This section is for a brief guide to the challenge modes that are coming out once a quarter. The current challenge will be presented here, older ones will be archived on subpages:
Current challenge: Fall 2011, Way of the Surprising Fist.
Past Challenges: Summer 2011, Bees Hate You. Guide Here.
Rules
Every challenge mode has rules. Here are the rules for WotSF:
- You cannot equip any weapons/offhand items.
- All meat-dropping monsters have had their base meat drop set to about 12. +Meat % modifiers still work, but only on this much smaller value.
- If you autosell items, you do not get the meat. Similarly, items such as Warm Subject gift certificate do not provide their usual meat.
- Most non-combat adventures which provide meat have been eliminated. Notable exceptions are Finally, the Payoff and the choice adventures in all four zones of the Cyrpt. Also, the reward meat for completing quests has been eliminated.
- You must acquire at least 5 Teachings of the Fist by spending 12 turns in the zones listed. You can only obtain one Teachings per zone, but it does not matter in what order you choose the zones; using a Teachings will grant you the next Surprising Fist Technique that you do not already know.
Basic Strategy
The inability to use weapons and shields would appear to make combat difficult, but the skills granted by Teachings of the Fist are extremely powerful. Drunken Baby Style in particular does a ton of damage against anything that's not resistant to physical damage. Perming Kung Fu Hustler is extremely important, as it will provide useful intrinsic effects throughout the entire run.
The lack of meat is also troublesome, since there are required purchases: 500 meat for The Big Book of Pirate Insults, 1000 meat for the abridged dictionary, and 1000 meat for two of the Palindome items. You may also wish to buy things such as a Dramatic™ range, Queue Du Coq cocktailcrafting kit, or tenderizing hammer. Since you're getting the Knob Goblin Harem Girl Disguise (KGE outfit is unequippable due to the weapon), be sure to get the Finally, the Payoff adventure once per day. You also should take the meat choice in all of the Cyrpt zones except for The Defiled Cranny. If you desperately need to farm for meat, you can fight as many rats as you want at the Rat Faucet in the Tavern Cellar. With a familiar that drops meat for the first three rounds in the Crown of Thrones, such as the Knob Goblin Organ Grinder, and a meat drop familiar out, along with the fact that you can sell whiskers to the Pretentious Artist, you can make about 100 meat per adventure. Even though you probably won't be buying any MP restorers, you shouldn't run into any problems if you usually have a Megadrone in your CoT and are running Salamanderenity.
The zones that drop Teachings of the Fist are areas that are typically ignored during speedy ascensions. Therefore, using free runaways, hipster fights, and arrowed monsters are advisable because these count towards the 12 turns that must be spent in each zone. While it is not strictly necessary to obtain any of the scrolls before the Star Key test in the lair, the combat skills are extremely powerful and the fifth skill, Worldpunch allows you to mine at level 8 and save pulls that would otherwise go towards ore and goat cheese. Muscle classes can simultaneously acquire the Teachings in the Haunted Conservatory while they unlock the Haunted Gallery. If you choose A Barroom Brawl, you may be able to acquire a beer lens or two. However, you need a box to do anything with the beer lens, which would require making your Epic Weapon to unlock The "Fun" House. This zone does drop a Teachings, and Knoll signs can have Innabox craft the weapon, eliminating the need to buy a hammer.
Since the Nuns quest is not feasible ( unless you have about 4000 turns to spare), you want to do the War as a Frat. Even if you use the chaos butterfly trick, the dooks will take more turns than they will save, so only complete Arena, Junkyard, Sonofa, and Filthworms. Plan on spending 68 turns on the actual battlefield (including the first turn in which you get the PADL phone).
