Wooden Gate Carvings

It's pretty clear that the carvings here tell you which of The Three Gates you're going to encounter at The Entrance Cavern (1) - armchair = Slack, cowardly-looking man = Humility, banana peel = Hilarity, hedgehog = Porcupine, raven = Locked. In all likelihood, there are a total of eleven telescope upgrades (including the base one you get) - the three gates, the 6 Tower monsters, and the two familiars. An extremely nice reward, but for a considerable price - reaching level 500 of the Basement is no easy feat! --Quietust (t|c) 16:50, 13 July 2007 (CDT)

  • It's possible that some of that info won't be given. For instance: the second and third gates always require South of the Border items and Bang potions respectively, so it doesn't help as much to know the specific item you need. --Starwed 12:49, 17 July 2007 (CDT)
  • I should point out that the associations I listed are merely speculative, though they are certainly the most likely ones. Verification is very much desired on all of these. --Quietust (t|c) 10:21, 20 July 2007 (CDT)
  • I don't think the armchair is gate of slack. Looking through my telescope, I see the armchair, but my first gate was Gate of Spirit. Mr. Blonde 01:02, 22 July 2007 (CDT)
    • And that's what I was looking for - actual confirmation of what the gates really are. --Quietust (t|c) 07:42, 25 July 2007 (CDT)

"...an elaborate carving of a rose" could possibly be Suc Rose (a bad pun?) or Morose Morbidity and Moping (a black rose?). --Quietust (t|c) 10:21, 20 July 2007 (CDT)

    • Since the MMM gate has been figured out, the rose is very likely Suc Rose (since it wouldn't make much sense for Slack). --Quietust (t|c) 07:44, 25 July 2007 (CDT)

  • Hmm, is a average player (w/o ultra rares ane extremely expensive stuff) who is going for the level 30 trophies, going to be strong enough to reach level 500 in the basement by/on level 30? --JRSiebz (|§|) 17:02, 13 July 2007 (CDT)
    • I think, by level 30, it's do-able. You'll still need plexiglass equipment and a huge number of various potions, though. --TechSmurf 17:11, 13 July 2007 (CDT)
    • I'm planning to try this (as a muscle class of course). Assuming that the required stat is still (level)^1.4, level 500 would correspond to buffed-stat 6000. Level 30 is 845 mainstat, so I'll need 610% in buffs. I'll need a lot of sauce potions and a couple of wads, but nothing more expensive than that. --PlatypusNinja 22:00, 13 July 2007 (CDT)
    • I did reach lv500 with level 31 TT and i have grimacite glaive, plexi hat and watch, stainless slacks suspenders and solitaire. i used almost all buff aviable except flower power, clan buff and almost all the time use only one buff wad at a time. I'm sure level 30 is do-able with enough plexi. Akahad 06:04, 15 July 2007 (CDT)
    • I just hit it at level 27 (697 mainstat) as a Sauceror, really the cheapest class to do it as, and I actually started my final couple hundred floors of diving at just under level 26. That's with no equipment more difficult to obtain than plexi. Of course, I have almost every skill permanent; they really make a difference in the basement now, particularly Tao on the Gauntlet. Also, I filled in the viper gate above. :)--Salien 06:55, 25 July 2007 (CDT)

Starry-Eyed

What does this effect do? Is it worth doing a bunch of Basement runs for? --PlatypusNinja 22:00, 13 July 2007 (CDT)

It seems to give a +5% on all my stats Akahad 06:04, 15 July 2007 (CDT)

Interesting. Does it do anything more (stronger effect, longer duration) after it's upgraded? --PlatypusNinja 22:35, 31 July 2007 (CDT)

  • ...huh. After one upgrade, Starry-Eyed is +10% now. Didn't know effects could do that. --Ricket 00:04, 1 August 2007 (CDT)
Presumably the effect is looking at how many upgrades you currently have, as I don't think effects pay any attention to how they were obtained. I suppose the way to test this is to get the starry-eyed effect and then upgrade your telescope. --Starwed 02:02, 1 August 2007 (CDT)

Hardcore and Bad Moon

The telescope is available in both hardcore and softcore, right? Anyone know if it's there when you're under Bad Moon? (Not sure anyone has gotten both the telescope and Bad Moon yet.) --Harry Crimboween 12:49, 17 July 2007 (CDT)

  • If you get it when you're in softcore, is it there when you go to hardcore? --CG1:t,c,e 16:23, 17 July 2007 (CDT)
how exactly is this ugraded?? --charred 13:04, 25 July 2007 (CDT)
nevermind, found it. yay for reading comprehension!!! --charred 13:07, 25 July 2007 (CDT)
  • Yes, even if you get it in a Casual run, it'll be there in Hardcore. (That's what I did.) I'd also like to know what happens to it in Bad Moon. --Prestige 20:38, 29 July 2007 (CDT)
    • So I ascended into Bad Moon and my Telescope was not there. --Prestige 08:38, 4 August 2007 (CDT)
      • Does it come back when you free the king in Bad Moon or does it wait until a non-Bad Moon ascension?--Yiab 08:44, 11 September 2007 (CDT)
      • As far as I can recall, it did not come back after freeing the king, which is consistent with the behavior of the rest of Bad Moon. --Prestige 17:11, 11 September 2007 (CDT)

First tower window

A fancy-looking tophat means a bowling cricket? Is that right? I'd think it'd be the fancy bath slug. --TechSmurf 20:42, 2 August 2007 (CDT)

-Now why in the world would it be a cricket? i suggest we keep it unknown until we can verify - otherwise it'll fool people--Argus 21:08, 2 August 2007 (CDT)

Trust me, I updated it; I waited until I could confirm it to add the second part, since I first spied this tower monster with my upgraded telescope. Tomorrow I'll have my 3rd upgrade ;)--Whiskey Jack 22:11, 2 August 2007 (CDT)

Upgrades 2-4

All have upgraded my ability to see the tower. Now I can see the first half of the tower. I also noticed that what shows up on one upgrade can show up at a higher level, since the tower monsters are random on what level they show up on (except for the 6th window). So I'm going to rearrange it into two sections, Upgrades 1-5 for the first 5 levels of tower, and then Upgrade 6 (will change if that doesn't end up being the case). For proof, I saw the tip of a baseball bat on floor 1 and 3 in the past two runs.--WhiskeyJack 08:50, 4 August 2007 (CDT)

BTW, If you have ONE ASCENSION, and can't confirm the tower monsters that correspond to the text, please leave it alone. For one, that last one has to be wrong, since the mineshaft golem doesn't appear at tower level three...ever. It just makes it a pain when I have to turn it back to unconfirmed AGAIN. I'll have it confirmed today most likely...so just be patient and keep your guesses to yourself, or put guessing on the discussion page please. I don't want to come off as a dick, it's just that I put a lot of effort into these telescope runs and this random wild guessing on the actual wiki page, instead of the discussion page, is starting to annoy me.--WhiskeyJack 09:31, 5 August 2007 (CDT)

Functionality of multiple upgrades

I must admit to being somewhat confused about how the telescope works with multiple upgrades. With, say, three upgrades, will you only see level 3 of the tower? Will you see everything up to and including the 3d level? Also, as for the first five levels being random: Does this mean that with sufficient upgrades you will know which monsters you are facing, just not in what order? --Deusnoctum 04:50, 16 August 2007 (CDT)

With multiple upgrades you see everything you saw before that upgrade plus a new section of the Lair. For example, I have gotten the coupon 7 times now, and can see the gate and 6 tower monsters. The 6th tower monster is always a shore monster (so one of those 3 guys). You'll know exactly which monster goes at what level of the tower. I'll post a screenshot sometime soon of using the telescope with all those upgrades. Gotta jet!--WhiskeyJack 17:09, 18 August 2007 (CDT)

WhiskeyJack, I just wanted to say I really dig the work you've been doing on the telescope upgrades (I only have 1 myself). I assume you're going for the next one, and I'm looking forward to seeing what it does. --Prestige 01:07, 19 August 2007 (CDT)

I've gotten the 8th coupon...and it is different. I can confirm that no more of the Sorceress' Lair is revealed beyond the top of the tower. Not wanting to start controversy quite yet, I'm going to remain mum on the exact details of what happens. (plus, I didn't get a screenshot, will have to do it again, hehe)--WhiskeyJack 21:00, 21 August 2007 (CDT)

You tease. :P --Ashallond 21:42, 21 August 2007 (CDT)

Here I am praising you, and now you're not going to tell us what the next one does! Can't wait to find out. --Prestige 04:55, 22 August 2007 (CDT)

Aww, man. That's just mean.--Therum 13:11, 22 August 2007 (CDT)

Huge spoiler of what a full telescope looks like here: Full Scope --WhiskeyJack 21:58, 24 August 2007 (CDT)

  • Er, how exactly is that picture a "huge spoiler"? It's exactly what we expected it would give - the first gate, all 6 floors of the tower, and nothing more. If the 8th gift certificate adds a new way to use the telescope (beyond looking high or low), I don't see how it would be harmful to share it on the wiki (unless it's like the Ragamuffin Imp puzzle by telling you not to spoil it). --Quietust (t|c) 09:47, 28 August 2007 (CDT)
  • I just meant, a big picture, hehe. The 8th, and presumably the 9th and beyond, are something fairly interesting, and could have a niche use in bleeding edge speedcore, so I don't want to spoil quite yet, just to steer clear of any controversy for now. Hoping people will respect that wish...--WhiskeyJack 20:44, 29 August 2007 (CDT)
  • I respect you (will you still respect me in the morning?) but I still say you're a tease. ;) --Ashallond 22:36, 29 August 2007 (CDT)

Okay, the "won't spoil yet" comment was over a year ago. Want to share it now? Nothing here or on the page proper talks about more than six upgrades. --Club (#66669) (Talk) 00:53, 31 December 2008 (UTC)

The Sinister Dodecahedron

The new update tells us that "Some amateur astronomers with telescopes in their campsites have determined that the new object in the sky is no moon -- it's a space station!". That might mean that we could use the Telescope to look at this "space station". So... can someone "Look High" and try it out? If you're willing, that is.--Aznpride 21:16, 10 December 2007 (CST)

  • It has been discussed on another page and they all say that they can't see the space station. --Chunky_boo 21:31, 10 December 2007 (CST)

Bees Hate You

  • (without upgrades): "You focus the telescope on the entrance of the cave, and see a mass of bees surrounding it." Can someone with a better telescope get the tower message(s) too? --Christog 23:02, 23 June 2011 (UTC)
  • I already posted all the text on the Bees Hate You talkpage.--Toffile 02:44, 24 June 2011 (UTC)

A Bugbear Invasion

When used (with 4 upgrades) at the start of my Bugbear Invasion ascension: "You see the nether regions of a giant bugbear-shaped spaceship." Will post on the "A Bugbear Invasion" talkpage.

Revamp

I own a (formerly?) fully upgraded telescope and already beat the NS before the revamp. Instead of 7 lines of hints I'm only getting 6 now when I look low. The Starry-Eyed effect is still 35%, though, so I'm guessing either the last obstacle would somehow vanish (unlikely when I can still see the other 6) or the final upgrade just adds another +5% to the buff (no complaints here).
Should we do a A Telescope/Old page or move the old text into a really big history section? --Yatsufusa (talk) 13:22, 1 January 2015 (UTC)

It looks like the tower is NOT random anymore. Therefore, the preview you get is for the earlier parts of the quest which ARE variable. --Wrldwzrd89 (talk) 13:32, 1 January 2015 (UTC)

I do not have a fully upgraded telescope, and I get a +20% buff from it. (I think it's level 4, but I could be wrong.) The tower has random elements here and there- a bunch of the new stuff and it tells you what kind of stuff to expect. Either way, I suggest a telescope/old.--BlueMysteryWolf (talk) 01:57, 5 January 2015 (UTC)
