Talk:The Haunted Gallery

From A KoL Wiki

Before Unlocking

You try the door to the Gallery, and find that it's locked. You sigh as you think to yourself that you'll probably be required to solve some ridiculous puzzle in order to find the key.

Combat Frequency

I have to take issue with the combat frequency of 80.3%

I just ran 262 turns with sneakiness on, and my combat frequency came out to 91.2%. Now of course this could just be RNG screwage, but 262 turns seems like a whole lot of screwage. With the assumption of 5% reduction for sneakiness, I should have had 65-66 occurances of the Louvre adventure. As it was, I had 23.
Data with Sneakiness running the whole time:
Adventures - 262
Bulls - 67
Empty Suit - 67
Pitchfork - 75
Louvre - 23
Garden/knight - 30
I'll try and keep track for tomorrow (Leveling for a 15 skill in there, currently at level 12)

  • With another 64 adventures: bull:19, suit:13, guy&wife:16, garden:9, louvre:7. More later perhaps. Have to figure if the wheel is better to powerlevel or the louvre...--J12601 18:45, 21 October 2006 (CDT)

The two knights are a non-combat, despite two of the choices leading to combat.--Supernova163 00:12, 5 November 2006 (CST)

Drops

Bounty hunter quest suggests additional drop from cubist bulls: http://images.kingdomofloathing.com/itemimages/hoof.gif non-Euclidean hooves from cubist bulls in the Haunted Gallery --Lsmithmier 08:58, 8 July 2007 (CDT)

Some drops include: antique helmet, antique spear, antique shield, antique greaves (the four of which form the "Antique Arms And Armor" outfit), broken sword, snake shield, and pitchfork. --Verfanor 01:11, 20 September 2006 (CDT)

The Louve it or Leave it adventure, if you enter the painting, so far seems to give you 300 points in a stat. I've gotten it twice and seen 300 Cheek and 300 Strongness.--Manadren 02:12, 20 September 2006 (CDT)

My Sauceror with 104 moxie and spellcasting skills is holding up long enough to take down the enemies, usually in 2-3 hits. The Armor Suit enemy appears to be vulnerable to hot spells.--Hawksmoor 02:14, 20 September 2006 (CDT)

  • From a knight:

knisword.jpg <--graphic serpentine sword

This is a long sword with a bunch of snakes etched into the blade. It's not surprising, really, considering the shape of a sword blade. I mean, it's not like you're going to etch a rhinocerous on there.

What is surprising, though, is that you can hear the snakes hissing. Surprise at that fact is soon followed by annoyance.

________________

Possible outcomes in MC Escher's Gallery are 300 Mus/Myst/Mox, as well as various bottles of wine and Manetwich. I have written my own map and tried every last path. Stat gains are from level 18.

Choosing "sideways" from step one will send you to the Birth of Venus, but can randomly send you elsewhere. Here are the endpoint ones:

300 Myst: "Down" from Salvador Dali, "Up" from the Last Supper

300 Mox: "Up" from the 3-legged pig drawing

300 Mus: "Down" from the sailboat/bustle drawing, "Down" from Manet's Luncheon on the Grass (the 2 men 1 woman painting)

Manetwich: "Up" from Luncheon on the Grass, "Down" from 3-legged pig

Pinot-Renoir: "Up" from Michelangelo's Creation of Adam, "Up" from the Dali

Vangoghbutussin: "Up" from sailboat/bustle, "Down" from the Last Supper

The following pieces of art are "hubs" and will only direct you to other art: Rockstar, The Scream by Edward Munch, The Birth of Venus, Colored Squares

--Empyrion 02:41, 20 September 2006 (CDT)

Choosing two maidens yielded 9 turns of Dreams and Stars effect, which gave me +10 myst and -2 MP cost for my combat skills (didn't check noncombat before it expired). I'm a level 9 Sauceror, so effect duration may be tied to level.--Hawksmoor 02:43, 20 September 2006 (CDT)

Choosing two maidens while you already have a Dreams and Lights effect, will get you a tiger and the loss of some hit points. --Empyrion 02:45, 20 September 2006 (CDT)

I am a level 7 sauceror and recieved the +9 turns of Dreams and Stars. I was also bitten by a tiger the with Dreams and Stars still on. I do not think the Effect Duration is level based. --Feldhorn 19:30, 20 September 2006 (CDT)

To confirm: I let the Dreams and Stars run out and got the 2 knights/2 maidens adventure again and chose the 2 maidens. +9 turns Dreams and Stars. --Feldhorn 19:38, 20 September 2006 (CDT)

My painting mapping is showing differences from Empyrion's, meaning the painting is probably different from account to account, like the Violet Fog.--Hawksmoor 02:46, 20 September 2006 (CDT)

Argh, and I was feeling so pleased with myself for taking pen and paper to KoL. Oh well, let's get more data from other mappers and see if there are any patterns.--Empyrion 02:51, 20 September 2006 (CDT)

Just got 279 muscle substats from a painting exit, so it's apparently not a flat 300 points for every stat result.--Hawksmoor 02:56, 20 September 2006 (CDT)

I noticed something strange about the empty suit of armor drops. For seven encounters, I got exactly one outfit part everytime (over +170% item drops). Unless I got some very strange luck, I think this is not the traditional drop mechanism. --Crowther 11:59, 20 September 2006 (CDT)

I just got Greaves and Shield in the same drop with around 170%--Doz 12:21, 20 September 2006 (CDT)

I just got two as well and also a few zero, so I guess it was just strange luck. --Crowther 12:54, 20 September 2006 (CDT)

Clover Adventure

Adventure Results: With a Clatter

As you're wandering around the Haunted Gallery, you see an interesting painting, and decide to step back a few paces to get a better look at it. As you do, though, you bump into a suit of armor, and noisily knock it off of its pedestal into a heap of rusty parts. Embarrassed, you look around to see if anybody saw you. Some of the eyes in the paintings seem to be following your progress, but nobody important noticed.

You carefully reassemble the suit of armor, and man, are those pieces heavy!

Your ten-leaf clover disappears in a puff of smoke.

You gain 311 Strongness. You gain a Muscle point!

ps. I'm a lvl 14 Sauceror, with 185(124) Muscle, 218(188) Myst, and 150(111) Moxie. Asumming someone will want said info later to figure out scale of stat gains.--Practitioner of Saucy Arts 02:34, 20 September 2006 (CDT)

I'm hunting to get it again, to get more of the map, but that may take a while. Is this the same as other people are getting, or is it Violet Fog-like? Phlip 03:03, 20 September 2006 (CDT)

It's Violet Fog-like. --Blahquabats 03:17, 20 September 2006 (CDT)

I suspect there are 2 each of the stat exits and item exits and 1 exit to the next floor of the Manor, but I've run out of adventures until tomorrow.--Hawksmoor 03:18, 20 September 2006 (CDT)

The "diner" painting is Nighthawks, by Edward Hopper. --Hawksmoor 03:26, 20 September 2006 (CDT)

... and the "Socrates" painting is probably The Death of Socrates, by Jacques-Louis David.--Hawksmoor 03:28, 20 September 2006 (CDT)

Item exits (2 of each): bottle of Pinot Renoir

Manetwich

bottle of Vangoghbitussin

Stat exits (2 of each, for me, a level 10 Disco Bandit):

277 Muscle

200 Mysticality

300 Moxie

There is no exit to the top floor in the maze. I suspect the answer has to do with the antique set of armor.

--Flyingarmadillo 03:31, 20 September 2006 (CDT)

Remember that the 300 moxie is actually a 200 moxie, 'cause it's a stat day... Phlip 03:32, 20 September 2006 (CDT)

I have mapped the entire 'picture' maze: Starting Point~ U: Red, Blue and Yellow D: Venus Escape S: The Scream

Red, Blue and Yellow~ U: Bearded Man D: Adam and God S: Blonde and Rockstar

Adam and God~ U: Bottle of Pinot Renoir D: Poker Dogs +200 Moxie S: Centipede Machine

Bearded Man~ U: Nude Picnic a Manetwich D: Poker Dogs +200 Moxie

Centipede Machine~ U: Red, Blue and Yellow D: The Scream S: Venus Escape

Venus Escape~ U: Monk Queue D: THe Last Supper S: Melting Clocks

Melting Clocks~ U: Bottle of Pinot Renoir D: Starry, Starry Night +200 Mysticality S: Blonde and Rockstar

Blonde and Rockstar~ U: Red, Blue and Yellow D: The Scream S: Venus Escape

The Scream~ U: Monk Queue D: The Diner S: The Sail Race

The Sail Race~ U: Bottle of Vangoghbitussin D: Farmers Cart +300 Muscle S: Centipede Machine

The Last Supper~ U: Starry, Starry Night +200 Mysticality D: Bottle of Vangoghbitussin S: Blonde and Rockstar

Monk Queue~ U: Venus Escape D: The Scream S: Red, Blue and Yellow

The Diner~ U: Farmers Cart +200 Muscle D: Nude Picnic Manetwich S: Centipede Machine

From this someone should be able to associate names of the actual art being described for the final draft, however I am no art major and this makeshift naming system is all I have. I have adjusted the Moxie result back from 300 to 200 on the assumption that it is inline with the Muscle and Mysticality end products but being skewed by the stat day.--Spamurai 03:38, 20 September 2006 (CDT)

All the information on this page about how to find your way around the maze is completely useless, as the maze is different for everyone. --Jubbers 04:39, 20 September 2006 (CDT)

Well, it does confirm two things:
  1. The maze is, in fact, different for everyone.
  2. The maze, like the Violet Fog, has the same structure, only the up/down/sideways options change.
Look at, say, the The Persistence of Memory picture - we agree that it links to Relativity 3 (the one with the queue of monks), the bottle of Pinot Renoir and the Mys boost... only disagreeing on which button goes where, so we could theoretically do the same thing as Violet Fog Map. It might be a little more complex with the 3 Relativities, which have the same destinatons, but it's doable. Phlip 04:53, 20 September 2006 (CDT)

Phlip, you're right. Each painting links to three areas, which are the same for everyone. It's just whether you have to go up, down or sideways to get to each link which changes for everyone.--Jubbers 05:00, 20 September 2006 (CDT)

Yes, the map is different for me, but perhaps the effect of each picture is the same for everyone? --Komet 08:28, 20 September 2006 (CDT)

Yes...just like Violet Fog. Each "pic" has 3 links, which are the same for everyone, but the three directions you must take are different & must be mapped by each individual --Rouver

The specific relativity image, incidentally, will change character to character. For example, on one of my characters, Adam and God link to the Lizards. On another they link to the Monks. Beyond that, the links all work as described above.--Foggy 10:57, 20 September 2006 (CDT)

I believe this entire sequence is a reference to certain chapters in the book "Gödel, Escher, Bach" by Douglas Hofstadter (ISBN 0465026567) in which the characters Achilles and Tortoise travel through a series of paintings by M.C. Escher in a similar way to here.--Risrepkel

I'm not convinced. I've read the book, and I don't see anything here that would be a reference specifically to GEB. I think it's just a general Escher reference. --Supersho 16:48, 20 September 2006 (CDT)

People check out File:Louvre Map.png... it fits both my map and Spamurai's... does anyone disagree with it? Phlip 04:36, 21 September 2006 (CDT)

Re: references, why does the farmer with the horse and cart stuck in the mud by the pond call you "Wayne" in the stat adventure?Jchinique 13:05, 25 September 2006 (CDT)

He doesn't. He's simple giving the correct name for his cart: a hay wain. "Wain" is another word for "wagon" (generally used on farms for carrying especially large loads), and in this farmer's case, it's a wain meant to carry hay ... hence, "hay wain". You learn something (probably useless) every day, eh? --Bork 16:50, 25 September 2006 (CDT)

I haven't received Louvre since I completed the Pastamancer's quest. And will somebody please clean up all the useless info above? It is well known that the direction info is useless for anyone else.--Tara Phinstashun 22:04, 5 October 2006 (CDT)

Just wondering, but how to unlock it? --Cheeetar 09:23, 20 September, 2006 (AEST)

A key drops in a non-combat adventure in the Conservatory --LfO 08:04, 20 September 2006 (CDT)

  • In the billiards room, get a Pool Cue, and several 'handful of hand chalk' items; use the chalk, and go for hte pool game. LEt the ghost break, go for the solids, and then go for the 8-ball. POOF: instant key .... to teh library. Adventure there until you get to read a book - if it's available, take "The Fall of the House of Spookyraven", and read chapter TWO. THEN, you go to teh Conservatory ... you should get the Gallery key right away.--Bork 08:38, 20 September 2006 (CDT)

Out in the Garden

In the Gallery, you find a large painting of two knights and maidens, walking in what seems to be some kind of garden. The sky behind them looks strangely indecisive, as though it were capable of providing all kinds of weather, not just one kind.

The painting is so realistic that it looks like you could walk right into it. In fact, a few seconds of experimentation prove that you can, indeed, walk right into it. Who would you like to talk to, out in the garden?

The First Knight -> Combat with a knight

The Second Knight -> Combat with a knight

The Two Maidens

  • My first visit to the Two Maidens gave me an effect, "Dreams and Lights", which lasts 9 turns. (I tried going back to get more, before the duration ran ou, and lost 26hp instead). The result of this effect seems to be a -3mp cost adjustment to spells ...! --Bork 08:35, 20 September 2006 (CDT)
    • More info, from my S.O. and I together: the First Knight drops a "Wolf Shield"; the Second Knight drops a "Serpentine Sword" and a "Serpent Shield". I suspect the First Knight also drops a sword of some sort.--Bork 10:31, 20 September 2006 (CDT)
  • He does indeed drop a sword. The item is called the lupine sword. I wonder if there will be a difference when wearing armour yourself.
  • Dreams and Lights also reduces offline spells and buff costs. Additional equipment, such as a baconstone bracelet does not stack with Dreams and Lights to reduce buff costs past -3. --Nydgill
  • Message from going to the maidens with the effect already: You walk toward the maidens, hypnotized by the pretty lights and colors surrounding them. Before you get to them, a tiger jumps on you from behind a nearby bush and knocks you down.

Harsh, man. Harsh.

You lose 22 hit points.

Enemy not on the page

I don't really know how to make an enemy page, so if could:

http://images.kingdomofloathing.com/adventureimages/gothic.gif

You're fighting a guy with a pitchfork, and his wife

You walk into the center of the gallery, and hear an impatient throat-clearing sound from behind you. You wheel around and see an old man with a pitchfork, standing next to a plain, stern-looking woman. They must've come out of one of the paintings.

"I reckon you oughta get off my property!" says the man, as he levels his pitchfork at you and they begin to slowly advance toward you.

(attacks) She produces a rolling pin from the folds of her dress and smacks you in the groin with it. Eek! Eek! Ugh! Ouch! You lose 14 hit points.

He hits you with the handle of his pitchfork while she gives you a stern talking-to. Ugh! Eek! Oof! Ugh! You lose 14 hit points.

(win)

You gain 102 Meat.

You gain 10 Strongness. You gain 6 Enchantedness. You gain 9 Sarcasm.

Those could be 2 different cirticals, though i don't know. --RPGMarker35 15:13, 20 September 2006 (CDT)

Dom Edit: This monster drops a Pitchfork

pitchfork

This is a huge fork designed not for eating, but for pitching hay. Now that the modern era is upon us, and the total volume of people in the world is larger than the total volume of hay, it's only natural that the primary use of the pitchfork would change to that of a weapon.

Type: weapon (1-handed spear)
Power: 125
Muscle Required: 47
Selling Price: 130 Meat.
Enchantment:
Melee Damage +9

Monster Stats

Using the Cerebral Crossbow I have confirmed that the only monster w/ an elemental defense is the empty suit of armour. Which is Spooky.

Also, the safe hit range for this area is somewhere between 115 and 120.

- I too noticed the Suit of Empty Armor has Spooky Affinity. Though my approach was to use Stream.

You cast a Stream of hot Ketchup at your opponent, which does 64 damage. <---double damage from a hot spell.--Feldhorn 19:52, 20 September 2006 (CDT)

-

In case anyone with a better understanding of initiative/moxie make-up than me can use this info, I'm getting first shot in battle, but being unable to hit. My moxie is 77 and I've got Overdeveloped Sense of Self Preservation. (initiative +20%?) Equiping Stainless Steel Slacks makes my Moxie 86, gives me another +15% init and let me get the jump on, fail to hit, then dodge the Guy with the Pitchfork once, then get clobbered. (Which means they're doing more than 36 damage in a hit, but I didn't note exactly...) --CateranLlama 00:13, 21 September 2006 (CDT)

NEW SKILL!

Muscle classes that have acquired the quest item "Tattered Wolf Standard" from the Bedroom upstairs will acquire "Snarl of the Timberwolf" when selecting the First Knight option in the "Out in the Garden" adventure.

I was retarded and didn't save the text from the result. But the knight was happy to see me and took the standard, then taught me the skill.

Snarl of the Timberwolf is is a 10MP skill, and gives a 5 adventure effect of the same name. It seems to boost damage by 10 (Spooky).

The text for the effect is thus-

"You're imbued with the ferocity and fearfulness of one of the spookiest of the arctic animals. Anything that's scared of scary stuff had best watch out."

The image used for the effect is the same as the one used for Wolf Mask. --Ralph The Wonder Llama 20:16, 20 September 2006 (CDT)Ralph The Wonder Llama

Low stat message

As you near the gallery, you suddenly realize that you don't actually care about art enough to risk your neck to see it. Maybe you should swing back by here when you're a little more sophisticated.

(You must have at least 68 Moxie to adventure here.)

--Aardvark (Talk | Contribs) 03:42, 23 September 2006 (CDT)

Luck adventure

Is it only me or anybody else that have got under 200 muscle substat points?

Out in the Garden

Is the Out in the Garden adventure considered combat or non-combat - i.e. does it appear more often with Sonata of Sneakiness, Ring of Conflict, deodorant etc.? Komet 04:14, 15 October 2006 (CDT)

Yes--StrawberryLetter23 09:13, 2 July 2007 (CDT)

Meat Drops

Something that I've noticed for several ascensions now: the meat drops in the gallery seem to be lower than what is listed here. I haven't actually logged them for long, but so far with 0% modifier I'm only getting 83-103 from the pitchfork guy, and 168-211 from the bull. The data on the pages say 93-110 and 189-280 for those, so the current figures seem to be somewhat inaccurate. Anyone else noticed the same, or do I maybe have some negative modifier that I don't know about? --Andemon 05:33, 16 March 2007 (CDT)

Post NS-13

Anyone have any idea what the nerf there is, yet? They did say that they gallery was gonna be less important to speed runs now, I smell a nerf... --Jimfromtx 17:17, 26 June 2007 (CDT)

Heh, you've done a good job of avoiding the whining on various forums, then. Everybody hates this. --Jonrock 17:42, 26 June 2007 (CDT)

The antiques nerf is a little annoying, however, combat frequency has been changed to a higher percentage rate as well. It is much more difficult to get non-combat adventures.--StrawberryLetter23 09:13, 2 July 2007 (CDT)

A little spading report on my assertion: 180 adventures spent in Gallery. -15% combat gear and spells yielded 39 non-combat adventures. This gives me 21.66% Non-combat. Without the gear and spells I imagine that this zone is now 94-95% Combat.--StrawberryLetter23 08:33, 10 July 2007 (CDT)

Same here, decrease in noncombats according to this inaccurately small sample of data: Adventures spent: 200. Modifiers: -15% combat (Sonata, Smooth and =oConflict). Encounters: Noncombat vs Combat = 46 vs 154 = 23% vs 77%, indeed suggesting that it has changed to an approximate 95% combat zone. --Nappa 03:56, 17 July 2007 (CDT)

More to support higher combat% 200 adventures with +20% noncombat (Sonata, Smooth, Ring of Conflict, Fresh Scent) 15 Lourve, 28 Painting Seems to suggest that not only has %combat increased, but Louve is only 1/3 chance. --Trek Terp 11:43, 07 August 2007 (PST)

So is it even worth it to go to the Gallery anymore? It seems to me that at least when you play a Moxie class, you can skip it entirely. Better to go straight to the Ballroom. Well you have to unlock that one as well, but you can save some turns on unlocking the Gallery. Opinions? --Mr Crac 06:56, 13 August 2007 (CDT)

Just one day's worth of data, but spending 217 adventures in the Gallery with -25% combats (conflict, smooth, sonata, fresh scent, and the ballroom song) netted me 111 noncombats, 58 of which were louvres. Then again, it could be because I'm level 24. --Quietust (t|c) 08:25, 1 November 2007 (CDT)

  • Another day, 289 adventures with -25% combat resulting in 123 noncombats (60 louvres). Combat rate is indeed 75-80%, but louvres are not any less common than the garden. --Quietust (t|c) 08:58, 2 November 2007 (CDT)
