smoking talon
smoking talon

This is a talon that must have fallen off of a bat out of hell. Or, possibly, it's all that remains of a bat who was flying out of hell not quite as fast as a bat out of hell ought to fly. There's definitely something otherworldly about it, and something batty, too.

When Used

You put on your smoking jacket and grip the smoking talon tightly. Then you shout, "Ow, Ampersand Exclamation Point Hash At Symbol!" and settle for tossing the white-hot talon from hand to hand. You concentrate to overcome the pain and send your consciousness on a journey through the astral realms.

After a brief burst of psychedelic color, your third eye perceives that your astral body is standing in a vast dark cave full of rustling and squeaking.

"Um, is anybody there? Er, is there any other mind here?" you ask. The rustling noises get louder, and turn into flapping noises, and the swirling dark around you is alive with squeaking.

"I was just wondering if any mind here would be interested in being vested into a new corporeal form," you say, but you still hear only squeaking and flapping. "Please," you say, "if you want to be reincarnated, give me a sign!"

Something huge and dark flaps above your head, its leathery wings creaking. There's a distasteful grunting noise, and then a splatter of something entirely disgusting landing all over your noncorporeal form.

"Ugh. I'll take that guano as a yes? You'll need a name. Let's call you..." You glance around, hoping for some inspiration. "How about... <name>

Notes

References

  • The "Ampersand Exclamation Point Hash At Symbol" part of the description refers to an old method used by comic strips and other written media to signify that someone is cursing, without actually showing the inappropriate language (though it would be written &!#@, not as words). The video game character Q*bert in particular is known for this.
  • In the PC video game Sam & Max Hit the Road, the eponymous characters meet a foul-mouthed man, and one of the conversation options with him involves them saying things like "Ampersand Exclamation Point Hash At Symbol." When the man asks what they're doing, they respond "swearing in longhand."
