With the introduction of the August 2011 Familiar of the Month, Pair of Stomping Boots, came a method of categorizing monsters. Most monsters in the kingdom have a classification equivalent to a phylum. These categories are:
The name "phylum", and the phylum names used on the wiki, were devised by the players. In the April 26, 2013 update to Monster Manuel (adding monster type to the combat display), Jick announced that the official term is "category". The category names used by Manuel are the official terms used by Asymmetric staff. Some of these names differ from those chosen by the player base:

Monster types are used for the following things:
- A Pair of Stomping Boots can stomp monsters into fine paste based on monster type.
- A Happy Medium can Siphon Spirits of a monster and make spirits (drink) based on their monster type.
- An Artistic Goth Kid will generate free combats based on the type of monster last fought.
Certain items and skills have special effects only on specific monster types:
- Feeding using the plastic vampire fangs will hypnotize humanoids.
- Torment Plant does physical damage to plants.
- bobcat grenades tear beasts to shreds.
- 4:20 bombs annihilate hippies.
- boxes of hammers destroy objects.
- boozebombs take care of orcs.
- holy bombs, batman obliterate the undead.
- Infectious Bite cannot zombify certain monster types (and these types also do not drop brains during Zombie Slayer runs).
