Today is Yuletide!
Roast marshmallows and listen to spooky ghost stories in Seaside Town!

Yuletide celebrates the feast of St. Yule "Be Sorry" Brenner. Brenner used to go from house to house in Seaside Town throwing flaming logs through the windows of sinners, to remind them of the flames of hell and encourage them to repent. After Brenner committed suicide by stabbing himself repeatedly in the back, then throwing himself to wild dogs, the denizens of Loathing began the custom of gathering around a flaming log every Dougtember, roasting marshmallows, and telling ghost stories.

  • Yul Brynner was a star of Hollywood and Broadway. Notably, he played the evil robot in WestWorld and the king in the first movie adaptation of the Broadway play, The King and I, where he was the lead for over 2 decades.
  • "Brenner" is the German word for "burner", as applied to the inanimate object. When applied to people, the word "Brenner" means "distiller".
  • The tradition of telling ghost stories around the campfire, while long-standing, was featured in the Nickelodeon show Are You Afraid of the Dark?, with each story beginning as "The Tale of the..."
  • Because many traditions of the real Yuletide have become part of the Christmas (not to be confused with Crimbo) celebration, this may also be a reference to the Christmas song "It's the Most Wonderful Time of the Year", which contains the lyrics "There'll be parties for hosting / marshmallows for toasting / and caroling out in the snow. / There'll be scary ghost stories / and tales of the glories / of Christmases long, long ago."
  • The 2002 mafia movie Analyze That contains this exchange:
Jelly: Anyway, two of the witnesses decided not to testify and the third guy, well, he committed suicide.
Dr. Sobel: How?
Jelly: He stabbed himself in the back four times and threw himself off a bridge.
  • The "Yul Be sorry" and the reference to "flaming logs" references the last time Yul Brenner appeared on TV. He was dying of lung cancer and gave a very impassioned appeal to never smoke. For a few years it was used as a public service announcement to get Americans to stop smoking.
