Talk:The Ocean Puzzle
The initial Ideas list was compiled by 'official KoL forum' member JimGamma. It's a list of every idea suggested in the ealry days of the puzzle, but some ideas might require a better explanation or expanding on, as they're mainly very general ideas. According to Riff's comment, one of these ideas should be the correct line of inquiry, but not exactly right. --Melon 06:24, 6 April 2008 (CDT)
I think we can safely remove the drinks-to-get-into-the-cabin thing. It's a joke about getting him drunk, for random deity's sake. --Akatosh 08:52, 6 April 2008 (CDT)
- But then, immediately shooting down ideas with "nah, that's not it" is exactly what Riff said people did when they were gettng close to the answer. Crystallina 15:10, 6 April 2008 (CDT)
- Maybe that's just what he wants us to think! I wouldn't put it past him. A more relevant criticism would be "exactly what mechanic do you propose would let you even do this?" --Flargen 15:15, 6 April 2008 (CDT)
- I dunno if this is related, but theres other info in the wiki regarding undiscovered Pirate content. On several J&S shows, the following info was mentioned:
- There's enough stuff floating around that you no longer have to adventure at the Poop Deck to get access to the undiscovered content. (this was way after the cursed outfit was discovered)
- If the undiscovered pirate content is trophy related, solving it requires unoptimized game play (Jick's reference to the 10 undiscovered trophies)
- There was a thread involving combining the images of various cursed keys & chests that Riff chimed in and said that the undiscovered content had nothing to do w/ those images. --Grimdel 21:48, 6 April 2008 (CDT)
- Riff gave you a huge clue. He said people made comments that never got followed up on that were very very close. If you want to get this all solved, go back through the 2 or 3 threads that dealt with the not plinth and plinth threads and make a list of things that were blown off. Test them all and someone wins a nice prize. The fact that it's been pointed out, and yet not acted upon surprises me. Enjoy. :) --Ashallond 22:08, 6 April 2008 (CDT)
- But we are acting on stuff, and getting nowhere. Crystallina 22:33, 6 April 2008 (CDT)
- Has anyone actually compiled a full list of things to look at or is everyone just trying to pick the ideas out on their own? --Ashallond 19:58, 7 April 2008 (CDT)
- I believe this was Melon's intent with the page. He/she combed the previous threads and compiled them into the suggestions. Also, it may be worth noting that Riff said, "at least a couple of times." You could rule out one time suggestions.--ChunkTug 02:41, 9 April 2008 (CDT)
- JimGamma, one of the forum members, actually created the list just before I made the page. They supposedly went through previous threads and just noted every idea that had been mentioned. I've not yet had time to go through all 4 threads on the subject and look at every single idea, and sort them by how relevant they may be based on what we know now, but it's on my to-do list. So some of the stuff on that list may have been spaded before and can be ruled out, but until I go through the old threads, we won't know. I made this page so people would stop suggesting the same things over and over again, which is what seemed to be happening, and to organise things a bit better. --Melon 06:32, 9 April 2008 (CDT)
- I did go all the way through the two threads, and put in everything I could find that appeared relevant. It wasn't easy because a lot of it was suggested due to plinth-related stuff, so if anyone wants to go back and check my work, please do, you may think some things need to be mentioned that I missed out. --JimGamma 22:36, 11 April 2008 (GMT)
Hey, I noticed something. The item used on the Toothy pirate starts with a T. The item used on the clingy pirate starts with a C. Same with the G pirate. I think the witty rapier is the W item. Anyone else agree? --Jeram 02:58, 7 April 2008 (CDT)
- Along these lines, in each part of the ship there's a pirate that drops a weapon that's part of it's name. Curmudgeonly pirate drops curmudgel, Grassy pirate drops a grassy cutlass, Witty pirate drops a witty rapier. No corresponding weapon for the Barrr, though.--Shima 23:11, 22 April 2008 (CDT)
That's right, there was a spading project early on trying to find out what combat items had special effects on certain pirates, and those were the result (as well as valuable trinkets against chaty pirates). I think it got spaded pretty well, and that was all that was found. Also, we shouldn't need to adventure on the Poop Deck anymore, so even if there was one for a pirate on the Poop Deck, it wouldn't matter anyway. I guess I'll remove that one from the list. --Melon 15:15, 7 April 2008 (CDT)
Regarding the quote "Solving this puzzle no longer requires adventuring on The Poop Deck, but this does not mean that it does not require the use of items obtained from sailing on the ocean..." Maybe it is not just about the items you can get from the ocean but the information that has been spaded on it. By that I mean the mapping project and where all the coordinate points appear. Wasn't there a theory that the patterns "spell" something or that there is a math puzzle in there somewhere? --Darkwolf 09:35, 11 April 2008 (CDT)
Perhaps the four special pirate items can be combined together or with some other item(s)? If, for instance, the witty rapier is the fourth item (it starts with a w), the other items might be smithed with it? --Rapped Scallion 15:38, 11 April 2008 (CDT)
I don't know if anyone has mentioned this, and it is probably a very ridiculous idea, but I have to try. Has anyone tried adventuring with the exotic parrot? Parrot's are a large part of the pirate lore and what not, it might by worth a try. It makes more sense than the blackbird anyways. --Braska 19:34, 11 April 2008 (CDT)
- Another idea has come to mind... has anyone seen yet if the cursed keys/chests could be untinkered? I was thinking about the abridged dictionary, and it came to me that is no one has tried it, maybe you can get two separate items, such as "Curse" and "Generic Pirate Key." The curse would give an effect needed to access the content, and the key may finally open the sunken chest, and we would need whatever item was inside. Just random thoughts though... --Braska 09:10, 23 April 2008 (CDT)
Blackbird
- "Pirate ship with blackbird?" I've put thousands of adventures in on the poopdeck with my blackbird; enough adventures to get me all the pieces of thirteen to get the cursed outfit. I've not noticed anything special. I've only done ordinary amounts of adventuring elsewhere in the cove, and -- of course -- none belowdecks. --Club (#66669) (Talk) 13:59, 7 April 2008 (CDT)
- I guess we could rule this one out. I don't want to seem like I'm trying to push ideas out without complete spading, but I'm not sure if some of the ideas could ever be decided as "complete". I'll take this one off the list, and if there's any objection, it can always be put back. --Melon 15:15, 7 April 2008 (CDT)
Riff's Brick
Riff's brick in Hangks says "The secret word is marmalade", I saw some testing was done with the Jar of "Creole Lady" marrrmalade, but saw nothing about the other marmalade reference. I stumbled upon this while eating today in the course of my BM loop:
You eat the creamsicle. The other end of the stick says "you'd think marrrmalade, but actually it's vaseline. No one's sure why." What a crappy joke.
Maybe I know why? So I look into Vaseline and lo and Behold... Sand in the Vaseline... a semi rare adventure that gives a bottle of rhinoceros hormones... Mayhaps this is the needed item in some way.
I'm probably totally off here but why not, It is fully in game so it could be a first step. --Neotemplar 19:11, 20 April 2008 (CDT)
Actually I though about it a little more and noticed that the sand in the Vaseline may be rainbow sand, bricks of sand, or handfuls of sand. --Neotemplar 19:23, 20 April 2008 (CDT)
- That sounds incredibly, incredibly good.
I think you may be on to something big.
What could that mean? I did some quick Google-fu on popsicle stick jokes containing the word "marmalade", but got nothing. Nothing for normal jokes, either. What would we expect to be "marrrmalade"? What a pirate likes to put on toast?
Eww.
When it comes to Vaseline, there's that adventure in the Frat House, but there's also the Oil of Parrrlay item. The oil is about the closest thing to Vaseline I can think of in-game, and it was also added with the pirate revamp, further supporting Riff's "look in the giant pit that just opened in your backyard" comment.
Damn, if I were only a few levels higher, so I could mess around with stuff. --Southwest 19:52, 20 April 2008 (CDT)
- Used the Jar of Creole Lady marrrmalade and the Oil of Parrrlay and adventured for 3 adventures in the Bar, no immediate results. Also tried cooking the Oil of Parrrlay and toast together via the hot stuffing method, and no results. --Shima 21:26, 20 April 2008 (CDT)
•What about running with Jar of Creole Lady marrrmalade and Rhino Hormones together? May as well throw on parley for good measure too. That'd cover all bases. I'd try it myself cept I'm in BM.--Neotemplar 22:57, 20 April 2008 (CDT)
The song Lady Marmalade featured prominently in the movie Moulin Rouge which appears in the Kingdom as The Rogue Windmill in The Worm Wood. Maybe use some of the new pirate items in the Worm Wood areas? The Stately Pleasure Dome does include the Death is a Boat adventure which itself is a Pirates of the Caribbean reference. Maybe adventure there with one of the Pirate items or effects? -- Tanstaafl 12:14, 23 April 2008 (CDT)
- Doubtful. The Worm Wood is Mr. Store content, which is essentially extra, optional content. A puzzle requiring Mr. Store things would go against the ideals of the game--this is going to be something anyone can access. --TechSmurf 12:20, 23 April 2008 (CDT)
- But anyone CAN access the worm wood, simply by purchasing a tiny bottle of absinthe... --Hellion 13:41, 23 April 2008 (CDT)
- I had a thought about the layout of the islands that the tiki idols were on. If there are words in them, wouldn't we be (standing on the mainland) looking at them upside down and backwards from how they're shown on the wiki's map? --Valliant 16:47, 20 May 2008 (CDT)
- Maybe I'm being too skeptical, but Riff said that people were close to the answer pretty early on, before anyone mentioned the brick, and no one had mentioned marmalade (why the hell would they?). In a perfect game, I don't think the solution to the puzzle would even involve knowing that Riff wrote it, right? Working backwards, can anyone actually link the word marmalade (or else Riff and Brick) to the pirate content? If not, then I think this whole train of thought should be abandoned. Subbawtski 08:35, 1 June 2008 (CDT)
- Before marmalade is abandoned, has anyone tried having the "Savage Beast Inside" effect active while receiving the predictably-timed Cap'm adventures (such as "A Fledgling Pirate Is You")?--StDoodle 07:43, 3 June 2008 (CDT)
Random thought
Has anyone tried fiddling around with the rainbow stuff in the vicinity of the King's prism?--Nahtmmm 14:34, 9 June 2008 (CDT)
What about the ship's navigator on the event "O Cap'm My Cap'm?" He doesn't talk like a pirate apparently, and they give a good description of him, so maybe we should try to find out who he is or where he's from? Just a random thought--PcPirate 12:26 6 August 2008 (GMT)
I'm noting the lack of discussion over the seemingly highly relevant makeshift S.C.U.B.A. gear.--Chugsworth 03:30, 9 August 2008 (CDT)
Looking at the Riff's ocean puzzle image makes me really think the solution is in the various island adventure texts. We need to follow fairly obscure logical links between comments on the various islands and put them together into other obscure logical links. For example, and this is a terrible example but, what if the bamboo espresso machine mention in Gilligan's Island and the bamboo bench reference in Cast Away are telling you to get a clue from the bamboo bokuto. I know this isn't much help but it might spark someone to think in a different way...--Anakha 16:14, 9 August 2008 (CDT)
