- "Laying bricks" can apparently refer to two separate activities.
- The Edgar Allen Poe short story "The Cask of Amontillado" ends with a man being bricked up, alive, inside a wall. Adventures with the same theme can be found in the Tavern cellar and the Worm Wood.
