Talk:The Haunted Library

Before Unlocking
You try to enter the Haunted Library, but the door is locked. I guess this particular information doesn't want to be free.
- I've added that, as well as the "Information wants to be free" reference, to the page. --Bastard of Disastard 16:22, 23 September 2006 (CDT)
Also, for some reason, my "last adventure" link was to the haunted library before unlocking it, and when I tried to follow that link to adventure there before it was unlocked, I got the text "Seriously. It's locked." -Tannenzaepfle 00:41, 15 April 2008 (CDT)
Insufficient Main Stat
As you get near the library, you start thinking about all of the times you've been hurt because of libraries. Like the time that librarian broke your knees because you couldn't pay your overdue book fines, and the time that you tripped over a drawer that had been left open in the card catalog and got a black eye.
Maybe you should come back when you're a little tougher, so that you don't get hurt again.
(You must have at least 40 *Main stat* to adventure here.)
- Oh, I just added this, it may need cleaning up a bit though. --Damuna 13:35, 21 September 2006 (CDT)
- Looks like someone is going to have to take another look at this, I'm adventuing in the library right now with a main stat of 38.
Monsters
Has anyone ever gotten a Stuffing Golem in the Library? Because I did.--Nataniel 13:47, 7 April 2007 (CDT)
- That would be because it's the Feast of Boris Froodian 13:53, 7 April 2007 (CDT)
The writing desk will also drop the disintegrating quill pen --Sors 13:22, 20 September 2006 (CDT)
Using a Disintergrating Quill with an Inkwell and Tattered Scrap of Paper in your inventory will produce Scroll of Ancient Forbidden Unspeakable Evil
- Scroll of Ancient Forbidden Unspeakable Evil
Combat Item - Dealt 52 fire damage to monster and 5 spooky damage to me.

Books To Read
'Can we confirm that it's required to read certain chapters before (for instance) acquiring the key in the conservatory (chapter two in 'The Fall of the House of Spookyraven')?
--Mordengaard 08:35, 20 September 2006 (CDT)
I adventured in the conservatory for 100+ adventures before unlocking the library and reading a few chapers here and there. Almost immediately upon returning to the conservatory, I got the crocodile adventure with the key. I couldn't tell you definitively which chapter, but I think we can guess which one. :-) --Boba Feta 09:47, 20 September 2006 (CDT)
- I can definitively confirm that it's Chapter 2 of "Fall" - as that's the only thing I read at all, and got the key with my first (and only) adventure int eh Conservatory. ^_^ --Bork 11:42, 20 September 2006 (CDT)
Book: The Rise of the House of Spookyraven Chapter 1: The Arrival
This chapter tells the story of young Lord Spookyraven's arrival, by boat, in Seaside Town. Some sources say he came from Distant Lands, while others claim he hailed from Parts Unknown.
All of the sources agree on one thing, however: He was really, really creepy, and his creepiness was eclipsed only by his eccentricity.
He spent the first few years of his time in Seaside Town living in a series of squalid apartments, attempting (unsuccessfully) to make his fortune.
He eventually discovered that he had a knack both for dealing in rare books and for grooming animals, and he consequently opened Spookyraven's Hard-to-Find Bookstore and Hard-to-Wash Pet Salon on the Right Side of the Tracks.
Chapter 2: The Manor
Elevated by the success of his bookstore and pet salon, Lord Spookyraven became a pillar of the Seaside Town community. A pillar that was composed mostly of huge piles of Meat. Having achieved both popularity and wealth, he began to cast about for the one thing missing from his life -- love.
In a nightclub on the Wrong Side of the Tracks, he met Lady Spookyraven. They took the astonishing coincidence of their names to be an unmistakable sign that they should marry, which they did almost immediately.
Lord Spookyraven then leveraged his considerable fortunes to build the finest mansion Seaside Town had ever seen, a sprawling 8-room edifice he named "Spookyraven Manor."
The pitter-patter of little feet was soon to follow, as Lord Spookyraven sired twin children, Stephen and Elizabeth.
Chapter 3: Things Get Weird
As the earnings from Lord Spookyraven's bookstore and pet salon increased, so did the size and depth of his personal collection of books. Historians believe that Lord Spookyraven stumbled upon his first text of Ancient Forbidden Unspeakable Evil by accident, but are all agreed that once he got a taste for it, it fit him like a glove. Historians then apologized for mixing food and clothing metaphors.
By the time Stephen and Elizabeth were five years old, Lord Spookyraven had become more and more reclusive and distant from his family, spending nearly all of his time in his library, poring over ancient tomes.
Book: The Fall of the House of Spookyraven
Chapter 1: Things Get Weirder (provided by Shaventalz)
As Lord Spookyraven retreated further and further into his study of Ancient Forbidden Unspeakable Evil, his business fell into disrepair and soon closed down. Having completely alienated himself from his wife, he is at this time reported to have taken several hundred mistresses.
Some scholars believe this infidelity was the result of the Ancient Forbidden Unspeakable Evil slowly corrupting his sanity, others believe he was simply left directionless and bored after the dissolution of his business. Most of them just want to know how he managed to pull it off, because most scholars are actually really tired of hanging out alone in libraries.
His wife's response to his transgressions was unexpected. She didn't confront him, spiral into depression, or move back in with her mother -- instead she began to collect nightstands. Her collection grew so large that it was said to have displaced every bit of furniture in the Manor's enormous bedroom, including the bed.
Chapter 2: Stephen And Elizabeth (provided by Practitioner of Saucy Arts)
Lord Spookyraven's children Stephen and Elizabeth, like their mother, had some difficulty dealing with their father's descent into madness and philandering. Stephen had inherited his father's love of rare animals, and began to collect pets compulsively.
Though a handful of historians believe he was unusually cruel to them, it is more commonly believed that he simply had a knack for adopting incredibly unlucky animals. Whatever the reason, Spookyraven Manor soon had one of the finest pet cemeteries Seaside Town had ever seen.
Elizabeth cared for neither animals nor books, and instead focused her obsession on the collection of works of fine art. She built up an impressive collection in the Manor's gallery, but that collection was lost to her when one of Stephen's pet alligators swallowed the gallery's key.
Chapter 3: Last Days
Little is known about the last days of the Spookyraven family. The folk of Seaside Town noticed that Lord Spookyraven hadn't been seen in public for several years, which led them to realize that they hadn't seen the rest of the family lately, either, for that matter.
No sign of any of the family members was ever seen again, and Spookyraven Manor gradually became completely dilapidated.
Rumors that the family was sucked into some sort of otherdimensional portal accidentally opened by Lord Spookyraven are usually dismissed as either poppycock or balderdash, though some more modern scholars have begun to believe that they might, in fact, be either hogwash or tommyrot.

Well, given the number of potential recipes in KoL, it might... eventually. I think it's counterproductive to list all the recipes though here - we've covered the format, let's move on or this could become very unwieldy.

Book: Ancient Forbidden Unspeakable Evil, a Love Story
Chapter 1: Tuesdays with Abhorrent Fiends
Apparently the author of this book used to spend his Tuesday afternoons talking to retired nether fiends. Turns out he was onto something -- if you want to know forbidden secrets of the dark and sinister nature of the Universe, those guys are the guys you want to talk to.
You gain 75 Magicalness.
Need confirmation of amount and stat gained
Chapter 2: The Nether Planes on 350 Meat a Day (provided by Spamantha)
This chapter teaches you how to open portals into the Nether Planes, which it claims are a great vacation spot if you're completely tainted by evil.
Unfortunately, you accidentally open such a portal by absent-mindedly reading one of the passages out loud.
Fortunately, this particular portal opens into the middle of a dance party. You have a few hors d'ouevres, make some small talk, and pick up some killer dance moves from a some drunk demons before stepping back through the portal into the Library.
You gain 113 Roguishness.
Chapter 3: Twisted, Curdled, Corrupt Energy and You
This part of the book is written in language so Ancient, so Forbidden, so Unspeakable, and so Evil that you can't make heads or tails of it. When you try, it just sort of hurts your brain.
You lose 14 hit points. (spooky damage)
- NOTE--Reading this book if you have the English to A. F. U. E. Dictionary (the Sauceror item from the Bedroom adventure, if you know what I'm talking about) give you the skill Scarysauce, a buff for 10mp that I'm assuming deals spooky damage to monsters that attack you, haven't gotten a chance to check it out yet. Clover Adventure
Adventure Results: Dust to Dust
As you're wandering through the Haunted Library, you sneeze. The sneeze dislodges a huge cloud of dust from the bookshelf next to you, which gets in your nose, causing you to sneeze again.
A chain reaction involving about twenty sneezes, the details of which I won't bore you with, ensues. However, the dust must've absorbed some of the mystical properties of the books it had collected on, because you feel much smarter and more Mystical for having inhaled it.
Your ten-leaf clover disappears in a puff of smoke.
You gain 93 Wizardliness.
ps. I'm a lvl 14 Sauceror, 188 base myst. I'm assuming that will be useful info later when people formulate the gains. Either way I'm done wasting clovers there.--Practitioner of Saucy Arts 02:29, 20 September 2006 (CDT)

References
I recognize several of the references in this area:
- Rise/Fall of the House of Spookyraven: The Fall of the House of Usher by Edgar Allen Poe
- To Serve Man . . . Delicious Cocktails: An episode of The Twilight Zone called "To Serve Man", about an alien race that comes to Earth. They seem kind enough, and tell the people of Earth that they wish only to serve Man, in accordance with the main text of their culture (a book called To Serve Man). It turns out, however, that the book is a cookbook!
- Better Haunted Houses and Conservatories Cookbook: Better Homes and Gardens
- Anything to do with ancient, unspeakable, forbidden lore: Any book by H. P. Lovecraft (he was renowned for writing exceedingly creepy stories about Things Man Was Not Meant To Know)
--PFC Walker 10:01, 20 September 2006 (CDT)
- Tuesdays With Abhorrent Fiends: Tuesdays With Morrie by Mitch Albom, the writer visits with his retired professor.

Monster Difficulties
The moxie for No Hit numbers written here seem to be far from their proper values. With a moxie of 41 all three creatures dealt 15-21 damage to me.
I agree that at least some of them need tweaking. I'm getting hit (only by the writing desk) with a moxie of 84, for about 9 damage each time. No +ML or anything, either. I'm also seeing more than one message, so it's not just criticals. I'd estimate that I'm only getting hit around 10-20% of the time, though, although I wasn't taking notes.--Adbax 21:23, 26 September 2006 (CDT)
Different Adventures
I'm a level 9 turtle tamer in my 1st ascencion, and I found a "Possessed Can of Cranberry Sauce" to fight with in this library! Is this a semi-rare adventure not listed there?--Sata 11:31, 16 October 2007 (CDT) Or maybe it was because of the special Feast of Boris day?--Sata 11:34, 16 October 2007 (CDT)
- Feast of Boris. --TechSmurf 11:47, 16 October 2007 (CDT)
yeah, disregard that, I suck c**ks.--Sata 11:49, 16 October 2007 (CDT)
Second Floor
Without breaking the staircase, I spent ~30 adventures in the Library and didn't get either bookshelf adventure. After breaking the staircase, I got it in 4 adventures. Might require further testing, but it might be worth noting that you have to break the staircase first to get the bookshelf adventures. --Shima 12:29, 25 March 2008 (CDT)
- It might be, if it were true. Extensive prior testing has been done that demonstrates that you can get the bookshelf adventures without breaking the staircase. (Note, for instance, the special text for when the metal staircase crushes the existing (unbroken) wooden staircase.) --Hellion 13:25, 25 March 2008 (CDT)
- My mistake, then. Just thought it was an odd coincidence.--Shima 13:08, 26 March 2008 (CDT)
Farming
Currently the scroll of ancient forbidden unspeakable evil sells for ~2700 meat in the mall. As a disco bandit in high item find gear while double pickpocketing I'm yielding around 850 meat per turn in this area. I would expect a pastamancer to do much better as the frequency of the 2k autosell non combat is vastly increased as that class. Judge Omega 14:50, 17 May 2010 (UTC)
- "Vastly increased"? Maybe. I've never seen numbers and have started a spading project, but I'm too early into it to have good data. But, yeah, it it's an easy profitable spading effort. :^) --Club (#66669) (Talk) 19:54, 17 May 2010 (UTC)
- My understanding is that the chance to see Melvil Dewey Would Be Ashamed is larger as a Pastamancer until the non-combat is encountered once. After that it is the same for Pastamancers as everyone else. It would be nice to see some spading though since I could easily be mistaken. --Bale 21:36, 17 May 2010 (UTC)
- Jick said it was when that choice rolled out. I'm 3k+ non pastamancer adventures and 250 pastamancer adventures into spading the frequency. See the talk page for early results. --Club (#66669) (Talk) 21:53, 17 May 2010 (UTC)
Pieces of the new text
I have the text for the Quaint And Curious Volume part of Lights Out In The Library, if someone wiser than me could add it in:
You grab a book at random off of the shelf, then move closer to the window so there's enough moonlight to read it. It looks like it's called Proper Stocking Lengths and Patterns for Proper Ladies.
I mean, it's pretty quaint, what with its ideas of appropriate dress, and it's pretty curious that someone would write an entire book on the subject, but in practice the whole thing is pretty dry and boring.
You put the book back on the shelf. A voice hisses in your ear, "the book is upside-down!"
You yelp, and the voice says, "SHHHHH," and you put the book the right way round.
Thankfully, at that point the lights come back on, revealing that you're alone in the room. Brrrr.
