 You're fighting a Shadow <Class>

The Sorceress' evil (and vaguely sexy) voice echoes off the walls around you. "So, you like to play with mirrors, do you? Well, how about a little fire, scarecrow?"

"What?" you shout to the air, unable to locate the source of the voice.

"Er, I mean, you like to play with mirrors, do you? Well, reflect on this for a while!" All of a sudden, you find yourself face to face with what appears to be yourself, only... opposite.

Hit Message(s):

It engages in a bit of shadow dancing. And by 'dancing,' I mean 'kicking your <lower back>.' Ouch! Ugh! Ugh! Argh! Oof! Ugh! Argh! Ugh! Ugh! Argh! (shadow damage)

It does some shadow puppet theater. Its "Adventurer Getting His/Her Ass Handed to Him/Her" is pretty spot-on. Oof! Ugh! Argh! Ouch! Ow! Eek! Ouch! Ouch! Ooh! Ooh! (shadow damage)

It hides on the floor at your feet, making you think it's your regular shadow. Then it kicks you. Eek! Eek! Argh! Ouch! Ooh! Ugh! Ouch! Oof! Ooh! Ugh! (shadow damage)

Notes

• The damage dealt by the shadow is dependent on a character's maximum HP:

Damage = 90-100 + (Max HP/6), rounded up

• Damage Absorption and Damage Reduction has no effect.
• Entangling noodles will not work on the shadow.
  • However, passive stunning effects from equipment (e.g. double-ice cap, shock belt, Jurassic Parka) do work
• The shadow you face is, of course, dependent upon your class and gender, but that should only affect the image and name. The shadow's name will reflect your current title (i.e., a level 13 Disco Bandit would be fighting a Shadow Jive Pillager). The images are as follows:

• You cannot attack your shadow. If you attempt to, you will receive this message:

  Every move you make, it's got a hand up just in time. You find it impossible to hit your own shadow.

  It laughs at you in an eerie parody of your own voice.

• This is unaffected by the effect Comic Violence from gremlin juice.

• All combat familiars are useless against this monster. The Teddy Bear and Origami Towel Crane get special messages when their effect triggers:

  Your teddy bear leaps in front of you and attempts to block your shadow's attack, but your shadow quickly manifests a teddy-bear shaped hole in its abdomen, which <name> falls right through. Tough luck, <name>.

  <name> flaps/flops in front of you and attempts to block your shadow's attack, but your shadow quickly manifests an origami-crane-shaped hole in its abdomen, which <name> falls right through. Tough luck, <name>.

• The Reanimated Reanimator can block the shadow's attack if he has weird parts in stock.

• Although the shadow normally does not miss, effects that force the opponent to miss (such as The Crown of Ed the Undying's Weasel) will cause it to miss, as expected.

• The shadow can block non-healing combat items:

  You approach your shadow and attempt to use the spectre scepter, but it knocks it out of your hands.

• You cannot use any non-healing skills:

  You find yourself unable to use any of your skills against your shadow. There's undoubtedly a very good explanation for this, but there's no time to get into it right now.

• Once you have defeated your shadow, this adventure will no longer recur (it is a one-time adventure).
• This monster cannot be copied.

• Is replaced by Your Lack of Reflection in a Dark Gyffte run.

• Shadow Grey Goos use the same image as Shadow Gelatinous Noob, rather than a black version of the Grey You image.

Strategy

• Only direct healing items and skills will damage your Shadow -- for example red pixel potions, gauze garters, vials of scented massage oil, extra-strength red potions and filthy poultices.
  • Multiple newer heals, such as the New Age healing crystal, will be blocked because the list of actions against the Shadow are a hardcoded list. Some newer healing items will work, however, such as sew-on bandages.
  • The love song of vague ambiguity, which restores HP and inflicts damage, cannot be used.
• The scented massage oil is exceptionally effective due to restoring all your HP, thus dealing damage equal to the HP restored.
• It has exactly 395 HP.
• Its Monster Level cannot be modified. However, if you are on the Bees Hate You path and your current title includes one or more instances of the letter "B" (all Seal Clubbers, Turtle Tamers at level 13, and Disco Bandits at level 15+), the shadow's HP will be boosted accordingly.
• Without Funkslinging, the shadow can be problematic, plan accordingly.
• Defeating the shadow in Kittycore also requires planning.
• Getting the vertebra of the Bonerdagon and making a Bonerdagon necklace out of it can be a great help, as the necklace increases both your Combat Initiative and your max HP.
• Boosting your Combat Initiative by about 150% assures getting the jump.
• It never misses, unless you have the navel ring of navel gazing equipped, a Crimbo P. R. E. S. S. I. E. as your familiar, or have the Everything Is Bananas effect active. Some blocking skills, like Air of Mystery, also work.
