Opossum/Blender

I think we should start collecting opossum/blender data for every food. The range of adventures gained is shifted when under either of those zodiac signs, and the wiki should show this fact. Currently the wiki policy is to throw out all opossum/blender data, but I think we're much better off if it's collected.--QuantumNightmare 00:21, 24 October 2007 (CDT)

  • What exactly would be the point of doing it for every food/booze item? Why not just spade it properly and determine how many extra adventures are given, like what is done for Got Milk and Ode to Booze?
    • Because that's not how opossum/blender work. Milk/ode give a bonus to adventures based on your adventure gain, which is a simple spade-able formula. Opossum/blender change the Quality of a food and in doing so changes the range of adventure gains in a very unpredictable fashion - one that depends both on the non-opossum'd adventure range, the # of adventures received, as well as a Jick factor here and there. In an ideal world we could find out the default Qualities of every food and then list an equation of how these qualities are effected by opossum/blender (and how the adventure range is effected by quality), but we have no way of spading that data.--QuantumNightmare 08:29, 24 October 2007 (CDT)
      • I think we can find a middle way: not by giving a formula, but by giving a range for every food/booze, but on the appropriate zodiac-sign page. This way, we can show the effect, without too much spam (it's an effect of the player, not of the food/booze). Another remark: I guess not only the range, but also the distribution is important. My two cents, --Mercantilia 09:10, 24 October 2007 (CDT)
        • I'm open to finding a middle ground. But the information should be available somewhere, without requireing a math degree to understand. For instance: hi mein have a quality of ~9, changed to ~10 with opossum. Opossum adventure gain is then (fullness) to (Quality*Fullness), or 5-50. This is then averaged to 27.5 +/-3.5, to give 24-31 adventures. This has all been spaded out, but how should this information be posted on the wiki? I think the simplest is simply to have spades do the math, and print out that the adventure gain with opossum is higher - no need to go into the little details.--QuantumNightmare 13:50, 24 October 2007 (CDT)

Redirects

Am I allowed to edit others' user pages if to correct redirects, etc.? I'm just wondering, because a lot of people have links to Chat which is now a redirect page to Chat Guide: Basics, and they probably meant to link to Chat Guide: Channels. --CG1:t,c,e 19:54, 12 October 2007 (CDT)

  • For the purposes of fixing links to redirects, it should be acceptable - just make sure the appearance of the page is unmodified (i.e. add alt-text where appropriate). --Quietust (t|c) 19:59, 12 October 2007 (CDT)

Hung-Over half-orc hobo

This page needs its references cleaned/adjusted. The Drunk Driving link is a non sequitur, and the example is obscure. --DiscoNeckTed 09:57, 12 October 2007 (CDT)

Rock pops

Sorry, I copy/pasted, I apologize -- I've never updated this wiki, so when I ran across something that didn't turn up quickly on search, I thought I'd note it for others. (Not a gripe, you did the right thing, just watned to say I'm sorry) PastaPirate 00:08, 9 October 2007 (CDT)

Sauceror potions

So, with Impetuous Sauciness current class Saucerors get 15 adventures from their potions. How should this be reflected in the relevent item and skill pages? Is it correct to list the durations as 5/10/15 now? --CheezyBob 19:23, 30 September 2007 (CDT)

Signature

I see some people's, such as your own, signature having the (t|c) thing after it, and your user page is (name)/sig How is that done? Do you type it manually and not use the signature button thing? --Plater 07:03, 1 September 2007 (CDT)

Redirects

What is the policy for making redirect pages? I find it annoying that the wiki will take me to a search page if I don't capitalize exactly corrrect. I would like to add redirects from from uncapitilized pages to the capitilized ones. Is this OK? --CheezyBob 20:10, 15 August 2007 (CDT)

  • Unofficial policy on capitalization redirects is pretty much to only create them when specifying the page name entirely in lowercase using the Search function does not lead to the destination - creating redirects for incorrectly capitalized page names (i.e. not all lowercase) serves only to be a waste of space. In other words, what you're suggesting should be fine. --Quietust (t|c) 23:41, 15 August 2007 (CDT)

Trademark symbols messing up RSS feeds?

I've noticed there seem to be issues with the collections for Lockenstock™ sandals and Genalen™ Bottle; the issue being that no rss feed is found. I've tried playing around with the genalen's entry to see if other things would work, but haven't met with any success. The jickenwings site has entries for these, though getting to them requires you to stop just short of the trademark when searching. I'm not particularly well-versed on how the wiki and these RSS feeds interact, but is this an issue that can be fixed on the wiki end or would it have to be adjusted on jickenwings? Or something else entirely? --Flargen 00:11, 22 July 2007 (CDT)

  • Several other items are adjusted to work properly, such as "Item #13" and the "Mr. Eh?". It would appear that these will need to be adjusted as well, though I don't know how to get that done. --Quietust (t|c) 00:12, 22 July 2007 (CDT)

Cup'o primative beer comment

You said:

What is with people and doing "?-x-y-?"? It's ugly, and it's pointless, since if they turn out to be wrong, somebody can just come along and update the range either way.

This was pretty useful when NS13 had just hit, since it indicated that the range hadn't been spaded out yet, and was a more direct invitation to edit the page. But I'd agree that the format shouldn't appear on anything which has been out long enough for the range to be a good representation. --Starwed 13:16, 20 July 2007 (CDT)

Trophy #s

How do you find trophy #s? --CG1:t,c,e 18:30, 13 July 2007 (CDT)

  • If you're qualified to buy the trophy, you can view the page source at the Trophy Hut and look at the radio button for selecting which one to buy. If you already have it, then view the page source for the Trophy Case and look at the checkbox for making the trophy visible in your profile. --Quietust (t|c) 19:38, 13 July 2007 (CDT)

Spoilers

Hey, I was wondering if, as a wiki admin, you could remove some of the edit history for the Pile of smoking rags. Lookit the page and maybe you'll see why? I also asked TechSmurf. --Unnatural20 03:52, 12 July 2007 (CDT)

  • It's been done. --Quietust (t|c) 15:49, 13 July 2007 (CDT)
  • Thank you for the hint on Talk:Ragamuffin_Imp. I don't know if you did it on purpose, but it helped me figure out the text. --Qbzzt 09:23, 18 July 2007 (CDT)
    • Er, that wasn't intended to be a hint. --Quietust (t|c) 09:30, 18 July 2007 (CDT)

Odd Font Issues

I've been noticing lately that some of the wiki pages are loading with too-large fonts in various sections of the page. A refresh fixes them, typically, and they aren't constant or consistent by any means, but I've never noticed this phenomenon before. Should we be concerned at all, or is it most likely a fluke on my end?--Dorf (t|c) 00:35, 11 July 2007 (CDT)

  • It's a bug of some sort with the Item Collections stuff - it's running into a problem and spitting out an error message in the middle of the HTML headers, resulting in a bunch of the stylesheet information being invalidated and throwing Firefox into quirks mode (and something similar for other browsers). In order to fix this, Mag or Clackling will need to be explained the exact nature of the problem (which I can probably determine given 5 minutes or so of time). Also, please do not remove discussions from my talk page - I will archive them off as I find it necessary. --Quietust (t|c) 08:25, 11 July 2007 (CDT)
    • Okay, good to know. And sorry about the discussion removal; I didn't assume they were important as they were ones in which only you and I contributed (and were pretty minor/aesthetic issues), but I'll stay hands-off from now on.--Dorf (t|c) 11:47, 11 July 2007 (CDT)

Page getting too big (template limit hit?)

The page for The Battlefield seems to have passed the limit for the number of times the combat template can be used, resulting in entries not being displayed and broken combat links appearing on the bottom of the page. There are still combats (and technically one-time non-combats) missing from the entry's source, too. That or something else is happening, and I'm not sure what. Can such a limit be increased, or do we need to split the page into 2 pieces, one for each faction? --Flargen 16:14, 6 July 2007 (CDT)

  • I noticed that as well, and couldn't find a way around it. It may well be necessary to split the page in half - it's got way too much in it already. --Quietust (t|c) 16:15, 6 July 2007 (CDT)
  • I'd say we should split it by faction as well. Unless someone else is already working on this, I'll take a quick stab at it.--Dorf (t|c) 16:21, 6 July 2007 (CDT)

Omitting Unnecessary Fields in the Adventure Template

I don't know enough (well, anything) about templates to do this on my own, but is there some way unnecessary fields could be left out of the adventure template? Like, for noncombat adventures that just drop an item, leaving out the meat and substat fields instead of having to put in none/0? It would make the template look a lot cleaner. (I moved this from the template talk to where you'd actually see it. ;) ) --TechSmurf 20:59, 5 July 2007 (CDT)

  • Yes, there is a way. However, I'm rather tired from all of the editing I've just done, so I'll get back to you in a few days or so. *pant* *wheeze* --Quietust (t|c) 21:32, 5 July 2007 (CDT)
    • Haha, fair enough. Thanks.--TechSmurf 21:35, 5 July 2007 (CDT)
    • I just took a crack at teaching myself templates, and it looks like I pulled it off. Woohoo. Does it need anything else, or can it be applied to the adventure template? --TechSmurf 14:58, 11 July 2007 (CDT)
      • I had no doubt that it would work - the question is whether or not we want to go through and clear out all 'unused' fields from the existing location pages or simply finalize {{test/adventure}} and use it instead. --Quietust (t|c) 15:08, 11 July 2007 (CDT)
        • It wasn't working that I was worried about, it was that I had no understanding of template syntax. ;) Anyway, I'd be willing to go through and clean up all the preexisting adventure templates. --TechSmurf 19:31, 11 July 2007 (CDT)

Effect ID

Can you tell me how to find an effect's ID (besides the soft echo whatever way)? --CG1:t,c,e 19:38, 5 July 2007 (CDT)

  • That's the only way to find it now (aside from the "shrug off" link for buffs, but you can SGEEA those anyways). --Quietust (t|c) 19:40, 5 July 2007 (CDT)
    • Can you think of anything else? (Otherwise, it would be impossible to find the ID for Soul Freeze, Burning Soul, etc. --CG1:t,c,e 19:46, 5 July 2007 (CDT)
      • Nope, and it would mean that it is indeed impossible to determine the IDs for those effects, unless we can bribe Jick into telling us what they are. --Quietust (t|c) 19:48, 5 July 2007 (CDT)
        • I forgot how to find effect IDs. I had "how to find it" bookmarked but now I can't find it... can you show me again? --CG1:t,c,e 21:57, 6 July 2007 (CDT)
          • Just use a soft green echo eyedrop antidote, then view the frame source for the page. Each effect has a radio button - grab the value="N" corresponding to the effect you want. --Quietust (t|c) 23:16, 6 July 2007 (CDT)
        • Upon further thought, I've realized that it is possible to determine the effect ID for 1-adventure effects granted during combat - get the effect, then use a tattered scrap of paper to end combat without consuming the adventure, then use the SGEEA trick to get the effect ID. --Quietust (t|c) 01:01, 7 July 2007 (CDT)

BHH Needs Images

...however, I don't quite understand what is going on inside {{plural}} to be able to extract what I want into a new {{InlinePlural}} and/or {{ListPlural}} for use in the "Items Requested" section. The important thing, to me, is to not have the entire link become "UNKNOWN" if the data page for a new bounty item hasn't been filled in yet. Is this what the mysterious "argument 2" of Plural does? On the other hand, once the items start repeating, this concern will rarely or never occur again, so maybe it's not worth it. If you understand the magic and would like to take this on, I'd love to see it. --Jonrock 00:07, 27 June 2007 (CDT)

  • No, the second argument of {{plural}} is a number to override it to the singular form of the item. As for displaying UNKNOWN, that only happens if the "Plural" field has been entirely omitted from the data page (which should never happen unless people deliberately avoid clicking the convenient "Create metadata" link) - if the data page itself is absent, then you end up with broken-looking template stuff (which you could avoid by doing {{#ifexist:Data:itemname|(everything)|(case for no data page present)}}. --Quietust (t|c) 00:13, 27 June 2007 (CDT)
    • OK, excellent little tutorial, thanks! I will attempt that later this evening, I think, if nobody else has gotten to it first. --Jonrock 00:18, 27 June 2007 (CDT)

Stone sphere when used

Hey, I created a page called Stone sphere When Used section, for transclusion into the stone sphere pages. You deleted it with the comment "we already have this." Where? It would be nice to have a single editable copy of this information, and the deletion left a broken link on the pages which were using it. (Rough stone sphere, for instance.) If you think this seems like a bad idea, I don't especially oppose, but wanted to check that you saw how the page was being used. --Starwed 21:40, 4 July 2007 (CDT)

  • Whoops. Apparently, MediaWiki decided that the page wasn't being used, since it was showing up in Orphaned Pages (which I was cleaning out earlier). I'm not entirely certain how we should handle this, but since it's only 4 pages I don't know if it's necessary to resort to transclusion. --Quietust (t|c) 21:58, 4 July 2007 (CDT)

Complaint

I'm a new, inexperienced wiki user who was trying to help others by adding a chart to a page. I asked for help from more experienced users, and this is what you sent me:

TheKolWiki is not meant to be an image hosting service, especially when the image you're trying to host is well over a megabyte long. If you want to put an image on the wiki, please upload it to ImageShack (or equivalent). In this case, though, it would have been far better to simply convert the table to text and place it in an appropriate location. --Quietust (t|c) 17:22, 17 June 2007 (CDT)

The "admin" title has clearly gone to your head. If I knew that 1) a MB is evidently a big deal in the wiki world and/or 2) how to "convert the table to text" properly (tried but it didn't work - hence me ASKING FOR HELP), I wouldn't have had problems, would I? You may have great computer skills but are a total jackass to those you're supposed to be helping. I hope your peers see this and get a glimpse of the type of person they "promoted" - abrasive and with little to no experience in dealing with people. --The preceding unsigned comment was added by Deli guy

  • I highly encourage you to take this issue to one of the other admins, where they will likely reach the same conclusion I did. The fact of the matter is that the image you wished to add to the page would have caused the page to become more or less unusable, both due to increasing the load time by several orders of magnitude and by causing excessive vertical scrolling, and also would have resulted in severe additional load on Coldfront's network connection. Also, I'm curious to know how my comment constitutes jackassery - I merely indicated what you should not have done (which new editors are bound to do) and concisely pointed out what should have been done. --Quietust (t|c) 15:15, 29 June 2007 (CDT)

What problem are/do you [keep] having with [reverting/deleting] image:knight.gif? It looks fine to me. Orig version with sword held wrong, then the revised version with appropriate sword holding. I dunno. --JRSiebz (|§|) 20:37, 24 June 2007 (CDT)

  • Other people keep clicking the "rev" link, presumably thinking it will compare the image to the previous revision, and instead end up reverting it (and then reverting it back again afterwards). All I'm doing is deleting the intermediate revisions (which serve no purpose other than to waste disk space on the server). --Quietust (t|c) 20:48, 24 June 2007 (CDT)

Reversion and deletion

How do I revert a page to a previous edit, and, if I even have the ability, how do I delete a page? --TechSmurf 12:27, 8 June 2007 (CDT)

  • For reverting edits, the best you can do is to use the "Undo" link when viewing differences between two revisions of a page - MediaWiki will attempt to undo that specific edit, allowing you to specify a reason. Sysops get a special "Revert" link which undoes all of the most recent consecutive edits by a specific user (i.e. if a page is edited by C, A, A, A, A, B, A, A, A, A, then Undo will revert only 4 edits, not 8) with an automatically generated reason. Only sysops can delete pages from the wiki, so you'll have to settle with flagging them for deletion. --Quietust (t|c) 12:33, 8 June 2007 (CDT)

admin stuff

if i have a question about admin stuff, is this a good place for it, or should we take it somewhere more, um, private? --Evilkolbot 17:57, 23 May 2007 (CDT)

  • Here is usually fine, unless there's some sort of "sensitive information" involved, in which case K-mail will probably suffice. --Quietust (t|c) 18:34, 23 May 2007 (CDT)
    • spambot idiocy prompts me to move all my bits, so here goes.
      1. is there a policy on how long someone is banned for? i would have banned wwwzhudan permanently but wasn't sure what i should do. is it ok to permaban obvious spambots? what would be a reasonable punishment for a first offence of jackassery? obvious twelve-ness? i understand that rules make lawyers, but ballpark figures, or, even better, precedent, would be much appreciated.
      2. i noticed that when i failed to spot the hoax item (plushy hunky doodle or something) you cleaned up the recent changes page. is this something we can all do?
    • many thanks, --Evilkolbot 16:08, 11 June 2007 (CDT)
      • If you see a blatant spammer, feel free to permban it on sight. As for vandalism, the general procedure is to warn them on the first instance, then temp block them for a while if they keep it up - anywhere from 1 day to 1 week (depending on how persistent they are and any rude replies). If they resume vandalism when the block expires, it's generally safe to make it infinite. As for inappropriately created pages (such as the "stuffed dreidl" or "Dr. Invertebrate" hoaxes), by all means delete them - one of the most important things you gain from the Sysop rank is the ability to delete pages (as well as the ability to protect them). --Quietust (t|c) 16:25, 11 June 2007 (CDT)
        • it's not the deleting of pages i'm asking about. you cleaned up the horrible mess that was the Special:Recentchanges page by removing offending edits. is that something that requires extra privileges? --Evilkolbot 17:03, 11 June 2007 (CDT)
          • Deleting a page also removes all of its entries from Recent Changes, and restoring the page does not put them back. This can also be a convenient side effect of removing individual edits from a page's edit history (by deleting the page and then restoring the relevant revisions). --Quietust (t|c) 18:42, 11 June 2007 (CDT)

Sig Templates

Hi, I'm trying to figure out how to use a signature template in the same way you do. It's easy enough to create that template, but I'm not sure of how to use it without having to manually input {{User:Dorf/sig}} time, date, etc. Can you help me out? Thanks!--Dorf (Talk | Contribs) 03:52, 13 May 2007 (CDT)

  • Here's how you do it:
    1. Create a page 'username/sig' and put your signature in it.
    2. Create an additional page 'username/sig2' and put {{username/sig}} in it.
    3. In your user profile, set your signature to be {{username/sig2}} - it will be changed into {{subst:username/sig2}}, which will give you the result you want.
A note, however: every time you edit 'username/sig' to change your signature, it will place significant additional load on the wiki as it updates every talk page you have signed in order to update them with your new signature. It is also highly susceptible to vandalism, as your signature will become editable by all users; Administrators can protect their signatures from being edited (and this is why Admins are not discouraged from using this type of sig), but this option is not available to ordinary users. --Quietust (t|c) 11:44, 13 May 2007 (CDT)

Deletion Request

Came across an old, unnecessary discussion page at [[Talk:Moonshine martini]]. Should it be deleted?--Dorf (Talk | Contribs) 12:41, 10 May 2007 (CDT)

  • 1. Put your comments up here, rather than at the bottom of the page where I won't see them.
    2. Actually link to the page you want me to delete, so I can readily browse to it and delete it.
    3. It's deleted. --Quietust (t|c) 15:13, 10 May 2007 (CDT)
    • Sorry, saw your note about wanting things at the "bottom" (of this section) and took that a bit too liberally. The reason I didn't link the page is because I was spending time getting RID of links that went nowhere, and didn't want to add another. And thanks. :) --Dorf (Talk | Contribs) 21:03, 10 May 2007 (CDT)

Old Bot Requests

Combat Effects

How difficult would it be for the bot to add the data for the various combat effects from items to the appropriate /data pages? See Talk:Combat items by function for some background. Thanks. --Gymnosophist 16:02, 10 November 2006 (CST)

  • Before running your bot to implement /data pages for effects, can we first continue/resolve the discussion of how to link a page to it's /data page? Let's solve existing problems before going on to create new ones. --Gymnosophist 02:05, 18 November 2006 (CST)
    • Technically, this isn't creating a new problem - whatever method we use to link item pages to their /data pages can be used in the exact same way for effect pages. --Quietust (t|c) 12:50, 18 November 2006 (CST)

Data Namespace

Any progress on the data namespace? I missed what happened that first Wednesday this month.--Dehstil (t|c) 17:19, 18 December 2006 (CST)

  • I wasn't able to attend either (Wednesday evenings are almost always busy for me), so I'm not aware of anything that was done to resolve this. --Quietust (t|c) 18:37, 18 December 2006 (CST)
  • All data pages (that I am aware of) have been moved into the Data: namespace. All that remains now is to delete the leftover redirects (which will happen once wiki bots are granted Delete privileges). --Quietust (t|c) 11:56, 9 January 2007 (CST)
    • All /data [redirect] pages have been deleted (and have been for a while). --Quietust (t|c) 00:19, 14 February 2007 (CST)

Location Data Pages

How easy would it be to have the bot copy data from the location page infoboxes into Data pages? (As I've done by hand at Data:The Crimborg Collective Factory.) And is it fairly trivial to add new data to already existing Data pages with the bot? --Starwed 23:00, 14 March 2007 (CDT)

  • Not too difficult - I'd just need a full list of location pages (or a category containing all of them), the exact format of information coming from the location page, and the exact format of information going into the data page. The rest would basically involve putting together a few regular expressions to extract the location info, move it into the data page, and then fix the location page to refer to the data page. Once the data pages are already created, adding more information wouldn't be too difficult, as long as I can get a table of area names and fields/values to add. --Quietust (t|c) 23:14, 14 March 2007 (CDT)
    • All desired pages are listed under Category:Locations, although there are several pages in that category which aren't relevant. I can put together a precise list if that's needed.
      • The input would be the data inside the infobox template call on each location page, which has the form {{INFOBOX_Location data }}. Any page without one can be ignored. The content of the data page should then be: <includeonly>{{ {{{format}}} data }}</includeonly><noinclude> {{{{FULLPAGENAME}}|format=Location/meta}}</noinclude> Thanks for the help! (And if there's anything else I can do to make this easier, let me know.) --Starwed 00:32, 15 March 2007 (CDT)
        • The data transfer is now in progress - I've tested it with a few adventure pages, and it seems to working so far. --Quietust (t|c) 20:14, 15 March 2007 (CDT)
        • ...and it's done! Cursory inspection of the affected location pages seems to indicate that everything worked properly. --Quietust (t|c) 20:50, 15 March 2007 (CDT)
          • Thanks! But... I forgot about the dual location special case. (D'oh!) The procedure is identical, except that the infobox template name is INFOBOX_DualLocation instead of INFOBOX_Location, and there's extra data on the page. Of course, the Location/meta template should probably be rewritten to check whether there's dual location data present, and if so, display that as well. Either that or we completely separate the concept of locations and dual locations, but I dislike the idea of that. --Starwed 23:31, 15 March 2007 (CDT)
            • INFOBOX_DualLocation is only used on 6 pages - whatever you decide on using for those can be done manually easily enough. --Quietust (t|c) 07:32, 16 March 2007 (CDT)
              • Fair enough, although I can't make any changes to {{Location/meta}}. --Starwed 00:35, 17 March 2007 (CDT)
                • Sure you can - I never actually protected the page (putting the "This page is protected" template doesn't actually protect the page - one of us Admins has to do that by hand; the template is just a formality). --Quietust (t|c) 00:54, 17 March 2007 (CDT)
                  • That'll teach me to believe everything I read on the internet. :) Thanks again for your help. (And sorry for rather cluttering your talk page w/ a single request.) --Starwed 01:34, 18 March 2007 (CDT)

Ever since the HCO forums domain got fubared, there are a lot of dead links floating around. Many of them have been replaced by hand, but it might be good to simply have a bot do a global search and replace of forums.hardcoreoxygenation.com to forums.jick-nerfed.us. --Starwed 13:18, 29 May 2007 (CDT)

  • I'll see what I can do. --Quietust (t|c) 14:01, 29 May 2007 (CDT)
    • I don't know if you have Discussion watched, but the problem seems to have been resolved. --Bagatelle 19:25, 29 May 2007 (CDT)

Monster Level Formula

I just saw a user editing the stat gain for the valley, taking into account the new ML formula of stats=ML/4 instead of ML/5. Can a bot adjust the stat gains for every other area in the game?--QuantumNightmare 11:30, 8 July 2007 (CDT)

  • That would be problematic, as some pages may have already been updated, and it's also possible that some monster levels have been changed. A more feasible method would be to proceed with Combat Data pages - get up-to-date data from the appropriate spading communities, create the data pages, and then have the {{Combat}} template (used on location summary pages) load information from the data page instead of specifying it inline. --Quietust (t|c) 15:49, 13 July 2007 (CDT)
