  You hear a startled "Kweh!" from behind you, and an odd smell. With an aggrieved sign, you stop and clean out the Buddy Bjorn.

  <name> smiles uncomfortably with his wax lips. If anyone asks, "do cocoabos have lips?", now the answer is "yes."

Arena Messages

• When entered in an Obstacle Course:

  <name> is no good at the obstacle course race. Nobody is quite sure why.

Notes

• The Cocoabo acts 1/3 of the time. Until round 10, each of the four actions is equally likely. After round 10, it will attack 50% of the time, heal or confuse 25% of the time, and will not produce meat.
• Healing: The Cocoabo heals between X+6 to X+8 HP and MP, where X is the Cocoabo's weight.
• Damage: The Cocoabo deals X+1 to X+3 damage.
• Confusion: The Cocoabo delevels an opponent by (X+1)/3 and can have a range if weight returns a fractional number.
• Meat: An estimated formula for the meat obtained is A(X+B), where A is a random value from 3 to 5 and B is a random value from 1 to 3. This produces a range of 3X+3 to 5X+15.

  It averages at 4X+8 meat dropped without the effect of limit breaks (see below). Above 16 lbs (accounting for limit breaks) it averages ax+b with a = 5.4 ± 0.1, and b = -8.8 ± 2.6.

• When the Cocoabo gets a LIMIT BREAK!, its action is increased in effectiveness.
  • For healing, the range becomes 2X+7 to 2X+11. (To be more exact, the base rate for the Cocoabo is X+5+1d3. When there is a limit break, the X and 1d3 are doubled, but not the 5. At 20 pounds, the Cocoabo restores 26-28 HP/MP, but 47, 49, or 51 HP/MP on a limit break.)
  • For all other actions, the effectiveness is doubled.
  • LIMIT BREAKs occur when the Cocoabo is 17 pounds or greater about 25% of the time.
• The Ninja Pirate Zombie Robot is a stronger version of the Cocoabo. The only difference is that the NPZR can also stun a foe by pummeling it in the head with a piece of toast (and that all the NPZR's attacks are about twice as effective, except from the meatgain attack, heals and mp restores).
• The Stocking Mimic is another version of the Cocoabo, but with a different weight gain mechanic and with powerful candy drops.
• There exists a stuffed version of this familiar.
• When in the Crown of Thrones, you will get white chocolate chips only once per combat.

References

• This familiar is a chocolatey play on the Chocobo from the Final Fantasy video game series.
• Cocoabos also occasionally have a LIMIT BREAK! These also have their origins in Final Fantasy (specifically, in the seventh installment), as special combat moves. Though really only used in Final Fantasy VII and the American version of Final Fantasy VIII (in Japanese FF8, Limit Breaks were called simply Special Attacks), the term "Limit Break" has become slang for powerful attacks in many RPGs.
• The maypole message mentions the Funky Chicken, a novelty dance invented by Rufus Thomas in 1969. (It also refers to the fact that a Chocobo resembles a chicken).
• The Arena message upon entering a Cocoabo in the obstacle course race is likely a reference to the difficulty of piloting Chocobos in Final Fantasy X minigames. It may also be a reference to the game Chocobo Racing.
• To "Give someone the bird" is to present the middle finger to them, a very rude gesture, though overused.
• The wax lips message is a reference to the proverbial interrogative "Does a chicken have lips?"
