Talk:Anapest combat

From A KoL Wiki

In the notes it says: "When you see XXX in the rhymes on this page, know each X is a syllable, earning its wage." Has somebody actually verified that?

I only ask because I, personally, added the "You rescue an <item> from the local street-sweepers. It's not really yours, but well, hey, finders keepers!" item drop message.

The original text said: "You rescue an ORANGE from the local street-sweepers. It's not really yours, but well, hey, finders keepers!"

I went to the noob cave purposely to get an orange drop, in order to find out if the messages would change from "A" to "An" with an item started with a vowel.

Let me sum it up this way: An X for each syllable? I think that's untrue; An orange hasn't one syllable, in fact it has two!

P.S. I am also pretty sure that I got messages with fudgecules other than the "three syllable" ones. I cannot confirm that for sure, but I am positively sure about message with the orange.

I think the item messages are just random (or at least only for the items you get in The Suburbs of Dis).Nadando 00:50, 5 January 2012 (CET)

I'm pretty sure that the comment is accurate, or at least mostly accurate. The items I got to drop today were all pretty consistent. If I had to guess, I'd say that "Orange" is marked as a one syllable item name in the database - some people pronounce it with one syllable, and if the street-sweepers message was a two syllable message, it wouldn't scan. The majority of the lines are in anapestic tetrameter, so four feet of three syllables each, for a total of 12 syllables; yes, I know there's a good number of dissenters, but I'm pretty sure that that's the case. If I had a haiku katana I'd get an orange with Haiku State of Mind and see how many syllables they think it is that way. --Johnny Treehugger 02:04, 5 January 2012 (CET)

So does each new item added to the game have a "number of syllables" field for haiku and anapest combat? We could mark that on the item pages if so... Nadando 02:20, 5 January 2012 (CET)
I believe so, I vaguely remember reading the transcript for the radio show not long after the haiku katana came out, and someone was complaining that they had to go through the entire database and count how many syllables each item name was. I don't think we really need that info on the wiki, since 1) it's easy enough to figure it out most of the time, 2) it only matters for those two random effects, and 3) it would be a lot of work. --Johnny Treehugger 02:25, 5 January 2012 (CET)

I did a bit more spading on this (now that my spleen reset) & it seems that some of the messages are variable.

I got Mountain Stream sodas, bottles of vodka, piles of candy, dire fudgesicles, & cardboard katanas all with both "XXXX" & "XXXXX" messages.

Five syllables seems to be the limit for getting specific messages; items with six or more syllables get the "generic" messages that don't mention the item name.

I think Johnny's right about the orange being counted as a one syllable word. I got more orange drops & they all had single syllable messages. Maybe some items are classified by how many syllables are pronounced, rather than spelling alone?--SnarFoo 23:04, 5 January 2012 (CET)SnarFoo

Trouble with the rhyme template

I've encountered a problem with the rhyme template.

The rhyme template only accommodates two line rhymes. With four lines of rhyme (curly brackets removed & line spaces added for demonstration)

rhyme|center=no

|l1=The tootlers tootle! The singers all sing!

|l2=You've accomplished a wonderful, glorious thing!

|l3=Come raise a glass high, and come join in the revel!

|l4=We're all celebrating! You went up a level!

It parses like this

The tootlers tootle! The singers all sing!
You've accomplished a wonderful, glorious thing!
Come raise a glass high, and come join in the revel!
We're all celebrating! You went up a level!

Notice that the last two lines are not shown. (they are in the code, click edit to see them)

This level up message did indeed have the four lines as above, but I had to split the couplets into separate paragraphs to make all the lines show in section 6.4.7 . If some-one could change the template to accept more lines, or else tell me how to add more lines with the current template, that would be great. Thanks--SnarFoo 01:28, 10 January 2012 (CET)SnarFoo

Skeleton companions trigger messages as familiars in anapest combat. Since the page is, as best I can tell, composed entirely of headings and direct game quotes, I do not know how to express this. --AtGNAT (talk) 16:56, 25 March 2013 (UTC)

more hit messages

In the Glacier of Jerks I got a bunch more messages from getting hit that aren't listed here for some reason; here they are in case I missed them on the wiki.

The monster leaps at you, and then, with a sneer, it pulls out your gall bladder, right through your ear.

The monster attacks with that weapon it's got! I won't go into details, but it hurts quite a lot!

The monster decides to attack at this juncture, and now your HP's leaking out of a puncture.

With a jeer and a chuckle and a terrible grin, the monster tears unpleasant holes in your skin.

With a shout of aggression, she leaps to attack, and gets off a hit before you can react.

Your enemy leaps to attack, and she hits, looking quite pleased by the pain she inflicts.
