Sphinx For the Memories
You arrive at a large stone wall set with an iron portcullis, guarded by a monstrously large <animal> with a human face. The creature regards you coolly, then says "So, adventurer. You wish to enter <next level>?"
"Yeah, I guess so?" you reply. "It doesn't sound like a great place, but I'm supposed to stop <Final Boss> from doing something or other?"
"Very well," the creature says, yawning. "I will open the gate and permit you to pass, if you can solve my riddle."
"Is it the one about the legs? It's a man."
"No, don't be ridiculous."
You shrug. "Okay, shoot."

What am I?"

Right answer:
The beast pulls out a small book and checks the last page. "That is correct, adventurer. You may pass."
It lifts the iron portcullis, granting you passage into <next level>.
Wrong answer:
The creature squints at you. "That answer doesn't make any sense."
"Well, your riddle doesn't make any sense!" you protest.
"Look, just go away and think about it for a while. You can try again later."
You snort derisively and stomp away in a huff.

Right answer:
"Huh," the creature says, surprised. "That is in fact the answer. How did you figure it out?"
"I'm just good at riddles, I guess," you say, trying not to look too shifty.
"Well, a deal is a deal. You have won passage to <next level>. Congratulations."
It lifts the heavy iron portcullis, and you stroll through.
Wrong answer:
"Incorrect!" the beast roars. "Not even close!"
"Hell," you say. "Are you going to eat me?"
"What? Certainly not, I'm a vegetarian. I'm just not letting you though the gate, that's all."
"Oh," you say, a little relieved.

Right answer:
The beast checks a post-it note stuck to the gate, and nods. "That is apparently the answer, though damned if I can see it. You may pass."
It lifts the heavy iron portcullis for you, and you enter <next level>.
Wrong answer:
"Incorrect," the creature says, shaking its head. "Sorry, I know it's a tricky one."
"So what happens now?" you ask. "Do I have to fight you, or something?"
"Technically I'm supposed to eat you, but I'm on a diet," it says. "Just come back later and I'll let you have another guess."
