The dunce cap refers to the object of the same name in NetHack. There are two helmets represented by a blue [, namely the dunce cap and the cornuthaum. The cornuthaum is a very useful item for wizards, whereas dunce caps will lower stats and become cursed when worn. Additionally, the cornuthaum acts in the same way as a dunce cap for non-wizards.
