There are nine potions that come from the Dungeons of Doom. These are:

When Used

Each of these potions give one of nine possible results. No two potions give the same effects, and each player will get a different series of effects. The possible effects are:

You drink the <type> potion. It tastes like liquid fire!
You gain 1-3 Drunkenness.
You drink the <type> potion.
HPYou gain 14−16 hit points.
MPYou gain 14−16 Mana Points.

In Combat

You throw the <type> potion at your opponent. It shatters against him. He looks like he feels better.
You drink the <type> potion.
You acquire an effect: Confused
(duration: 20 Adventures)
You drink the <type> potion.
You acquire an effect: Izchak's Blessing
(duration: 10 Adventures)
You drink the <type> potion.
You acquire an effect: Object Detection
(duration: 10 Adventures)
You drink the <type> potion.
You acquire an effect: Sleepy
(duration: 20 Adventures)
You drink the <type> potion.
You acquire an effect: Strange Mental Acuity

You drink the <type> potion.
You acquire an effect: Strength of Ten Ettins

In Combat

You throw the <type> potion at your opponent. It shatters against him. He looks much stronger than before.
You drink the <type> potion.
You acquire an effect: Teleportitis

Pre-NS13

When used in combat, all potions gave the following message:

Just kidding. These won't actually be combat-usable until NS13 rolls out.

Notes

  • A given player will always gain the same result from the same potion, during a single ascension.
  • Each potion's effect is randomly reassigned at the beginning of each new ascension, from a set of 25 hardcoded combinations. It is possible to determine which of the 25 sets is active in your current ascension by following the procedure outlined in this table. The spading process leading to this discovery can be seen in this thread. Note that after NS13 the table is no longer accurate
  • Smoky potions post-NS13 will now give drunkenness, as pre-NS13 they did not.
  • If you are on the Teetotaler or Oxygenarian path and attempt the drink the Drunkenness potion, you get this message: "You drink the (the drunkenness potion name) potion.This smells like liquid fire. You decide not to drink it." The potion does not disappear from your inventory.
  • These are often called "bang potions" because "bang" is a common programmer term for the exclamation mark (!).

References

  • These potions refer to the computer game NetHack. In NetHack and other roguelike games, you acquire various potions whose appearances change each time you start a new game. Most such games represent potions with the '!' character because it notionally resembles a potion bottle (albeit an upside-down one).
  • The drunkenness granting effect (and message that follows) is a reference to the "potion of booze" from NetHack, which makes you confused for a few turns, giving the message "Ooph! This tastes like liquid fire!"
