz]] ([[User talk:JRSiebz|&#x260E;]]|[[Special:Contributions/JRSiebz|&#167;]]|[[Special:Listusers/sysop|&#8225;]]) 19:13, 25 October 2006 (CDT)

**Because they tend to get very long which can be very annoying on a talk page...I don't know...unless it causes a lot of wiki lag I think this is a good idea....--{{User:SomeStranger/sig}} 20:02, 25 October 2006 (CDT)

**Ah, editing my user page does do that...sorry, not too much forethought. I never put anything on my user page anyways though. :P--{{:User:Dehstil}} 22:33, 25 October 2006 (CDT)
*[[Template:DATE August 3]]
**On Wikipedia's user signature preferences pages, the following is appended by the "raw signature" checkbox:<br />"''Raw signature (If unchecked, the contents of the box above will be treated as your nickname and link automatically to your user page; if checked, the contents should be source code, including all links. Don't use templates or external links in your signature)''"<br/> and if you follow the "sign your posts" link, you get to a page which says: <br />"''Transclusions of templates and parser functions in signatures (like those which appear as <nowiki>{</nowiki>{User:Name/sig}}, for example) are currently impossible, because the developers have determined them to be an unnecessary drain on the servers. (Any template or parser function you enter will be substituted automatically.) Transcluded signatures require extra processing—whenever you change your signature source, all talk pages you have posted on must be re-cached.<br/>Signature templates are also vandalism targets, and will be forever, even if the user leaves the project. Simple text signatures, which are stored along with the page content, use no more resources than the comments themselves and avoid these problems.''"  That's how wikipedia "does" it ;-) --[[User:JRSiebz|JRSiebz]] ([[User talk:JRSiebz|&#x260E;]]|[[Special:Contributions/JRSiebz|&#167;]]|[[Special:Listusers/sysop|&#8225;]]) 19:16, 29 October 2006 (CST)

There was never any request by Asymmetric to not spoil this. There is the self-interest question, so a selfish person would not spoil. However, if a player has acquired one and is generous enough to wish to reveal the mechanism to everyone else, that is their business. I would ask you to remove it entirely, but at least remove the reference to Assymmetric so as not to make them look like arseholes. --[[User:Killerrabbit|Killerrabbit]] 15:05, 13 July 2007 (CDT)

Whoa, talking about myself. Cool.

  • Hate to break it to you, but you didn't fix the template. It is quite a bit better than before but it's still a bit of whack. --Nucleon 22:14, 25 October 2006 (CDT)
    • Never mind, I started writing this before you finished tidying up. --Nucleon 22:17, 25 October 2006 (CDT)

Hey just thought i'd let you know that i added my display case to my page... and gave the code an overhaul...--Thou Shalt Perish 21:00, 2 April 2006 (CDT) http://kol.coldfront.net/thekolwiki/index.php/Monster_Level there's the thing... i was trying to link to it, but to no avail

  • thanks for the heads up. as it was, the edit on the template looked like it was an edit for the notes section, thus my panic. i'll try again with the reference. --Evilkolbot 11:36, 13 April 2006 (CDT)
  • to go back to the comment on my original edit, could there be a template for common references? bumble bee man is a great favourite, and occurs pretty much wherever bees or anything bee-related intrude on kol. --Evilkolbot 11:41, 13 April 2006 (CDT)

Actually, a number of pages have External Links sections. But your Frank Gorshin trophy edit is fine. --Gymnosophist 17:45, 14 April 2006 (CDT)

  • so, is the {{w|1}} template non-standard and to be removed? without access to the discs, is it possible to search for it? --Evilkolbot 15:51, 27 April 2006 (CDT)
  • you're aware of the discussion about whether the page should be in haiku at all, so i was wondering why you would make such a change to the see also section. how are links confusing? they display the destination on hover in most browsers. --Evilkolbot 06:32, 5 September 2008 (CDT)
    • I supported the rest of the page but I feel as if the usefulness of the See Also section is the standardized way in which the items are categorized. While there was clearish consensus in favor of Haikus for the rest of the page, a few people complained about the See Also section exclusively (who supported the rest of the page), so I figured that it would not be unreasonable to change it. Anywho, the most recent version fits both needs nicely.--SomeStranger (t|c) 22:39, 5 September 2008 (CDT)

Standards

  • i'm sorry about the Carnivorous Moxie Weed. i changed it to be like the moxie weed. is there a standard somewhere that can explain the difference? --Evilkolbot 17:38, 12 May 2006 (CDT)
  • /me slaps head. i can be so dumb. i think it's time i went to bed. thanks for the clarification. --Evilkolbot 17:43, 12 May 2006 (CDT)

Peeled Eyeballs

Its clearly not +40% items if you do any testing... why did you change it back? +15% seems to be the correct number.

Actually I calculated everything correctly, the person commening made the mistake. Base rate for beans is 50%. 30pounds of fairy love gets it to 30*2.5=+75%. +100% is needed to make beans drop all the time as they have a 50% base rate. Using Eyedrops and a 30 pounds fairy you do NOT get beans to drop every time. This puts the upper limit on the drop rate to be < 25%. Adding a miner's helmet and they STILL don't always drop. Add a baron's monocle however instead and they do always drop. This puts the eyedrops at at least 15% and less than 20%. Since Jick likes mulitples of 5 I put it as 15%, but it could be 17.5%. I'll change it back.--D0om 18:43, 14 May 2006 (CDT)

KWE

I'm not terribly interested in continuing to add the KWE tournaments - if somebody else wants to take care of them (and assuming somebody can figure out the payout rates we missed from the past fights), then whatever. --Quietust 22:40, 21 May 2006 (CDT)

Farming Analysis

The script is ready :)--Dehstil 00:18, 22 May 2006 (CDT)

I ported the fullness data wrong when I copied it. It should be fine now, but all the data will need to be double checked and such. It's also missing foods and booze and is outdated because I copied it from an archive of ohayou's data from last year or something. The script outputs wiki code for the table now, so yay.--Dehstil 22:40, 22 May 2006 (CDT)

Epic Weapons

Considering that weapons have multiple categories, including one-handed weapons and staves/staffs/swords/clubs, the Epic Weapons are somewhat important. Even if there's only six, they still deserve their own category. --Rai 08:48, 25 May 2006 (CDT)

Needs Content

All-righty. Just seemed silly to have a Needs Content category full of information that no one short of Jick can fix. Makes it very difficult for users to get a quick list of pages to which they can dedicate their time. But, if that's not what that category is for, then so be it. I'll stop. I was just attempting to make that category page more useful like similar category pages on Wikipedia. -- Turias 16:17, 5 June 2006 (CDT)

Edit Wars

Are you an admin? I think we need to do something about MaxDemian. I caught him editing two pages tonight to remove links to other door code generators and include only his, labeled things like "MaxDemian's (The Original)" and similarly self-promoting bullshit. I checked his contributions list, and he has a real history of this sort of thing -- about 90% of his changes have been similar self-promotion ("First spoiled by MaxDemian's Item Database", that kind of thing), which have all been reverted -- sometimes several times in a row -- by whoever happened to notice.

Then after I undid his changes tonight, we got into an edit war as he kept putting them back and I kept undoing them. I think he needs to be blocked for a few days to let him know he can't mess around like that. -- Old Ned 05:46, 7 June 2006 (CDT)

Both of you were being silly, actually. No need to argue through the revert bits. Of course, if you really needed to, I'm sure they can edit protect a page like wikipedia does, but it doesn't need to come down to that, right? --Jonzay 05:52, 7 June 2006 (CDT)
I don't think this matter warrants blocking. While removing other names and adding his own with "the original" is childish, it is certainly not a capital crime. On wikipedia they have something called the 3three-revert rule. On the KoL wiki we tend to not have anything of that nature because KoL is a mature game, with mature players who have common sense. Sure, he probably should not have added himself in such a way. Sure, you were right to revert him the first time, maybe even the second time. But after the third or fourth time it is getting old. Not once did you leave a note on his talk page where you could discuss the reasons why he might not do what he did, not once did you even talk to him (besides leaving messages in recent changes). So here is my suggestion to you; let it be. The only case that would warrant a revert is if he deleted other code solvers. Besides that this issue is much to minor for any more though. --SomeStranger (T | C) 06:16, 7 June 2006 (CDT)
Looking at the history, he actually did delete the links to the other ones at one point. Not that it is any of my buisness, but it was taking up a hefty bit of the recent changes. >.> --Jonzay 07:12, 7 June 2006 (CDT)
I realize that he did delete the other ones. I mentioned in the big block of text above that I did take issue with the removal of other links, not so much with the addition of his own. To reiterate, silly notes about being original, while childish, do not warrant a revert. On the other hand, removing existing links is not permitted.--SomeStranger (T | C) 09:54, 7 June 2006 (CDT)
  • MaxDemian has been known to do such stupid things as this in the past. I'd say if it happens again, it wouldn't be unreasonable to give him a few days off via bannination. He has a tendency to go around putting his name on any page he can think of as well. Keep an eye on him. --jin 22:27, 7 June 2006 (CDT)
    • One reason it annoyed me so much was because I'd just been looking at his contributions list, and the vast majority were the same kind of stuff, where he'd put some self-praise on one page or another and someone else would take it out again, lather-rinse-repeat. So there didn't seem much point in putting a note on his talk page -- he'd already shown a lack of caring what other people thought. I probably got a bit carried away with the revert comments, though. Sorry about that. -- Old Ned 02:51, 8 June 2006 (CDT)

UTF-8 conversions

I just noticed that your bot is changing things like &ldquo; and &rdquo; to UTF-8 characters, according to the save comments. Unfortunately, it's not changing them to the right characters -- instead of changing them to the "curly" quotes that those entities represent, it's simply changing them to the standard ASCII "typewriter" quotes, which is what we were trying to get away from by using the &blah; codes. (You can see the differences better if you change your default font to something like Times Roman; Arial doesn't show much difference.) Can you fix that, please? -- Old Ned 04:40, 10 June 2006 (CDT)

  • That's odd, I don't even remember replacing quotations. I replaced apostrophes at one point if that is what you are talking about... If that is the case it has something to do with the fact that I have to run it through the windows cmd, which has almost no character support at all =/.--SomeStranger (T | C) 06:30, 10 June 2006 (CDT)
    • You're right, it was apostrophes. -- Old Ned 00:26, 17 June 2006 (CDT)

vKol --> TheKolWiki

Should all pages in that namespace be moved? p.s. thx with the date templates :)--Dehstil (t|c) 22:12, 27 June 2006 (CDT)

Yes they should all be moved. The main namespace of the wiki is TheKolWiki, not vKol.--SomeStranger (t|c) 06:24, 28 June 2006 (CDT)

Moons

//10800000=time zone offset+time of kol rollover, in milliseconds
//76=day offset to June, 1 2006
//176=days in a moon cycle
//86400000=milliseconds in a day
var time=new Date();
var days=(Math.floor((time.getTime()+10800000)/86400000+76)%176);

I may have messed up the offsets, but maybe not. It's 8:13 on my computer right now, soo rollover happens at 11:00 for me, right?--Dehstil (t|c) 20:14, 1 August 2006 (CDT)

Greasemonkey Scripts

  • I was considering some kol spading stuff, but since you're already messing around with that sort of stuff, I was wondering if you'd be interested in something like that. (consumption info, hit/miss messages, monster levels, maybe even pulverizing, etc).--Dehstil (t|c) 19:29, 19 August 2006 (CDT)
    • What do you mean?--SomeStranger (t|c) 21:02, 19 August 2006 (CDT)
      • I was messing around with a greasemonkey script that logged adventure/stat gains from food and such, but it wasn't working right; I was hoping somebody could figure it out. Seeing as you were messing around with greasemonkey scripts a lot, I would know how to get it work.--Dehstil (t|c) 23:29, 19 August 2006 (CDT)
        • Oh, so you want a script that records everything that you do in KoL? That could be interesting. If you wanted to throw an even better twist on it we could have it automatically write that data to the wiki every once in awhile. Wow, that would be freaking awesome. In fact, so awesome that I think I will do it. I have to look into the art of substrings a bit more first, but this should not be too tricky. --SomeStranger (t|c) 01:27, 20 August 2006 (CDT)

KoL Staff Meeting 8pm CDT Friday

We will attempt to have a monthly KoL meeting in IRC. The meeting will be on irc.coldfront.net in #chatting and take place this Friday at 8PM CDT. Please try and attend, thank you.

Also, I need your email address. Everyone else got the notice sent to them that way, but I have NO email for you. --jin 12:41, 6 September 2006 (CDT)

Salien

I'm not the one who moved the page - Evilkolbot did. I just deleted the leftover redirect. --Quietust 15:37, 9 September 2006 (CDT)

Signature

Basically, here's how it works:

  1. Set your nickname to {{User:SomeStranger/sig2}}. A subst: will get dropped in.
  2. Fill User:SomeStranger/sig2 with {{User:SomeStranger/sig}}.
  3. Fill User:SomeStranger/sig with your signature.

Alternately, you could just do it the exact opposite of what Dehstil does - have your user page contain {{User:SomeStranger/sig}} in an includeonly block, then put your actual sig in the outside page. Dehstil's method is a rather bad idea, since editing his user page will cause tons of talk pages to be regenerated. I personally prefer the method I outlined above, since it doesn't clutter my user page. --Quietust (t|c) 17:35, 25 October 2006 (CDT)

  • I think I'm confused why anyone would need a template/subpage for a signature... what's wrong with just editing the "nickname" part (which ends up being in your sig) on the "User profile" page of your Special:Preferences? Or am I missing something? [Insert note here about the "Raw signatures (without automatic link)" checkbox here] --JRSiebz (|§|) 19:13, 25 October 2006 (CDT)
    • Because they tend to get very long which can be very annoying on a talk page...I don't know...unless it causes a lot of wiki lag I think this is a good idea....--SomeStranger (t|c) 20:02, 25 October 2006 (CDT)
    • Ah, editing my user page does do that...sorry, not too much forethought. I never put anything on my user page anyways though. :P--Dehstil (t|c) 22:33, 25 October 2006 (CDT)
    • On Wikipedia's user signature preferences pages, the following is appended by the "raw signature" checkbox:
      "Raw signature (If unchecked, the contents of the box above will be treated as your nickname and link automatically to your user page; if checked, the contents should be source code, including all links. Don't use templates or external links in your signature)"
      and if you follow the "sign your posts" link, you get to a page which says:
      "Transclusions of templates and parser functions in signatures (like those which appear as {{User:Name/sig}}, for example) are currently impossible, because the developers have determined them to be an unnecessary drain on the servers. (Any template or parser function you enter will be substituted automatically.) Transcluded signatures require extra processing—whenever you change your signature source, all talk pages you have posted on must be re-cached.
      Signature templates are also vandalism targets, and will be forever, even if the user leaves the project. Simple text signatures, which are stored along with the page content, use no more resources than the comments themselves and avoid these problems.
      " That's how wikipedia "does" it ;-) --JRSiebz (|§|) 19:16, 29 October 2006 (CST)
      • So as long as I don't change it everything is fine...I look at it the same was as the plural template. I just find it annoying to have to look at a ton of random signature text in talk pages.--SomeStranger (t|c) 19:37, 29 October 2006 (CST)

Ragamuffin Imp

There was never any request by Asymmetric to not spoil this. There is the self-interest question, so a selfish person would not spoil. However, if a player has acquired one and is generous enough to wish to reveal the mechanism to everyone else, that is their business. I would ask you to remove it entirely, but at least remove the reference to Assymmetric so as not to make them look like arseholes. --Killerrabbit 15:05, 13 July 2007 (CDT)

  • As you probably figured out by my slow response time, I am kind of inactive at the moment. It seems that the other admin got to the problem before it became an issue though. --SomeStranger (t|c) 08:02, 17 July 2007 (CDT)

Useitem

You could probably make it easier by just separating adv and advmin, since they should not be present at the same time :)--Eleron 01:30, 29 January 2009 (UTC)

  • I changed the Test/useitem template back to the previous version - I think that one worked fine but just had not been refreshed yet. Previewing a version of hell ramen using Test/useitem instead of useitem now produces the desired result. Can you push the change to the real version?--Eleron 04:55, 31 January 2009 (UTC)

redirect pages

Hey SomeStranger. I noticed you deleted a redirect page for "Orcish_frat_house_blueprints" and I was wondering what the purpose of this is. Aren't pages like that more helpful than harmful? Just wondering. --Portal7 21:55, 10 December 2011 (CET)
