Talk:Oversized fish scaler

From A KoL Wiki

There seems to be a wider range on the low end for damage. My baby gravy fairy "gets creative with the fish scaler, scaling your opponent for 11 damage." This was on the Battlefield --El Trasero 08:58, 26 December 2007 (CST)

I got this message in combat with the scaler: (name) gets creative with the fish scaler, scaling your opponent for 23 damage.--Ken the Pastamancer 22:48, 14 December 2007 (CST)

It wouldn't be a definite 20-30; it'd have to scale. Yes, I am aware of the pun there. Can we get some more data from varying familiar weights?--Chugsworth 22:54, 14 December 2007 (CST)

23 pound PRESSIE did 20-23 damage, about 15 rounds of testing. It attacked nearly every round. A 6 pound sombrero attacked for 21-25 damage at nearly the same rate as the PRESSIE. It seems like weight doesn't matter at all.--Penguinwarrior06 22:58, 14 December 2007 (CST)

  • Will it make pet rocks(and other non-active familiars) attack? --Plater (t|c) 23:23, 14 December 2007 (CST)
  • Can the scaler activate with other abilities, or does it cancel other familiar effects? --The KoW 03:10, 15 December 2007 (CST)

(assume he is wilson){my toothsome rock} gets creative with the fish scaler, scaling your opponent for 23 damage. and

buddy box sits motionless. buddy box gets creative with the fish scaler, scaling your opponent for 21 damage.--Faggle 00:43, 15 December 2007 (CST)

My 17lb Wizard Action figure used the scaler once out of fire rounds(so far) for 23 damage. Also did it's normal damage spell at the same time.
--Tiwaz 04:35, 15 December 2007 (CST)

I think it'll be nerfed. Think about it; constant activation rate with damage that can one-hit everything pre-Fun House(?) except bosses with no player input.

What monsters does this thing hit? All of them, or only fish-type monsters, such as lobsterfrogman? --Keeko1642 08:30, 15 December 2007 (CST)

This thing hits all monsters. Also, I adventured 7 turns with a 16-Pound Penguin Goodfella with it, and it did around 20-25 Damage. I did not see it go up to 30 yet.--Penguin Overlord 09:10, 15 December 2007 (CST)

What monsters are being attacked with this thing? I think it likely it will scale the damage to the power of the enemy. --Esmioley 10:22, 15 December 2007 (CST)

  • Scratch that. Fighting at the haunted pantry, my 12-Pound Frozen Gravy Fairy still did 24 damage. --Esmioley 10:26, 15 December 2007 (CST)

Definately seems a fixed range, all my damage with a 30lb PRESSIE has been 23 or 24. It's not necessarily nerf-worthy since it doesn't add weight - were it to add weight as well it'd be tending more towards a useful item. Unless it has another effect not found yet... :P --Denarius 11:21, 15 December 2007 (CST)

Just curious, was there any indication of change in the monster level?--Devion 12:19, 15 December 2007 (CST)

Got one today, gave it to my Ghoul Whelp, and have not seen him/her/it hit with it except for the last round. Could this just part be part of the Whelp's code (only act on the last round)?--Erishiku 13:01, 15 December 2007 (CST)

My familiar attacked the Mobile Armored Sweat Lodge and dealed only 11 damage. So maybe it depends on the enemy defence?--Tio fer 17:54, 26 December 2007 (CST)

  • The scaler does physical damage, so there's no reason to believe that Physical Resistance wouldn't have its usual effect. --Bagatelle 18:50, 26 December 2007 (CST)

The scaler.

This item can attack(I guess) with the familier. My flaming fairy gravy hit a hellion for 1 damage(hot damage) and it also hit for 21 damage the same turn with the scaler.

--Karoly1 13:20, 15 December 2007 (CST)

Okay, some spading on damage and frequency. Using a new familiar (Green Pixie with 0 kills this ascention), over the course of 29 rounds of combat, it used the scaler 9 times for between 21 & 24 damage each time.
More info in a bit.
With a 29lb Wizard Action Figure, over 24 rounds of combat is used it 11 times, between 20 & 24 damage each time.
Oh yes, My testing was against Goats at the goatlet. --Tiwaz 14:53, 15 December 2007 (CST)

If you add a directional component to it, does it become an oversized fish vector? And if not, why not? --Sairindhri 21:53, 17 December 2007 (CST)

Fishy Fish

Does this item have any additional effect when you eat a fishy fish or any related food items?--GoldS 14:56, 15 December 2007 (CST)

On a related note, there seems to be - to the best of my knowledge - one fish monster in the game. It's the Vine Gar, which is obviously kind of difficult to test against, given the nature to the Gar's habitat. Other than the Vine Gar and foods derived from Fishy Fish, other fish references in the game include the Plexiglass Pike Pike, the Fish Bowl, Hose, and Tank from the lair, and the Warty Pirate's fish-liver oil. The Cement Shoes give an intrinsic called "Sleeping with the fishes". The Star Starfish isn't quite a fish. The Spectral Jellyfish isn't quite a fish. Bouillabaise Coucher Avec Moi from Canadia is made of fish. Most of these seem like -extreme- longshots. If there's any connection between these and the Scalar, I'd be pretty surprised. Frequency of attack

Did some testing of the frequency by equipping it on a Leprechaun and running through the Hole in the Sky.

  • Pound 6: Rate: 68/204 (33.33%)
  • Pound 7: Rate: 104/292 (35.62%)
  • Pound 8: Rate: 114/342 (33.33%)
  • Pound 9: Rate: 129/370 (34.86%)
  • Pound 10: Rate: 154/456 (33.77%)
  • Pound 11: Rate: 160/498 (32.13%)
  • Pound 12: Rate: 177/537 (32.96%)
  • Pound 13: Rate: 192/571 (33.63%)
  • Pound 14: Rate: 203/573 (35.43%)

For a total of 1301 attacks, out of 3843 occurrences. --Foggy 08:04, 2 May 2008 (CDT)

Old Man and the Sea

I ran out of adventures before I could test this very much, but does this do anything special against the fish(es) in the briny deep? You can equip it with a barrrnacle (as it can already breathe underwater)... Spaders... Ready, Set, Go! --Gleezus 21:29, 11 October 2008 (UTC)

The forums claim that it guarantees a dull fish scale drop. --Depravity 16:55, 24 October 2008 (UTC)

On the forums, from Jick, just now: "Crap. The 100% activation on fish scaler was a debugging change that accidentally went live. It has been fixed/nerfed. Sorry to get your hopes up..." --Lxndr 05:07, 26 October 2008 (UTC)

OK, I updated the article. I didn't get a chance to spade the activation rate, but looks way lower than the 100% that it used to be. I'm going to assume it still doesn't give a second scale if one drops normally, though it's harder to re-test that theory now. --Prestige 07:34, 26 October 2008 (UTC)
Just lost a scale to the dolphin while one was plucked by my familiar. Article updated.--PiLS (talk) 07:46, 2 September 2015 (UTC)
