With the introduction of the August 2011 Item of the Month, the Pair of Stomping Boots, came a method of categorizing monsters. Most monsters in the Kingdom have a classification equivalent to that of a phylum (a.k.a. category). They are:

The name "phylum" and the phylum names used on the wiki were devised by the players. In the April 26, 2013, update to Monster Manuel (which added monster types to the combat display), Jick announced that the official term is "category". The names used by the Manuel are the official terms used by the Asymmetric staff.
