"He tries to strangle you with his bowtie, but it turns out it's a clip-on." --Worlds Number 1 Grandpa 03:16, 4 October 2006 (CDT)

"He tries to buttle you in the arm, but ends up buttling himself instead. You tell him to stop buttling himself, and he replies "Would that I could, sir." --Tripwood 03:21, 4 October 2006 (CDT)

"He throws his bowler hat at you, but it's only felt, so you barely feel it. Er, it is barely felt by you. --Tripwood 03:21, 4 October 2006 (CDT)

Missing Attack Message?

There's an attack message missing, where he throws a shoe at you. Seems to be an Austin Powers reference. --Telurium 21:47, 5 October 2006 (CDT)

  • I got the same message, but forgot to copy it... and I agree with the Austin Powers reference. Your character says "Who throws a shoe?" when he hits you with it. --Gleezus 09:36, 6 October 2006 (CDT)

Only Post-Crypt?

Is this adventure only available after defiling the Cyrpt, or is it available regardless of your status on that quest? On an un-undefiled-Cyrpt character, I spent about 43 Adventures trying to get the adventure; to no avail. I'm prepared to accept it as a case of RNG screw, of course, but it's worth asking. Before I forget; yes - I did use and check the Memo before trying to get this adventure. --Kenjoki Ikari 00:55, 5 October 2006 (CDT)

  • I read the memo and spent over 15 adventures at the cemetary, without the butler showing up. I read the memo again and adventured there for another 10 turns, and still the butler didn't appear. I thought I had lost my only chance to get the fork for this run, when I realized that I still had to undefile the crypt (alas kill the bonerdagon). After I completed the quest, I read the memo again, and to my surprise, the butler did show up. So, it appears that it doesn't matter how many times you read the memo, if you didn't clear the crypt. Just thought this info could be useful.--Best22 23:23, 30 October 2009 (UTC)

Stat Gain

AS for stat gains I got the following (moxie class, not a stat day, pretty sure not stat boosting equpi/familiars)
You gain 8 Fortitude.
You gain 8 Enchantedness.
You gain 18 Sarcasm.

One chance per ascension only, and don't CLEESH it up?

I found him after I un-defiled the Cyrpt, and I lost :( now, despite 100+ adventures' worth of adventuring there, I can't find him again. Perhaps he's once-per-ascension? --Thoby123 06:10, 8 October 2006 (CDT)

I had the same experience-- found him when I was low on HP, and he kicked my arse. I've adventured at the Cemetary another 75 times or so and I haven't seen him again. --JemmyLegs 21:22, 8 October 2006 (CDT)

  • Perhaps you need to get the memo again, like how the dance card works? --Phlip 01:12, 9 October 2006 (CDT)
  • No, I have had the same experience as well. My guess is that you have only one shot. --Xym 10:52, 10 October 2006 (CDT)
  • I lost against him too yesterday, and didn't meet him again today (mimic anyone?). You don't lose the memo however, but I'll still try to get another one. --Hurax 06:27, 11 October 2006 (CDT)
  • Can't get another memo, tried against 16 Nightstands with no luck. --Thoby123 09:26, 11 October 2006 (CDT)

Same experience from me. I encountered him at the fift adv. after having read the memo, and it does not appear anymore. Cna we put this on the main page? --Luos 04:41, 12 October 2006 (CDT)

And same for me. I went ahead and added it to the page just before the references. --Spud 07:45, 16 October 2006 (CDT)

I'm getting the same, but has anyone tried to get him again the next day, like the Dungeons of Doom Mimic? --LegendaryBard 00:41, 16 November 2006 (CST)

I got half of a memo from my multi and tried to CLEESH him. He turned into a frog, so it seems he's CLEESHable. No fork when I CLEESHed him. Wanted to try to encouter him again, but i had only 1 adventure left. --Zigota Lt 05:26, 3 November 2006 (CST)

I CLEESHed the butler, he turned into a frog. 40 adventures later and he still hasn't reappeared. Looks like it's no good if you CLEESH him. --Optimus Rhyme 13:48, 5 November 2006 (CST)

Moxie for No Hit & Spooky Resistance issues

  • The moxie for no hit is probably incorrect for this fight. I had a moxie of 189 and got hit 3 rounds in a row, and they were the normal, not the critical hit messages. He stopped hitting me after 2 plot holes (though 1 might have been sufficient, as he was stunned after the first but I used a 2nd for good measure). --Adbax 20:26, 9 November 2006 (CST)
  • The Butler is not in the standard monster format but if someone would fix that he's immune to spooky and hit me quite easily with 111 moxy so the moxy for nohit is higher than that. --Grax 10:19, 30 March 2007 (CDT)

References

"Stiff upper lip" is a classic American idiom, hardly limited to Pirates of Penzance. I'd think if it WAS a reference, it would likely be to the AC/DC album. Unless someone can back up the Pirates claim with specific lyrics, it should probably be removed. --Dorf 12:32, 10 March 2007 (CST)

Unavailable to Seal-Clubbers Now?

It appears that there may be a bug since the recent Seal-Clubber update. My multi, Eldarion (#1141869), adventured Post-Crypt and after reading the half of a memo and was completely unable to get Skelter as an adventure. I did get 5 out of my first 10 adventures in the graveyard as seals, however, so I suspect the ultra-common adventure code may be out of whack. Curious if anyone can confirm or disprove. Thanks.--Mis2027 20:05, 8 May 2009 (UTC)

  • I had a similar issue when trying to get the hippy disguise in the hippy camp at level 9. Got the first piece from a noncombat, but then the noncombat for the second piece never came up. Seems there's a flag-setting/clearing issue. --Flargen 20:25, 8 May 2009 (UTC)

Do Love Songs screw it up?

I fought him today, barely won using three love songs (two vague ambiguity, one smoldering passion), but didn't get the fork. --Phantomreader42 22:28, 26 May 2009 (UTC)

  • Now that I check my inventory, I did get the fork, but it didn't say so after the battle. --Phantomreader42 22:30, 26 May 2009 (UTC)

Do the new Nemesis combats screw it up too?

...yeah, what the title says. Adventured for 5 turns, then got the menacing thug. No encounter with the butler has appeared since.--Ephesos 09:07, 21 February 2010 (UTC)

I'm going to go with "busted", too

Two ascensions in a row, last as PM, this as S, I've used the memo and adventured for >10 adventures and no appearance of our friendly butler. Anyone seen anything different? Is there maybe a new trigger aside from reading the memo? --Snugglypoo 12:48, 5 November 2010 (UTC)

I completed it two days back as a sauceror and it worked fine. I was HC aftercore. Did you see any out-of-the-ordinary adventures? --Dram 17:08, 5 November 2010 (UTC)

One-time if lose info seems to be wrong

A few days ago, I decided to try fighting Skelter Butleton right after getting the memo in the Spookyraven quest, but since I had +ML going and he was too high a level for me anyway, he beat me up. Now, the article says that means I couldn't encounter him again, but today I returned to the graveyard as part of the Of Mice & Shen quest, and I actually encountered Skelter again, and was able to kill him this time. Was something about his one-time-ness silently changed at some point in the past? --TheGoomba98 (talk) 19:57, 8 July 2021 (UTC)

After a player reported in /hardcore that they were repeatedly losing to Skelter Butleton despite the wiki saying it was a one time fight, I used my memo and can confirm that after running away and stasising to lose the fight with the butler, the next encounter was him again. Users above report being able to CLEESH the butler, that no longer has any effect on him. Given that the above post by TheGoomba98 above confirms the same change in behavior, I am going to change the main page to reflect the current state of affairs, that being losing the fight or running away will cause the butler to reoccur until you win the fight (or you stop trying, I suppose). --BlortHorc (talk) 15:15, 20 June 2024 (UTC)
