- A "potato cannon" which is a "weapon of mass destruction" is a reference to a Spud gun, a device typically made using PVC pipe and using flammable gas and an igniter to launch potatoes.
- "It doesn't make a hole perpendicular to anything" is a reference to the They Might Be Giants song Ana Ng, which contains the line "Make a hole with a gun perpendicular / to the name of this town in a desktop globe".
- "Potahto" is a reference to the George and Ira Gershwin song Let's Call the Whole Thing Off, sung by Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers in the 1937 film Shall We Dance.
- Potato bug is a common nickname used in the United States to refer to one of two different bugs: either the Jerusalem cricket or the woodlouse.
