A familiar is a creature that assists an adventurer in various ways, such as attacking enemies, helping earn more Meat or items, regaining HP or MP, or increasing your stat gains from battles.

To get a familiar, you must first have a Familiar-Gro™ Terrarium installed at your campground. Then "use" the hatchling form of the familiar to place it in your Terrarium. You may have one of each type of familiar, and you may have one familiar accompany you at a time.

When you first acquire a familiar, it is automatically assigned a default name. It is possible, in fact, encouraged, to rename your familiar - part of the fun of having familiars is giving them their own unique and whimsical names.

Once the hatchling is put into your Terrarium, it will stay with you forever, excepting the Reassembled Blackbird. You will not be able to trade, sell or otherwise get rid of the activated familiar. Furthermore you cannot use a hatchling of the same type a second time on the same account. Collecting as many familiars as possible is in fact a good thing. The number of collected familiars is mentioned in the other accomplishments section of your Quest Log and contributes to the Collector's Score.

Familiars gain their own experience when you defeat a monster. Normally a familiar obtains one experience point per kill, but some items may change that. As their experience increases, they gain weight, to a maximum of 20 pounds. Familiars may also gain experience at the Arena.

The following tools are invaluable to help you maximize weight gain at the arena. They are, in increasing order of automation:

The base weight (without Familiar Equipment or effects) of a familiar is equal to the square root of its experience (weight = experience1/2) with the minimum weight possible being 1 lb and the maximum being 20 lbs. In other words, a familiar gains a pound at 4, 9, 16, 25, 36, 49, 64, 81, 100, 121, 144, 169, 196, 225, 256, 289, 324, 361, and 400 experience.

You may increase the effective weight of your familiar in several ways: using some types of familiar equipment, equipping various tiny plastic accessories, gaining the effect of Empathy, or having the Turtle Tamer skill Amphibian Sympathy. A Pastamancer may also increase the weight of their own familiars by casting Leash of Linguini. For a comprehensive list of everything in the game that changes the weight of your familiar, see Familiar Weight.

A collection of familiar effect data, compiled by FFiXMaster, is available on Coldfront.

When you ascend, you are allowed to take one familiar with you. That familiar will retain both its experience and its kills. All other familiars will have their experience levels reset to 0, but retain their kills.
