Apprivoisez la tortue

Apprivoisez la tortue

Type: Combat
MP Cost: 3
Source: Equipping a fouet de tortue-dressage
Price: N/A
Class: N/A
Level: N/A
Effect: Breaks the brainwashing of guard turtles
When Used:
You snap the fouet de tortue-dressage over the turtle's head with a resounding crack!

It doesn't seem particularly impressed. Unless by 'impressed' you mean 'annoyed'.
  • Against a French guard turtle, or post-nemesis guard turtle (first time):
Its eyes widen momentarily in surprise, then it frowns and redoubles its attacks.
  • Against a French guard turtle, or post-nemesis guard turtle (second time):
It blinks rapidly in shock, then growls and charges at you again.
  • Against a French guard turtle, or post-nemesis guard turtle (third time):
Momentarily stunned, the turtle shakes its head from side to side. It recovers quickly, however, and continues to attack.
  • Against a French guard turtle, or post-nemesis guard turtle (fourth time):
The turtle howls at you, trembling with anger and confusion.
  • Against a French guard turtle (fifth time):
The turtle appears to suffer some kind of mental breakdown -- it collapses to the ground, sobbing. You help it to its feet and escort it out of the compound.
  • Against a post-nemesis guard turtle (fifth time):
The turtle appears to suffer some kind of mental breakdown -- it collapses to the ground, sobbing. You help it to its feet and escort it out of the compound.
The turtle blinks at you with gratitude for freeing it from its brainwashing, and trudges off over the horizon.
...Eventually.

Notes

  • Only usable against guard turtles.
  • French for "tame the tortoise."
  • Every successful snap increases a guard turtle's attack power by 40% until you manage to un-brainwash it, making a multi-round stun after the first or second snap a useful strategy. Likewise, the Untamed Turtle familiar, which is received earlier in the quest, acts as a superpotato for Turtle Tamers and can block the attacks.
  • The turtle must survive the battle. If it is defeated in the round you managed to un-brainwash it (by a familiar or passive damage, for example), it doesn't count as being saved.
  • Freeing a guard turtle after defeating Stella leaves you eligible for Cold-Blooded Warm Fuzzies.
  • Having Eau de Tortue in effect skips the first whipping message. It only takes 4 whippings to un-brainwash them with turtle pheromones, instead of 5.
  • Taming a turtle does not kill it. No stats are gained and no items drop.
