Shields can be equipped in the hand you are not currently using for your weapon. They typically provide Damage Reduction. As with all off-hand items, you cannot equip a shield if you are wielding a 2-handed (or 3-handed) weapon. Some Turtle Tamer skills require you to wear a shield.
