*The flash backs are because you've taken the mushrooms at least once. Since the mushrooms are based on LSD, you can get flash backs. My guess is that more mushrooms either don't help and it's a simple taken-or-not taken character state, or less likely that there is a cap to how much they help. They can't increase flashback infinitely because the flashbacks can skip over ascensions (have a violet fog adventure every other turn wouldn't be very fun).
