vial of holy water
This is a little glass bottle of water, which you assume to be holy, because it has a cross on it. You can throw it at monsters to set them on fire, even if the monster is something not inherently evil, like a wolf. So I guess the question is not how do you know it's holy, but how do you know it's water?
