While currency in the Kingdom of Loathing has not always been the meat standard (beans were used in the past, although there is no strong evidence that suggests beans had much sway outside Cobb's Knob), it has remained the way people exchange goods and services in the Mall and the trade channel since the mass influx of adventurers to the Kingdom to rout the Naughty Sorceress first began.
Over the centuries, veins of meat deep in the earth have been transformed into the three meat gems, which were mined by the Pork Elves and hoarded by King Ralph XI, and which are highly treasured by adventurers for both their aesthetics and magical properties. More mysteriously, rumors of an incredibly dense meat gem abound by people who claim it is guarded by a bug-like creature made entirely of meat in the Cobb's Knob Treasury.
Sometimes, meat appears in players' coffers for no apparent reason, wreaking havoc with the economy. This phenomenon is usually confined to few adventurers who slip their greedy little fingers into the Kingdom's underlying structure, if you believe Serenity. However, such exploiters caused the collapse of the economy on Porktember 3, Kingdom Year 6. This newfound wealth attracted the attention of the Penguin Mafia...
