Talk:Gloomy black mushroom

From A KoL Wiki

Moon phase

Perhaps a better way to indicate the moon phase requirement:

knoll mushroom spooky mushroom knoll mushroom knob mushroom
pointy mushroom cool mushroom
frozen mushroom spooky mushroom
gloomy black mushroom

Also, not sure if the requirement is stated clearly enough - the spore forms during rollover when the moons become the given state. --Quietust 21:02, 16 March 2006 (CST)

If the spore forms when the moons *become* double dark, the recipe should show the moons the day before. If you plant the spooky spore to sprout when the moons are black, you'll have missed the opportunity and need to wait another 2 weeks. --Criswell 10:51, 28 March 2006 (CST)

Jick has indicated on the radio show that the new mini-moon will not affect growing gloomy black mushrooms. --DataVortex 01:22, 9 June 2006 (CDT)

When to start

Isn't it that a fully grown mushroom will, if not given the opportunity to breed, stick around for several days? I think that's the way it works, and if that is the case, one need only get a frozen mushroom one space away from a stinky mushroom and then leave them for a week or two. If the mushrooms don't dissapear until they breed, then they would remain unbred until both moons were black. Is that not the way it works? I think I remember leaving mature mushrooms alone and them not dissapearing so long as they were not breeding.Lotusduck 12:53, 22 March 2006 (CST)

Both good points - the first is definitely not clear from the current text. To your point, Lotusduck, I haven't tested if the mushrooms will stick around if they are left at a breeding distance on a non-black moon rollover; however, a foolproof form of birth control is to plant spores between the mushrooms each day, this will keep them from breeding until the day of your choice.

One point that I would like to see clarified - is the cross-breeding frozen/spooky or frozen/stinky? The page states spooky, but Lotusduck's comment above indicates stinky. --pdubs 09:43, 23 March 2006 (CST)

Oops, sorry I mis-typed. I mean spooky. So far my mushrooms seem to not be going bad simply by not being allowed to breed. That's why he looks so young! Lotusduck 23:20, 23 March 2006 (CST)

You can set up a full icy mushroom plot then set it to the circle pattern remove the correct 3 and replace with spooky mushrooms the pattern will be set and on the day you will gain 8 gloomy mushrooms. Which by the way will be 2 picks from being a circle pattern.

To set up this sequence simply set up a normal circle so that icy mushrooms are on the diagonal once they get to that point, pick all but the icy mushrooms. the next day will be a spore 6 pack on the diagonal, leave for 3 days and you will have 8 icy shrooms like the normal circle you pick the 2 in the center and every other one on the circle and plant spooky mushrooms in each spot, then you just wait for the gloomy day. now if gloomy and gloomy make gloomy spores you can pick the center two every other day and you'll have an endless field that makes 1 gloomy a day, but only harvests every other day.

Day 12 --Uzziah

Not bad, but people who farm mushrooms for profit may want a faster method that grows more extra mushrooms along the way. The method above takes 12 days and can grow up to 64 extra mushrooms. I have a way that only takes 10 days and can grow 66 extras.

"Of the 64 you get 7 tier 3's and 2 tier 2's. I.e. you can complete the quest during this run as you get atleast 1 of each tier 3 type.

Of the 66 you get 0 tier 3's and 0 tier 2's. I.e. you can't complete the quest for mushroom planting.

It all depends on what you want as an end goal, both methods work to get 8 gloomy on the right day and both methods have the same setup just prior to getting the 8 gloomy. its the extra on the way if you want tier 1's go with the method below if you want a few tier 2 and 3 go with the one above, simple enough." --Uzziah 10:30, 31 March 2006 (CST)

On any odd day, when the field is dominated by sprouts, it goes without saying that you can plant extra spores anywhere that's open. Therefore I will only show the spores that you absolutely need. However, there are a few extra spores planted among adult mushrooms on even days, so I will show you the placement of these extra mushrooms explicitly.

It seems that Gloomy Black Mushrooms do not self-breed, but stay as Gloomy Black Mushrooms until picked. --Criswell 20:11, 16 April 2006 (CDT)

WARNING do not place spores between your gloomy mushrooms, I did this with spooky mushrooms just to make sure they wouldn't self breed while I was away. Needless to say I lost a few gloomy mushrooms by a bug. Gloomies are not looked upon by the patch as mushrooms and will be replaced if 2 mushrooms would breed a new shroom in their spot.--Uzziah 13:00, 17 April 2006 (CDT)

Easy way to state the moon phase requirement?

"You need to plant the spores that will eventually cross-breed into the Frozen mushroom(s) on the first day after the two Muscle days; you then need to plant the spore(s) that will become the Spooky mushroom(s) on the last day before the two Moxie days."

How's that? -- Antaeus Feldspar 22:25, 28 March 2006 (CST)

No, because you can start planting them at any day what-so-ever. Any mushrooms not breeding will remain unchanged while you wait for new moons. Lotusduck 22:55, 28 March 2006 (CST)

There is a faster way to get the eight gloomy mushrooms...but I digress...do gloomy black mushrooms breed with each other the way other mushrooms do? --Doppelheathen 20:38, 29 March 2006 (CST)

If you know how to make 8 gloomies in less than 10 days, I'd like to see it. (If one runs short on time I think you can breed 6 in 8 days.) --stannius 12:00, 30 March 2006 (PST)
Stannius if you go to day 5 in my example and remove a corner and alternate you get 6 in 6 days, thats the nice part about the how mine is setup there are 4 days when you can remove and replace spores if you run short on time. --Uzziah 10:38, 31 March 2006 (CST)
That's just a difference in semantics... Your "6 days" in this comment doesn't include the first spore day or the last day when you pick your gloomies; but the other breeding plans shown on this page do include those days when they count how many days it takes. Thanks for sketching out the pattern, though. --stannius

General

For some reason my new Gloomy Black Mushrooms are not auto sellable. Has "Cannot be traded. Cannot be discarded." in the item description and does not show up in the sell menu. I am currently in HC, so that might be it. But I wouldn't think it would affect the whole item description. Bug, or sneaky change? --Billlbo 21:44, 17 May 2006 (CDT)

Nothing strange about that. The line "Cannot be discarded." only ever appears in items that can't be autosold, since only items with a 0 sell value can be discarded. If you check, you'll find the same is true of ten-leaf clovers (except they can be traded). --Temporary man 17:26, 18 June 2006 (CDT)

Why does it say that the plural is impossible to know? You can get more than one gloomy mushrrom at a time! --Kookoo275 22:41, 31 July 2006 (CDT)

  • No, you can't - you can only pick one mushroom at a time, so you will never actually see anything like "You acquire 2 gloomy black mushrooms" in the game. See Template Talk:Plural for more information. --Quietust 22:44, 31 July 2006 (CDT)
