The First Mate's Log in The Old Man's Bathtime Adventure occurs every 5th (or 4th) adventure and will present a random set of four possible choices. The first choice in each set will disappear after being chosen. Choices have different effects on either the monsters in the zone or your inventory. If you have insufficent bubbles or crayons for a particular choice, it will not be shown as well.

Set One

Draw a Monster with a Crayon

The Captain ordered his crew to summon the dreaded crayon-born cannibal, the Cray-Kin. The crew strained to turn the wheel, raising the huge timber up and dropping it with a BOOM, the soundwaves disturbing the fiend's unfathomable slumber. Soon, crayon tentacles were spotted on the horizon.

Adds The Cray-Kin, lose 1 crayon

Build a Bubble Mountain

"Land ho!" the lookout shouted from his perch atop the main mast. And lo, an island made of some strange foamy material had arisen from the unknowable depths. The Captain steered the ship aground onto the island, and the foam dissolved as the ship ran aground upon it.

A ragtag group of castaways staggered to the shore, hungry and skeletal, their eyes burning with fever; they begged to join our crew and the Captain did not refuse them.

Lose 8-10 bubbles, gain 3 crew

Ask Mom for More Bath Toys

The ocean roiled and bubbled beneath the ship, and a small island of foam floated to the top. The crew could see strange trees growing on the island's shore, so the Captain sent a party to investigate. They returned bearing some of the magical foam, reporting that the "trees" were actually sticks of colored wax known as "Crayons." The crew harvested several of them and brought them aboard.

Gain 2 crayons, 8-11 bubbles

Draw a Bunch of Coconuts with Crayons

The Captain noticed a change in the rocs that blazed through the sky, screeching as they swooped lightning-quick to destroy all in their path.

Each roc had grabbed hold of a giant coconut, to carry it we knew not where, and they had sacrificed their savage speed for their burden for now.

Blocks Ferocious roc, lose 2 crayons

Set Two

Splash in the Water

The calm surface of the lukewarm sea was disturbed until it became a roiling whirlpool that threatened to suck the entire ship down to Mike Nesmith's locker. From the middle of the maelstrom there arose a fearsome jellyfish, with a massive soft dome covering fierce spear-like bristles.

Adds Bristled Man-O-War

Draw a Big Storm Cloud on the Shower Wall

A heavy, black, and pendulous storm cloud appeared in the sky, seemingly drawing its power from the ship's ration of crayons. The crew feared that it was an ill omen, but the Captain told them to becalm themselves; he had seen such a cloud before and knew what it portended. The Gods were looking out for the safety of the crew, and the cloud was there to hurl thunderbolts at any beast that might try to reduce our numbers.

Blocks the Deadly Hydra, lose 3 crayons

Knock an Action Figure Overboard

A mighty wind sprang up, threatening to swamp the ship while the crew scurried to strike the sails before they were torn apart. First Mate Jenkins stood atop the rigging, heedless of the gale, giving orders to the crew, until the wind gusted anew and flung him into the sea. We scarce had time to mourn his loss, as the splash when he landed threw up a great wave of bubbles which washed aboard the ship. The crew frantically shoveled the bubbles belowdecks to add to that which was already there. Then "Padre" Anderson said a few words for Jenkins, and the Captain ordered an extra ration of grog for the crew.

Lose 1 crew, gain 20-23 bubbles

Submerge Some Bubbles

The Captain ordered the crew to release depth charges made from our precious foam supply. The crew respectfully questioned the captain's decision, but he explained the foam would slow the foul creatures of the deep that beset our cursed voyage.

Blocks the giant man-eating shark, lose 16 bubbles

Set Three

Turn on the Shower Wand

A fierce, stinging, relentless rain began to fall upon the crew, and they shielded their eyes and looked to the heavens. "Get down below, ye gobsmacked idiots!" the captain shouted, for the rain was not rain at all! It was the hungry drool of a dozen dozen serpent's heads, all springing forth from a single serpent's body: the Hydra.

Adds Deadly Hydra

Dump Bubble Bottle and Turn on the Faucet

The crew heard a distant burbling sound, as if the ocean itself had a bad case of indigestion. Suddenly, a huge waterspout appeared on the horizon, a deluge, a solid column of water descending from heaven itself. The ocean frothed beneath it, sending a fresh wave of foam crashing toward the ship.

Adds 13-19 bubbles

Put the Toy Boat on the Side of the Tub

The crew was flung out of their bunks in the dead of the night--the ship had run aground on a gleaming white island. The crew leapt onto the hard, cold beach and tried to push the vessel back in the water, but could not budge her. Then a group of savage natives, clad only in loincloths, approached us. Through signs, they told the Captain they would set the boat to sail again, and would even replenish our dwindling crayon supply, if we would leave one member of the crew behind to marry the Chief's daughter. Seaman Johnson was well taken with the girl's dark beauty, so agreed to stay behind, and with the native's help the ship was soon underway again.

Lose 1 crew, gain 4 crayon

Cover the Ship in Bubbles

Blocks the fearsome giant squid, lose 13-20 bubbles

Set Four

Pull the Drain Plug

The waters around the ship began to swirl, faster and faster, until the ship was circling the edge of a vast whirlpool. "We must lose some ballast or we're sharkbait for sure!" the Captain said, and the crew hurled the treasure overboard, foam and crayons alike. The ship listed crazily to starboard, and a few of the crew fell in and were instantly swallowed by the raging sea. Still the ship circled the rim of the spout, faster and faster.

Lose 8 crew, 3 crayons, 17 bubbles. Logs occurs every 4 adventures instead of 5.

Open a New Bathtub Crayon Box

With a thundering crash, great sticks of colored wax began to fall from the sky, splashing into the sea around us. One landed on the deck and the crew scattered, but the Captain strode up to inspect it. "They're crayons, me hearties!" the Captain shouted. "A storm must have blown them off of a freighter! Haul them in!" The crew went to work hauling and storing the crayons from heaven.

Gain 3 crayons

Sing a Bathtime Tune

The crew heard an eerie, irresistible voice singing a song in a language they could not understand. The Captain ordered all to stuff their ears with cotton, but even he could not resist the song, and soon found himself steering the vessel to an island made of foam. There, sunning themselves on the beach, were creatures half-woman and half-fish, beautiful but cruel. They sang on, urging us to throw ourselves into the water and swim to them. Crewmen Fredrickson and Alvarez flung themselves overboard and struck out for the island, and were never seen again. And perhaps the whole crew might have followed, had not a Cyclops appeared, jealous of his Siren harem. He hurled boulders of foam and waxy crayon planks at the ship until the crew feared the vessel would be swamped, but the Captain was able to steer away from that accursed place before more crew was lost.

Lose 2 crew, gain 3 crayons and 16 bubbles

Surround Bubbles with Crayons

The Captain ordered the crew to build a kind of raft out of our precious crayons, with a big empty space in the middle he filled with foam. The crew was mystified, and some wondered if the days and nights on the open sea had finally destroyed the old salt's mind.

But soon we saw what the Captain had wrought: he had built a bathysphere to descend into the deep and parlay with the Mer-Folk. He returned from the depths with a few greenish, fishy-smelling crew to join the ranks.

Lose 6-16 bubbles, lose 2 crayons, gain 5 crew
