A familiar is a creature that assists an adventurer in various ways, such as attacking enemies, helping earn more Meat or items, regaining HP or MP, or increasing your stat gains from battles.
To get a familiar, you must first have a Familiar-Gro™ Terrarium installed at your campground. Then "use" the hatchling form of the familiar to place it in your Terrarium. You may have one of each type of familiar, and you may have one familiar accompany you at a time.
When you first acquire a familiar, it is automatically assigned a default name. It is possible -- in fact, encouraged -- to rename your familiar. Part of the fun of having familiars is giving them their own unique and whimsical names. If your custom familiar name includes swear words, the name will be replaced by the text "[profanity]". A familiar's name cannot exceed 40 characters.
Once the hatchling is put into your Terrarium, it will stay with you forever, except during a Bad Moon ascension. You will not be able to trade, sell or otherwise get rid of the activated familiar. Furthermore you cannot use a hatchling of the same type a second time on the same account (other than in Bad Moon). Collecting as many familiars as possible is in fact a common goal. The number of collected familiars is mentioned in the other accomplishments section of your Quest Log and contributes to the Collector's Score.
Familiars gain their own experience when you defeat a monster. Normally a familiar obtains one experience point per kill, but there are several items and effects that can increase this (see Familiar Weight). As their experience increases, they gain weight, to a maximum of 20 pounds. Familiars may also gain experience at the Arena.
The following tool is invaluable to help you maximize weight gain at the arena: Familiar Arena Chart by Vladjimir
The base weight (without Familiar Equipment or effects) of a familiar is equal to the square root of its experience (weight = experience1/2) with the minimum weight possible being 1 lb and the maximum being 20 lbs. In other words, a familiar gains a pound at 4, 9, 16, 25, 36, 49, 64, 81, 100, 121, 144, 169, 196, 225, 256, 289, 324, 361, and 400 experience.
You may increase the effective weight of your familiar in several ways. Some of the most common are using familiar equipment, equipping various tiny plastic accessories, gaining the effect of Empathy, or having the Turtle Tamer skill Amphibian Sympathy. A Pastamancer (or a character with the necessary skill permanently learned) may also increase the weight of their own familiars by casting Leash of Linguini. For a comprehensive list of everything in the game that changes the weight of your familiar, see Familiar Weight.
For a list of what familiars do, including formulas and frequencies, please see Familiars by type.
Notes
Of George Carlin's "Seven Dirty Words", (and Lenny Bruce's nine) the ones that you still can't say on T.V. yield the "[profanity]" message. While the ones that are now allowed on T.V. are also accepted as names & shown. Other swear words that are allowed on T.V. (but not listed by Carlin or Bruce) are accepted as well.
Also, the first part of Carlin's "number 5" can be used by itself, most likely because only the slang definition is considered "dirty", whereas the proper definition simply means a male chicken.
