It's a Place Where Books Are Free

The corridor leads to an old, dusty library or study, which appears to be free of enemies. There's a large bookshelf occupying the whole of one wall, facing a stone fireplace with two brass candlesticks mounted on the wall above it, but otherwise the room is empty of furniture or exits.

You turn and look back down the hall, puzzled -- this appears to be a dead end, but you didn't pass any branches on the way here. There must be a secret door somewhere, you reason.

Check the bookshelves

You run your eyes across the spines of the books, and find one titled "Secret Passages, a DIY Guide". As you tilt it forward, the bookcase makes a loud click and slides out of the way, revealing a secret door! How unexpected! (Not really.)

The secret passage twists and turns, but fortunately there aren't any branches to get lost in. Soon, it opens up, and you know you've passed into <Next Level>.

...You aren't quite sure how you know that. There isn't a sign or anything. But still.

or, if this is the wrong choice

You examine the titles on display, but nothing stands out to you. None of the books seem less dusty than any others, either. Eventually you start just taking them all off the shelf one by one. Nothing happens; it's just a bookcase.

Grumbling, you turn and stomp back down the hallway, figuring you must have missed a turn somewhere.

Move the candlesticks

You give one of the wall-mounted candlesticks a twist, and unsurprisingly it swivels on its bracket. A section of the wood paneling slides away, revealing a dark corridor. You give yourself a mental high-five.

You tug on one of the candlesticks, but it seems to be firmly attached. You move to the other one and give it a twist, and it rotates excitingly on its bracket -- and pops off. One of the screws falls to the floor with a click, and nothing else happens. Dammit.

Scowling, you head back back down the hall to see if you missed a side-passage somewhere.

Search the fireplace

Crouching to examine the fireplace, you soon find a brick that's a slightly different color than the others. You give it a push, and it slides back with a click, and the rear wall of the fireplace rotates to reveal a secret passage. You crawl through, feeling pretty satisfied with yourself, and find yourself in a low tunnel.

You crouch to examine the fireplace, and push a brick that's a slightly different color than the others. Nothing happens, so you try to pull on it, or twist it, but that doesn't work either, so you start methodically pushing on every brick in turn. After several minutes, you've gained nothing except a lot of soot all over your hands and clothes.

Grumbling, you brush yourself off and head back out of the library to see if you missed something in the hallway.
