The Dusk Zone

The next room in Fernswarthy's Basement is just sufficiently lit to make your eyes hurt as they strain to see across it. As soon as you cross the threshold into the room, a square portal appears at your eye level in front of you, and a disembodied voice begins to speak.

"You are entering another dimension... a dimension not of sight and sound, but of really weird stuff that usually turns out to be predictably ironic," the voice booms, as you glimpse hourglasses, blinking eyeballs, spirals, and star fields through the portal. "That signpost up ahead: The Dusk Zone."

The portal disappears, and in its place you see a pedestal with a cocktail sitting on it. As you approach it, the voice begins again, somewhat more quietly:

"An adventurer enters a room in Fernswarthy's Basement," it says. You look over your shoulder and locate the speaker -- it's an average-looking man in his forties, wearing a slightly disheveled business suit. You ignore him and focus on the tasty beverage.

"The adventurer approaches the pedestal," he says. "He's only looking for a cocktail; he just wants a little booze to help him through the day. Little does he know that he's got himself a corner booth in that neighborhood bar known as...The Dusk Zone."

Doo Doo Doo Doo (1)

"The adventurer picks up the cocktail and places it in <his/her> inventory," the man says. "<He/She> rolls <his/her> eyes at me and starts to walk out of the room. <He/She> flips me the bird as he[sic] leaves, never suspecting that that particular bird will not fly in...The Dusk Zone."

You walk out of the room, hearing the man's voice grow ever fainter as you leave. "The adventurer takes a step, and then another step...and then another...never suspecting that..."

Man, what a weird guy.
