With the introduction of the August 2011 Familiar of the Month, Pair of Stomping Boots, came a method of categorizing monsters. Most monsters in the kingdom have a classification equivalent to a phylum. These categories are:

The name "phylum", and the phylum names used on the wiki, were devised by the players. In the April 26, 2013 update to Monster Manuel (adding monster type to the combat display), Jick announced that the official term is "category". The category names used by Manuel are the official terms used by Asymmetric staff. Some of these names differ from those chosen by the player base:
