What's a 'Level', Anyway?
The stairway down from the Dungeoneer's Association turn out to be very long. Very, very long. It ends in a dark stone tunnel (one of the dungeoneers left some dungeoneering kits at the entrance, fortunately) that takes a winding path for at least a mile before you reach another staircase, the steps carved directly out of the living rock. This staircase also turns out to be very long. Very very very... anyway.
Cave:
Eventually, you reach the bottom, and step into a huge cavern, glittering with crystalline formations and luminescent fungi. You stroll around for a bit, enjoying the sights, and then find a cave entrance that opens into... sunlight? You're absolutely certain the cavern floor didn't slope upward enough to take you back to the surface. You should be miles underground, and yet here you are, standing in the mouth of a cave in a rocky plain, looking up at a blue cloud-filled sky and what appears to be, as far as you can tell, the sun. How is this even possible? Did you come out on the other side of the world?
City:
Eventually, you reach the bottom, and step out of the mouth of a cave, to find... what the heck? You're standing at the edge of a massive ruined city, miles across, with crumbling stone towers and spires that reach up to the sky. A sky that, insofar as you can identify one on sight, appears to have a sun in it. How is this even possible? Did you come out on the other side of the world?
Desert:
Eventually, you reach the bottom, and step out of the mouth of a cave, blinking in bright sunlight. What... what the heck? You're standing in a huge desert, with rolling sand dunes in every direction underneath a blistering hot sun. How is this even possible? Did you come out on the other side of the world?
'Forest':
Eventually, you reach the bottom, and step out of the mouth of a cave, into... what the heck? You're standing at the edge of a huge dark forest, with ancient gnarled oak trees that form a canopy so thick, it nearly blots out the sun. Wait... sun? You climb a tree and confirm that, yes, there does somehow appear to be a sun up there, or at least something enough like a sun to fool your eyes. How is this even possible? Did you come out on the other side of the world?
Mountains:
Eventually, you reach the bottom, and step out of the mouth of a cave, blinking in bright sunlight. What... what the heck? You're standing on a rocky outcropping in the middle of a huge and expansive mountain range. Looking up, you see snow on the peaks, and above them, a blue, cloud-filled sky and what appears -- as far as you can tell -- to be the sun. How is this even possible? Did you come out on the other side of the world?
Plains:
Eventually, you reach the bottom, and step out of the mouth of a cave, blinking in bright sunlight. What... what the heck? You're standing in a huge grassy plain, with gently rolling hills stretching off in every direction, and even a tree here and there. And above you, in a blue sky filled with very convincing-looking clouds, is what appears -- as far as you can tell -- to be the sun. How is this even possible? Did you come out on the other side of the world?
Sea:
Eventually, you reach the bottom, and step out of the mouth of a cave, blinking in bright sunlight. What... what the heck? You're standing on a beach, on the shore of an... ocean? I mean, it could be a lake, but if so you can't see the edge of it. You can see an island here and there, off in the distance. One of them appears to have a palm tree. And above you, in a blue cloud-filled sky, is a bright light that you can only identify as the sun. How is this even possible? Did you come out on the other side of the world?
Is this... %areaname%? That walkthru seemed to be using %areaname% to mean the overall country, or continent, or world that %videogame% was set in. That would make this %dungeonname%, the %dungeontype% that makes up Level 1 of the game.
What is going on?
Looking around, you decide that the second nerd must have been right -- this place is too expansive for someone to have constructed it as some sort of very specific game-themed amusement park. Someone else must have been here previously, and sold the records of their trip to the video game studio, or something. Which means that the walkthru probably isn't wholly accurate.
There might still be a boss, though. %bossname%, the walkthru called him. You do like a good boss fight.
With a shrug, you pick up a dungeoneering kit and start off into the desert to see what you can find.
