Instructions for a Pleasant Talk Experience
In the interest of keeping discussions in one place:
  • If I posted a note on your talk page with a question or a comment, please post your response on your talk page, then add your signature to the Reply Notification section below (so I know to check for your reply).
  • If you wish to post a comment on my talk page, add it to the top of the Comments section and begin it with a level 3 header (i.e. "===Subject===", 3 equals signs). Any further replies I make will be made on my talk page, so as to keep the conversation in one place.
  • If you want to perform predictable edits on a considerably large number of pages (generally 100 or more) and would like to have my bot do them for you, add a comment to the top of the Bot Requests section and begin it with a level 3 header. As with normal comments, replies will also be posted solely on my talk page.
  • Do not click the "+" button at the top of the page - if you do, your comment will be added as a new section below the Bot Requests section, which probably isn't what you want to do.

Past discussion are archived here: 1, 2, 3, 4.

Reply Notification

If you are here to reply to a message I placed on your user page, stop - place the reply on your own talk page, and then edit this section and add your signature so I know to check it.

Comments

Please place new comments at the top of this section. If you are replying to a message I placed on your user talk page, please place the reply on your talk page and place your signature in the "Reply Notification" section above. To add a comment, simply edit this section and add a new subsection (with three equals signs around the title).

Skills Template

You might want to run the bot to change all the non-passives from effect to explain. The passive skills are all going to eventually get blue text including the ones currently missing it, per Jick.--Toffile 21:28, 25 January 2012 (CET)

  • Currently in progress - as it changes effect->explain, I'm going through and replacing the explain lines with effect lines for skills that actually have them. --Quietust (t|c) 22:06, 25 January 2012 (CET)
    • The bot broke the skill pages that use the acquireEffect template when it went through.--Toffile 03:27, 27 January 2012 (CET)
      • Whoops - should've had it match "^|effect=" rather than just "|effect="; all of the affected pages should be fixed now. --Quietust (t|c) 06:02, 27 January 2012 (CET)

Sortable

Heh. I just had to figure out the issue yesterday on Wikia. I used "sorttable" from this wiki because that was the example I knew, and had to dig to find that Wikia had "sortable" (as in, a table that was sortable), which is apparently the official MediaWiki class name. Think there needs to be a rewrite?

By the way, why not use = for your comments sections instead of ==? --Raijinili 15:17, 24 January 2012 (CET)

  • Apparently, the reason this wiki uses "sorttable" is because "sortable" doesn't work in certain cases - it has trouble with various types of numbers, and it completely breaks if the table uses rowspan or colspan. Unfortunately, we seemingly can't directly replace the builtin "sortable" javascript, so instead we added a duplicate copy that triggered on "sorttable" and modified it to suit our purposes. There's a bunch of old archived discussion here and here with all of the details. --Quietust (t|c) 21:59, 24 January 2012 (CET)

interwiki

i'm seeing red links for the wikipedia interwiki links. clicking the links opens an internal edit page, too. any ideas? --Evilkolbot 23:36, 22 December 2011 (CET)

  • I just had Mag apply some updates to the wiki's database to fix some structural problems (namely, the ones that were preventing characters like "Ō" from working in page names), and it may have broken some other things (in fact, I know that it's broken all of the other pages with special characters in their names, such as Chez Snootee and Pokemanns). Presumably, the interwiki table got broken in the process - I'll see about getting it fixed. --Quietust (t|c) 23:48, 22 December 2011 (CET)
    • The interwiki table just needed to be updated - the contents of the 'prefix' column were capitalized when they should've been in all lowercase. Should be fixed now. --Quietust (t|c) 05:52, 23 December 2011 (CET)

Spam Pages + Deletion

I'll admit that noting Spam pages on TheKolWiki:Pages for deletion is probably overkill, but is there a better way of tagging them? --Doucy 14:17, 23 November 2011 (CET)

  • as Quietust pointed out, spam pages don't need to be tagged, they'll be deleted as soon as someone sees them. in the meantime you can remove the content, remembering to clear the comment box of the deleted text. the current spam appears to be link farming so the less time it's on the wiki the better. --Evilkolbot 16:33, 23 November 2011 (CET)
  • What EKB said. If you find a page that's managed to go undeleted for several days (rarely happens, but there was at least one instance), you can mention it on Thekolwiki:Pages for deletion. --Flargen 22:53, 23 November 2011 (CET)
    • Grand, I'll do that in future then! Thanks for the clarification :) --Doucy 12:30, 24 November 2011 (CET)

Standards update?

Hi Quietust. I'm new to the wiki, and am spading the boot pastes to try and get a more accurate read on the adv & stat gains. I noticed in the "established standards" a bunch of warnings about taking into account moon sign and other factors for foods. Could you guys add a general warning to anyone tabbing stats that ALL moonsigns now have a +10% to a stat regardless of stat days? I only ask because I've noticed some of the paste pages have stat ranges that are approximately 10% beyond the actual range of the items. Thanks! --Lord Kes 12:36, 23 September 2011 (CEST)

Test Template In User Space

Thanks, Quietust! I don't know what you did - I'm still a total newbie when it comes to templates - but you fixed my test template, and for that I am grateful. --Wrldwzrd89 23:43, 4 September 2011 (CEST)

The image at File:Wospicon.gif should be moved to File:Wosp.gif, since that's its name (and it can be found at /adventureimages/wosp.gif). Are you the right person to ask to do this? I could also just make the new page and submit the old one for deletion, but either way, there's something that needs mod action. Thanks! --Southwest 21:57, 15 August 2011 (CEST)

  • For reference, images cannot be renamed on MediaWiki - you have to delete them and reupload them using the correct name, which somebody else appears to have already done. --Quietust (t|c) 02:04, 16 August 2011 (CEST)
    • I learned something new today. Alright, thanks anyway! --Southwest 02:35, 16 August 2011 (CEST)

23/37

I had worded it because as far as the Bureau of Reincarnation and Pearly Gates are concerned, you get 11 karma for rescuing the king, and a bonus 12 or 26 for finishing it with that restriction in place. I was trying to keep the two separate, like they do in game.--Toffile 22:07, 18 May 2011 (UTC)

  • Are the path restriction bonuses actually displayed on separate lines? If so, the Valhalla page should be updated to reflect this, because right now all it has is one line for freeing King Ralph in casual/normal/hardcore and one for discarding instant karma, nothing for the actual path involved. --Quietust (t|c) 01:07, 19 May 2011 (UTC)
    • When you go to the new Bureau of Reincarnation, it itemizes all of the bonuses you'll get. It will give a grand total at the end, but it shows that the pathed rewards and difficulty settings as additional bonuses with a baseline of 11 karma.--Toffile 01:27, 19 May 2011 (UTC)
    • Since I finally reascended, here's how the new Bureau shows all your karma bonuses. http://imgur.com/nQepQ --Toffile 20:18, 24 May 2011 (UTC)

Another "atom" problem to work around

Could you do your work-around magic to create the page and data for Atomic Comic? I'm almost but not quite able to figure out how to get the post data submitted correctly. Closest I can come is that the wiki will say it lost the session data and show a preview of the edit. I don't really want to create "Atmic Comic" or something like that as a workaround, although as long as the "atom" issue remains there's little difference in doing so other than slightly more annoying linking. --Flargen 07:46, 1 April 2011 (UTC)

  • Alright, I figured it out, after /hardcore pointed me to a firefox addon that should let me alter the form, and then I realized that this was a default feature of Opera as of several version numbers ago. Woo! It was still a bit round-about. Opera will auto-convert the %6f to an 'o' when put in the address bar, so had to go to IE first, save page source, attempt to submit edit with that, then alter the form on the resulting error-message preview and submit again. Hooray for triumphs over adversity! --Flargen 08:03, 1 April 2011 (UTC)

General wiki template question

I'm trying to set up some nested templates on another wiki, and I'm using the KoL wiki data pages as my guide. I see you created the category, so I was wondering if you could give me some advice.

Basically, I can't seem to use {{{{FULLPAGENAME}}}} to make a page call itself as a template. KoLwiki uses {{{{FULLPAGENAME}}|format=pagetype/meta}}. I'm not passing a format parameter (I have the relevant template hardcoded into my data page), so when I use{{ActualDataPageName}} on ActualDataPageName it works beautifully. But when I use {{{{FULLPAGENAME}}}} on ActualDataPageName , it just displays, as text "{{{{FULLPAGENAME}}}}".

Does this functionality require special extensions that a stock Mediawiki install doesn't have? I see that it uses some parser extensions, but perusing their pages didn't seem to indicate that they would affect templates like this.

Sorry that this isn't really KoL related. I appreciate your time! --Rocketyam 21:25, 24 March 2011 (UTC)

  • Try using {{{{FULLPAGENAME}}|}} - 3 curly-braces make the wiki engine think it's dealing with a parameter rather than a template transclusion. --Quietust (t|c) 00:09, 25 March 2011 (UTC)
    • Doh! That was exactly the problem. Thanks a lot! The help is very much appreciated! --Rocketyam 13:42, 25 March 2011 (UTC)

Only took about 4 months

  • I was wondering when someone noticed the museum typo I made.--Toffile 00:04, 19 March 2011 (UTC)

Knob Goblin Image Changes

I don't know when it happened, I saw no announcement, but the in-game artwork for the knob goblins appears to have changed. Someone mentioned it in chat last week and I only now getting to make question of it. It seems like the whole area got new monster art? For example, the [Knob Goblin Very Mad Scientist]

Old Image: http://images.kingdomofloathing.com/adventureimages/knobsci2.gif New Image: http://images.kingdomofloathing.com/adventureimages/kg_verymadsci.gif I don't know how to correctly upload/change/link images. Or even if the change is significant enough to be noted in a history log somewhere? --Plater (t|c) 14:14, 15 February 2011 (UTC)

  • I have noticed other people here slowly replacing the images with new ones over the past couple of weeks. I think the last radio show had some comments about trying to make line width more consistent in game images. The people doing the updates of the images know how to add a history section, so I guess the artwork swap hasn't been deemed important enough by them. Personally, I'd like to see how images have changed over the years somewhere. --Club (#66669) (Talk) 18:19, 15 February 2011 (UTC)
    • You could just look at the history of the data pages and the image pages (in case the new image has the same name, such as manor.gif). --Flargen 19:12, 15 February 2011 (UTC)

Plural Monsters / Area of Effect

I've been thumping my head into a wall trying to find any definitive guidelines on how to handle this info on the wiki, or where to find it. What little I've found seems to be quite scattered and not at all standardized. Sorry to post here, but I don't know where else to go, and would really appreciate making said info more visible / easier to track. If this isn't a good place to discuss it, please point me towards some place better. (I really have tried searching, I swear.) --StDoodle 01:45, 18 January 2011 (UTC)

Randomizing part

Seems to work to me: {{Test2}}. Perhaps you hadn't purged? Or got bad luck? --Flargen 22:06, 13 December 2010 (UTC)

  • Try using it more than once on the same page. --Quietust (t|c) 22:07, 13 December 2010 (UTC)
    • It was used 3 times there and was working fine. But your change to the examples shows it will only give a new part if you throw in different inputs. Curious. Didn't realize it would do that. --Flargen 22:09, 13 December 2010 (UTC)
      • And what you just did is even more amusing. So we could make {{part}} into a wrapper for some other template, with part just throwing in a dummy input. Go figure! --Flargen 22:12, 13 December 2010 (UTC)

Item Obtained From

I mentioned here that we seem to have accidentally standardized on a formatting error. Would it be possible to have your bot go through and fix this? Here is an example of switching from incorrect to correct formatting. Thanks!--Starwed 16:42, 17 December 2010 (UTC)

Any thoughts on this? --Starwed 19:10, 9 January 2011 (UTC)
I have a feeling it would be rather tricky to automatically locate this sort of formatting, and that it'd be even trickier to automatically fix it. Besides, the main issue is finding all of the affected pages, and a bot won't help with that unless I tell it to check every single item page. --Quietust (t|c) 14:04, 10 January 2011 (UTC)
If it's going to be fixed, all item pages will need to be checked anyway, so it seems worthwhile to have a bot do it. If it's just not worth fixing I'll grit my teeth and live with it.  :) --Starwed 15:37, 11 January 2011 (UTC)

Familiar Equipment

Could you get Quitebot to change all the "Every 10th win with a <Familiar> equipped (Sometimes)" to "Every 5th win with a <Familiar> equipped (Sometimes)"--Icon315♕ (|) 23:13, 3 February 2011 (UTC)

I think it's also now automatic, right? (The announcement included no longer has a chance to give lead necklaces when it could give better prizes instead.) So the (Sometimes) needs to go. --Starwed 01:48, 4 February 2011 (UTC)

Image vs File namespace

Just FYI, with the version of Mediawiki we've been upgraded to, the "Image" namespace was renamed to "File", and the MW documentation recommends converting links from one to the other in case "Image" is deprecated down the road. -- sulfur 19:16, 3 August 2011 (CEST)
